Michael Crichton's heart-stopping techno-thriller from 1969 is brought to realization by the great director Robert Wise (Sound of Music)!

Unseen Threat

Many problems beset the human race but when these problems are unseen and unknown, the existence of mankind is at risk. Other more recent films have explored the threat of an unknown virus but this 1970s film's virus was from outer space. Space exploration always posed a threat that a mission might bring back something dangerous to earth. Later in the film the virus is speculated, by the paranoia starting to grip the scientific experts, to be man made by the military for use in germ warfare, however, this conjecture is never proven. At near the end of the film a wrong turn is taken by the scientists to totally eliminate the virus (and themselves) by blowing up the test facility, which was a mistake that can only be corrected by one man. In the end planet earth and mankind is saved again. Robert Wise skillfully directed this early attempt to explore this subject. The technology is dated by today's standards, but since this film was made in the 1970s this is understandable. Give this film a chance, you will not be disappointed. This Blu-ray is a Best Buy exclusive, The Blu-ray AV quality is consistent with films of this time period.

Classic Sci-Fi Film And The Best Book To Film

The Andromeda Strain is simply a first rate film. It is the first film based on Michael Chritchon novel. And is directed by Ray Wise. The director of the 1956 science fiction masterpiece The Day The Earth Stood Still. The acting of the stars. The set designs of the underground complex. As well as the story are fully rich in depth. And the alien invader being a deadly microvirus that can kill in seconds is filmed seriously. The original Andromeda Strain is must watch viewing for Sci-Fi fans and Chritchon fans as well.

This movie is as relevant as the day it was made. Every President since Eisenhower has been warned that the single biggest threat to the American population is a virus we have no control over. Like Dr. Anthony Fauci warned, "It's not a matter of if, but when." God keep us safe. And let us have the intelligence to be prepared for the unknown. This movie never lets you rest. It's as realistic as it can be. You can't improve on this classic.

A Cautionary Tale That is Still Relevant

Many virus outbreak stories must owe some debt to Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain. The story about a virus outbreak in a small town (but with two survivors, a baby and an old man) is just as relevant today as it was back then in the early 70s. The style, directed by Robert Wise, was groundbreaking at the time but so was the book.
The A/V quality is fine for its first time on Blu-ray, but seeing as this movie is old, don't expect demo quality. But for what it is, it looks and sounds great on Blu-ray. It won't be sold wide until May 5, so Best Buy is the only place to get it right now.
The extras are fine. A featurette on the making of the movie, a "portrait" of author (and director of several movies) Michael Crichton and the movie's trailer.

Slow but not a strain on believability

I'm trying to watch all the movies based on Michael Crichton books. So many are great (Jurassic Park, West World), and I had high hopes for this one too, but it just felt so slow for me now to watch, though yes, the plausibility and reality factors for this "alien invasion" movie are totally believable - and it did lead me to some interesting philosophical thoughts. I do appreciate the improved image quality of the Blu Ray disc (vs. DVD). Rated G but there is some brief nudity. My noted bias is that I usually enjoy all types of sci-fi movies.

This is a classic film of the 70's. It uses some techniques that were popular for films of the time period (I'm glad they no longer use some of them, but if you have to see them, at least it is in a good film). The story is compelling, but be ready for a cerebral adventure -- this is not a modern action adventure. I highly recommend this as one of the few really good commercial films coming out of the 1970's.

This is one of the best of the best of sci-fi movies. Even the implications that this kind of event could possibly happen in real life is chilling. The possible end of man kind doesn't necessarily have to be highly advanced aliens set on a quest to conquer but instead what is portrayed in this movie. As a sci-fi fan I highly recommend watching this classic.

Stories about humankind learning they can't control everything never get old. Here we have a 1970's sci-fi classic about a manmade satellite bringing a deadly alien organism back to earth. People are dropping like flies, and a group of elite scientists in a at a top-secret facility work feverishly to neutralize the threat. This is an early effort by writer Michael Crichton (Coma, Westworld, Jurassic Park), and it's still well worth a look.

The Andromeda Strain is a classic sci-fi virus film adapted from the classic novel by Michael Crichton. It is a great, intelligent, and somewhat suspenseful film and a great watch now especially with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

This was directed by Robert Wise. Michael Crichton had an early part in this film (27 years old) and was 6 feet 9 inches tall! The film was released in 1971 but it was delayed for 2 years. A group of scientists investigates a deadly new alien virus before it can spread. The old man was drinking Sterno for his ulcer and the baby from his rapid breathing and crying which put it on either side of the pH range.

I love Michael Crichton’s written work! This movie was confusing at first because of the sound effects and overall sound design but it definitely tells a story about what humankind did back in the 1960s with regards to experimentation of biological warfare and what humankind continues to do now.

I've seen this movie probably 5 or 6 times over the years and every time it never fails to disappoint with its suspense. As dated as it seems to be, it still holds up as "smart" and edge of your seat entertainment!

One of the best of it's kind. Really scary & keeps you thinking throughout.
Low budget & few special effects but it's the story that works to keep you interested.

I saw this movie when it first came out about 1971. I thought the effects were quite good for the time and they have held up. This is not an action movie so some may not like the pace. It goes back and forth to senate meetings concerning the program to the program activity. I thought the acting was well done also.

It was great to see one of my favorite science fiction films get a Blu-ray release. The picture and sound quality is very good (probably from an older transfer) and it didn't drop any of the special features from the last DVD release.

This is a really good movie, and you better scoop up the Blu Ray before it goes out of print, because rumor has it that they aren't making any more of these. Once the current stock sells out, its gone! Collectors, buy now!
