    Tex-ellent Cartoons on Blu Ray!

Tex Avery directed some of the best cartoons of the 1940s and 1950s. Although his earliest work at Warner Brothers shouldn't be overlooked (he helped develop Bugs Bunny), Avery's MGM stuff deservedly earns the name "Screwball Classics." This beautifully restored blu ray collection offers a variety of Avery madness, including his four Screwy Squirrel episodes, a number of Droopy toons, and some one-shot zanies. Arguably, his best creations were "The Girl" and "The Wolf," who first appeared in "Red Hot Riding Hood" (on this disc) and again in various forms, although the premise is the same. The Girl is a sexy singer/dancer in the Betty Grable mode. The Wolf reacts to the Girl's performance with insanely lascivious responses that get wackier with each gag and in each subsequent cartoon. These cartoons originally appeared in movie theaters for audiences of all ages, but the wolf's bulging eyes and tongue as long as a fire hose had a Freudian subtext that older viewers would understand. Some of the topical humor requires an understanding of World War II rationing and shortages, such as the Wolf offering the Girl, "diamonds, furs and a set of new whitewall tires." A disclaimer at the beginning of the cartoons warns that the un-PC gags of the time included racial and sexist stereotypes. Still, despite the dated aspects of some of Avery's cartoons, he was way ahead of his time and may have influenced the artists of the early MAD comics, underground cartoonists, and modern classics such as "Roger Rabbit." Who else but Avery would have the characters run so fast that they literally jumped out of the film's frame? Who else but Avery would start a cartoon and then have a character complain about the lack of opening credits? Who else but Avery would open a cartoon that resembles the cutest Walt Disney short, only to have the obnoxious, sniffling Screwy Squirrel beat up the adorable bunny (off camera) while taps lays in the background? This collection only scratches the surface of the Tex Avery experience. Hopefully, there will be future volumes with "The Cat That Hated People": "King Sized Canary"; "Rural Riding Hood"; and dozens of others. We can use the laughs today.

There's a saying amongst cartoon enthusiasts: "the worst Tex Avery cartoon is still better than any other." As a senior citizen I can safely say it was true then and it is even truer now. While many are not considered politically correct by today's standards it is fortunate for Tex Avery devotees, that Warner Bros. decided to release these cartoons uncut and painstakingly restored. Nearly 70 years ago the cartoons were usually better than the movies they accompanied. Walt Disney, Ib Iwerks and Chuck Jones were household names. But no name was better known than Tex Avery. For less than $20 you have an opportunity to watch some of the funniest cartoons ever made. Only caution I have, if you can be easily offended by a cartoon these are probably not for you.

Frederick Bean "Tex" Avery was known for producing and directing animated cartoons for the Warner Bros. and MGM studios. He was crucial in the creation and evolution of characters such as Droopy Dog, Screwy Squirrel, George and Junior, and Chilly Willy. He made cartoons that appealed equally to adults, who appreciated Avery's speed, sarcasm, and irony, and to kids, who liked the nonstop action. This first volume highlights some of his best work from the 40's and early 50's.

What a delight!! I watched this on a Saturday morning like we did as kids. It is wonderful to see the cartoons, that I watched as a child, as an adult. Like with Tex Avery's work with the Looney Tunes, there is so much that we understand as an adult that we did not as children. Avery is absolutely brilliant. These cartoon are dated in many ways, yet still such a pleasure to watch today. For animation lovers, this is a must have.

This collection of classic cartoons really takes be back to my childhood. It has been 25 years since I have seen many of these cartoons and they are just as good as they were back then. One of my all-time favorites on this set is “Symphony in Slang.” The A/V quality on this set is amazing and the cartoons are presented uncut. I eagerly anticipate further volumes in this series.

Whether you are familiar or not, Tex Avery's contributions to animation are immense. The restoration is incredible and the zany cartoons really hold up. Fair warning, and this is stated on the disc as well, this is a collection of cartoons from a time where certain gags would now be inappropriate culturally. A few instances but worth noting.

One of the funniest cartoonists ever. I have collected various Tex Avery cartoons in the past. Here we have a nice collection in blu-ray. This collection includes Droopy and Little Red Hot Riding Hood. The humor can be enjoyed by adults as well as kids.

It's great to have these classic Tex Avery cartoons preserved on Blu-ray. Kudos to Warner Bros. I grew up with this and it's very nostalgic for me to see again. I also picked up Volume 2 and am looking forward to seeing Warner Bros complete the series.

These old cartoons look pretty good (blu-ray) considering their age. Remember most of these from when I was a kid (decades ago) and, since I was using up Reward Zone Certificates that were approaching expiration, got them (this and VOL 2) at a great price.
