The Beatles were very prolific in 1968, and wrote many songs during their pilgrimage to India. The White Album (officially titled "The Beatles") contains an almost overwhelming amount of music. Individual songs launched new sub-genres of pop (Helter Skelter for heavy metal, Mother Nature's Son for John Denver-style folk). It's not a perfect collection. Revolution #9 is the worst waste of time in the whole Beatles catalog. But it does succeed in capturing the band members' struggles to project each of their personalities and tastes.

The White Album was one of the first double albums to ever be released (Dylan's Blonde on Blonde being the first). The Beatles reach their highest highs and their lowest lows on this sprawling effort. However, The White Album will still go down in rock history as one of the greatest albums ever made.
