Incredible TV—TCL Broke It with a Software Update

I absolutely loved this TV for the first 6 months. The picture was stunning—deep blacks, vibrant highlights, and a level of contrast that made it feel like I was watching an OLED. I was genuinely impressed and often bragged about the value I got for the price. Then TCL pushed a software update, and everything changed—instantly. Now the TV is laggy, the eARC connection to my soundbar is either completely broken or delayed by several seconds, and the picture quality is washed out. I can no longer achieve the deep blacks and bright highlights that made this TV so special. The software feels sluggish, and even simple actions like adjusting volume result in delayed, queued responses that make the whole system feel broken. I’ve tried every setting combination I can think of, but nothing brings back the image quality I had before. It’s like a completely different (and much worse) TV now. This isn’t my first bad experience with TCL, but it might be my last. If you’re considering this model, be warned: TCL can and will push updates that fundamentally degrade your experience—and there’s no easy way to go back.

No-Brainer Pick, Especially If Cost Consideration

Read/watched many internet and YouTube reviews and focused on mini-LED TVs. I ruled out OLED due to the extensive hours of sports and news that I watch…did not want the worry of screen burn-in from scoreboard graphics or channel logos. Maybe it’s a very small issue….but not worth it in my OCD mind. Decision was between the Sony Bravia 7 and the TCL QM8 (2024). Had previously bought a 43” TCL Q6 for our home gym and the picture was notably better than our 2017 Samsung 65” KS8000 series family room TV that we now wanted to upgrade from. Took a step back from all the technical noise from all the “experts” and realized I NEVER thought about “blooming” or “black levels” when I watch TV….I watch the game/movie for what it is. So, picked up the 75” QM8 and saved $700 over the Bravia 7. This TCL works great…as does my 43” one….4k sports are bright and awesome (Dodgers won the Series, thanks to this TV!) Standard Def shows are fine. The sound is much better than our older Samsung and gets much louder, too. I’m not sure why a more expensive TV really matters after a certain point….maybe “bragging rights” or “latest-and-greatest” syndrome? The savings was big enough that if it lasts 5 years, we’ll just move on to the next TV…which will have even more technology.

After days of research and comparison, this TV rose to the top. We replaced a 4k 60" Samsung that still gave us a great picture but we wanted something bigger. The quality of the picture on the TCL is incredible, but the sound is even better. The onboard subwoofer coupled with the rest delivers! I no longer have to run my TV through the stereo when watching music videos. Dialogue is clear as a bell. The refresh rate makes football games even more enjoyable. Getting it all at a very reasonable price ]made this a no brainer.

Could not ask anything more from a TV than I enjoy from this TCL75QM851g. Picture is crystal clear and bright. This mini LED QLED has a comparable picture to an OLED without the concern of burn-in. Very easy to navigate the Google smart operating system. The 80 watts of sound is fantastic, obviating the need for a separate soundbar in most cases. the 75 inch panel looks great mounted on the wall of my 20 ft by 16 ft living room.

An amazing TV at 75”. It has all that you need and especially if you play video games the 120 FPS does help in certain games that allow 120. It also has very nice colors and the sound from the tv is really good if you didn’t have a soundbar connected.

    TCL Help! Software Update Needed!

Beautiful product. Excellent build quality, packaging, picture quality, sound, this TV will blow you away. The software is fast and easy to use, not slow compared to other major brands. The contrast is near OLED, the brightness is un matched, and reflection handling excellent! TCL you need to update the software to let you enable game mode whole using apps. GeForce Now is unplayable because I can’t enable game mode. Cloud gaming is the future, you already have amazing game settings, but let us enable them! Same with using Boosteroid, can’t enable game mode and lag makes it unplayable me. Please patch this! Great product overall, highly recommend.

I love this TV. In my other rooms, I have LG OLED TVs, LG C1. I wanted to try something different so I try it out the TCL QM8 75 inch. It’s a pretty good fit. I have it in my living room, which is bright at sometimes during the day. The picture is great better than what I expected it to be. I don’t play lots of video games, but the TV made me go by a PS 5 and I tried different settings to get a great picture on the video game as well and it worked out pretty good. What I really love about the TV. I can download a lot of streaming apps even a few sideload streaming apps. This TV is amazing to me. It picks up my voice real well with the Google Assistant. The sound from the TV is pretty good so I moved my sound bar I originally had to one of my bedroom I don’t use it for the TCL. TCL has stepped up their game with this TV. I’ve never had one before because listening to my friends say how cheap they are but this TV feels premium. It looks premium sitting on my TV stand.

Pictures is amazing, but I keep having to reset the tv every week as it seems like using the Google base system without Apple TV, which I'm currently using it, jams it up and I get less quality until I reset it. I bought this new in 2025, but it was a 2024 model, so not sure if more recent ones have fixed this, and I spoke to TCL support but was unable to resolve my issue with the first call. Get the Store- support warranty, I did not, and I'v wanted to throw this TV out the window in frustration, but I'm still trying to find the patients to eventually resolve. The price was right, but I am doubting the product support aspect of my purchase.

I've had this TV now for about a month and can't Recommend it enough for its value. The picture is unbelievable and the sound was the biggest surprise. I knew the TV was going to have a great picture from what I had read and reviews and observed in the store but once I got it home and began to tweak it to our settings I could not believe how realistic the picture actually is. The one word of advice I will give is ensure that the input that you are using is a 4K input and you are using the 4K inputOutlet for your picture the High definition 4K input makes all the difference in the quality of the picture and performance of the TV, but that goes for about any TV you get...the better input the better ouput. The biggest surprise is the sound I read that it had a upgraded sound system but wasn't anything I could test until I got it home. I truly thought about purchasing a soundbar but once I got the TV in, got the settings where I wanted there is no need for a soundbar with this TV if you have an average size room. If you have a larger room I'll leave that up toUp to you I have a 14 / 14 room and it's plenty of sound for us and very realistic. As I said, cannot recommend this TV enough and I will also say buy from Best Buy as this TV was one price when I bought it and it's come down and they have matched the price every time could not be any happier.

The QM8 is the go-to budget TV, especially when on sale. It’s typically priced at an average of $1,499, but I managed to snag one for $1,299 during the Black Friday sale. I previously owned the QM850G model, but it suffered water damage due to a malfunctioning sprinkler head. I was so satisfied with the previous model that it was hard to consider a different TV. This new model is an upgrade, offering increased brightness thanks to more dimming zones. However, you’ll need to calibrate the color profile first. I noticed there’s an excess of red in the default mode, which may require adjustment. The blacks are close to OLED quality, but don’t expect true OLED performance.

I thoroughly enjoy this TV over OLED, I went into the store and saw this vs the C4 OLED and in a bright room this completely destroys an OLED. If youre on the fence for gaming or movies just do it and you wont be disappointed, also invest in an apple tv it makes life so much easier.

Great TV. Went from watching a ten year old television, with limited streaming capability, to a new seventy five inch, fully loaded smart tv. The picture on the new tv is incredibly clear, and the functions are easily navigated with the remote control. I liked it enough that I bought a second TCL tv with a smaller screen for the bedroom. The sales staff at Best Buy were very helpful and knowledgeable about the different brands available. A no pressure sale for me.
