I had owned "Closer," which was released prior to this "Essential" hits collection. The "Essential" is more definitive, though it does not completely overlap that of "Closer." For example, with "Ice Cream" and "Hold On," the "Essential" contains the versions from "The Freedom Sessions" instead of the versions from "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy," which are in "Closer."
However, what sets apart "Essential" from "Closer" is its inclusion of several tracks that were previously found in soundtracks or albums from other artists, and it is nice to see them all in one compilation. Tracks such as "Silence," "When She Loved Me," "Blackbird," just to name a few, are very welcome here, as well as a couple of tracks from "Closer" itself.
If you are looking for a hits package from Sarah McLachlan, this is the one to purchase.
