This was an amazing movie, Nate Parker did a wonderful job in his portrayal of Nat Turner. I can only imagine what "the real slaves"endured at the hands of their white masters. Every person should watch this movie and see the horrows of slavery. If you don't feel a sense of sympathy for the slaves you have no heart or soul. This is a wonderful powerful movie. Very nicely done. Tells the history that has been hidden about Nat Turner and his revolt. The quality of the movie is very high and the performances are powerful. You can feel the the pain of the African people as they were suffering at the hands of the dominant society and how that pain allowed them to rise up to defend themselves. This is the anti-slave movie and its a shame the media sought to bury this movie.

If you have problems with the Nat Turner story then you're not going to like this one. That's a different debate on its own, but this movie does great justice to that famous rebellion. The acting is on point here, and the story puts you in a bit of a false place of security before reminding you of how horrid things were for slaves, and it really makes it sweeter when they get their revenge. This is why this one is easier to watch on repeat viewings than something like 12 Years a Slave. That movie was great too, but at least here there is some kind of comeuppance for the characters that you hate.

Needed telling of an Important Story

This is a very good movie, though bracing difficult to watch, most of the time. Its portrayal of the subtle undertones of slavery's oppression in daily life creeps up on the viewer until at some point of aggregation one is suddenly aware of the terrible weight borne by slaves, but also by the slavers; who live with an ever-present fear that some great slave revolt will eventually flare, and this fear prevents any true acknowledgment of shared humanity between the races. This story is an important signpost for contemporary Americans of all backgrounds who fit and question the state of Law and Race Relations today....

A Great Story About A Liberator for Freedom

This is a movie about the life of a slave named Nat Turner. He's born and raised a slave that was gifted to read. He was only taught the Bible and was restricted to read certain sections of the Bible by his oppressors. After realizing the Bible contradicts their bondage and through other tribulations, Nat Turner leads a slave revolt that lasted for only a few days. Once the short-lived rebellion ended, he was captured and sentenced to hang. The Nat Turner Slave Revolt, not mentioned enough in American history, was one of many rebellions that started the battle to end slavery.

I'm very into historical films, and I'm thankful that stories that need telling are being told. I was warned that this film was very violent and bloody. I didn't find it that way. While it wasn't pleasant to watch suffering people and what they went through, it was well done. It shows how war is awful, bloody and violent, not gratuitous. I enjoyed this film. It also illustrates the deficiencies we have as a nation, and how much work there is still to be done. (based on the bonus content on the DVD)

This one corrects the atrocities evident in the 1915 film by this same title ... one watched & approved by then-President Woodrow Wilson (much to his later discredit). I had hoped for many well-deserved OSCAR nominations for this one ... but it was not to be ... for other reasons which do not detract from the significance of this fine film ... which should be watched along with the NEXFLIX original "13th." Both are requirements for the courses I teach in American Government and Criminal Justice.

Say what you will about the actor director's personal life, but this movie right here is outstanding. Top-notch performances from everyone involved was sensational - it begs the question, "What side of history will we be on today?" That answer is yours depending on where one sits, and that's just okay. I am just glad a story with this weight has been told and was not afraid to show the honest truths of what happened in the slave trade years of our young country. Exceptionally done.

Greatness brought down by the past

I will omit any statements on the allegations against star, director Nate Parker and will just say this is a very well done film. The acting is on par with great films of the past. The sad times that are represented in this film need to have the spotlight shown upon them. Also I'd like to mention that most Blu Rays come with a slip cover, but every once in awhile you get a slip cover that contains a flip open case with additional artwork on it. In the past such cases graced every season of Vikings and most recently on The Revenant. Don't pay attention to the allegations, this is a well done film and should be honored for that alone.

    THE PAINFUL TRUTH!

This film was a long time coming as it deals with a very painful subject, particularly for African-Americans. The memory of Nat Turner tried to be erased by his killers by obliterating his dead body. They didn't want the real truth to be known. But thank God there are those who dared to write, produce and release the real deal on film so even a terrible part of America's true history would be known!

Hands down my favorite movie of 2016 Birth of a Nation delivers with a bang. In a time when the nation is at odds this movie proves that a people can only take so much before it's time to "REBEL". Nate Parker gives a fantastic performance in his portrayal of Nate Turner. I definitely recommend to everyone this is part of american history based on a true story and a real life hero.

Anytime we see a movie about the horrors of slavery we have to have a mindset that allows us to see this terrible treatment of our fellow humans. But this is absolutely necessary as it is the only way to understand the Turner revolt and the events that lead up to it. The movie takes us to this place, yes it is hard to see but it presents what it has to so that we understand.

Birth of A Nation 2016:Horrors of 19th century Sla

The movie Birth of A Nation:2016 (not to be confused with D,W.. Giffith's 1915 famous ---some would say infamous silent film "Birth of A Nation") is Nate Parker's view of an actual historical event in American history---slave Nat Turner's 1831 slave rebellion. Nate Parker wrote the screenplay, directed, and stars in the movie as Nat Turner. I do recommend this move but I would more highly recommend the 2013 award winning movie Twelve Years A Slave (also based on an actual event in pre-Civil War America).

We commend Nate Parker and his team members for the outstanding work they completed to tell Nat Turner's life story. My wife and I went to the show twice to see this masterpiece. This is a part of history that needs more exposure. We look forward to seeing more of their projects in the near future. We thank you all for such great work. T-N-T Embry Detroit Mich.

The motion picture told the story of Nat Turner from his perspective. He was a slave who became a pastor and role model to others in bondage. Eventually inhuman treatment by the slave masters lead to a revolt that lead to the death of his oppressors. The revolt lasted about 48 hours but marked the beginning of the movement to abolish slavery in the US.

I had never heard of this revolt, and history shouldn't be sanitized or edited. This move was powerful and some people may have a hard time with the story , but it is an important part of the US history and shouldn't be ignored. Well acted film and the DVD has extras that show the actual places where the revolt took place, along with interviews with descendants from both sides etc.Everyone should see this movie and discuss it. A good movie for history classes to show the students.
