one of the most terrifying movies of all time

In 1979, the most terrifying haunted house movie came our way. The haunted house film was entitled, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. This film is based on the true events of the DeFeo murders, where Ronald Butch DeFeo, Jr. murdered his parents, two brothers, and two sisters, while the slept. This film is definitely the most horrifying haunted house story to have ever been told. "The Amityville Horror" has gone on to be one of the most freigtening and suspenceful horror films of all-time. Based on the true story of the Lutz family, the movie dramaitzes the paranormal events that happens to the Lutz's after purchasing a new home in which a mass murder had taken place. James Brolin, Canadian Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger star in one of the most successful independent films of the 1970's. Also starring in the film are Emmy winning soap opera actress Irene Daily (Liz from "Another World") who plays a nun, and sweet Natasha Ryan, who was featured as the young Sally Field character in "Sybil". This is just the ultimate horror film in every single way. The slow and quiet build-up to the unexplainable events that supposedly actually happened and tormented a family that just wanted to move somewhere nice is Still a story that sends shivers up my spine. Something that still makes me think and try to come up with a rational explanation to all those wild experiences. The original Amityville Horror will always hold a special place in my book as the first movie to ever give me nightmares, the first horror movie to ever make me shake and cry in total fear, and the first horror flick to ever change the way I think about life and death. If all these events really did occur and torment that poor family, then I think people should open their eyes to the possibility there might be something evil out there. I personally believe in God, and believe something happens when we die, I'm quite sure I believe something evil is out there. Assuming this movie is based on a completely true story, well, i would like to believe that did happen One thing I didn't know is that, it's wasn't necessarily the people who were murdered in the home that was causing the next family to go through a series of disturbing events- but something evil made the oldest son of the previous family go insane and murder his family. It was something that was living in the basement apparently, behind a brick wall where the families dog kept digging to the point where his paws were bleeding. On a final note, yes, it was Very disturbing how the family seemed to completely disregard that the previous family was murdered. If that was me who found out about that kind of information, I wouldn't have moved into that house for anything. This film is the scariest haunted house film I have ever seen in my entire life. I sat up one night to watch it and I was scared out of my wits. Now, as I said, this film is based on true events. The DeFeo murders did actually take place at 112 Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York. The hauntings that the Lutz's experienced were not at all to this extent, but I have heard that they did experience some pretty spooky stuff.. i recommend you see this movie it's worth it

    A Scary Haunted House Movie

Margot Kidder, James Brolin, and Rod Steiger star in this classic haunted house tale based on the best-selling book by Jay Anson. Brolin and Kidder star as George and Kathy Lutz, newlyweds who are looking to purchase a new home for their family. The house they choose was the scene of six grisly murders committed by Ronnie DeFeo a year earlier. Undaunted, the Lutz family moves in. Almost immediately, strange things begin happening. Father Delaney, played brilliantly by Rod Steiger, comes to bless the house, but he is soon set upon by a swarm of flies and told by an unseen voice to "get out". After fleeing the house, he becomes violently ill and is haunted by what occurred while he was there. Strange things are happening to the Lutzes as well. Kathy's brother has $1500 simply vanish from his coat pocket, her aunt suffers the same sickness as Father Delaney, and George is constantly cold. Father Delaney believes that there is an evil presence inside the house, but his fellow priests are not convinced. Still, he says a private mass for the Lutz family, but he cannot escape the presence even while in his own church; he loses his sight during the mass. Finally, after twenty eight days of horror and unexplained occurances, the Lutz family flees their home; never to return for their possessions. This is a classic haunted house tale. Brolin and Kidder are excellent as George and Kathy, but its Rod Steiger's memorable performance as the troubled Father Delaney that makes this movie so good. His portrayal of the compassionate yet unbelieved priest who only has the Lutzes best interests at heart is tremendous. The movie follows the events listed in the book very closely, and the movie itself is thrilling and scary. I highly recommend this fine movie. Watch and see how a unsuspecting family is forced to flee their home from an unseen yet very real supernatural presence

time capsule film of the 1970's

It's easy to see why this film was such a hit on its 1979 release. The book (supposedly based on true events) was at the top of the bestseller list and economic woes were as much on people's minds as they are now (2008). This enabled us to identify with George & Kathy Lutz (James Brolin & Margot Kidder) more than we otherwise would have. The house itself is nicely done. There are the famous 'eye-windows' and, unlike the horrible remake, the house is not the size of a mansion, so it's understandable why a family would want to move in it, even though the viewer knows why they shouldn't. There are some campy moments of overacting, but, despite that, this film has a nice, creepy feel to it.

Based on a true story that was claimed by writer Jay Anson, The Amityville Horror is about a large house on the coast of Long Island where newly weds George and Kathy Lutz and their three children move into the house that they hope will be their dream house but it ends up in terror. Despite full disclosure by the real estate agent of the home's history, George and Kathy buy the house. George says, "Houses don't have memories," but they turn to their family priest Father Delaney who believes the house is haunted and performs an exorcism on the house. But the evil spirit in the house causes him to become blind and makes him very ill. George and Kathy with the help of another priest Father Bolen and a police detective they face the fears of the house, but not knowing the spirit is planning to possess George and then the children...

    Good Movie, Poor Overall Product

Good movie. But 2 stars for the overall product, as the blu ray release that I have has NO bonus features. To keep it simple, see my pic for the bonus features included on the dvd release. Yes to recommend if you just want a bare blu ray movie. No to recommend if you like bonus features and you don't care to upgrade your quality.
