IN MY OWN WORDS:
If you are familiar with and enjoy such games as Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Dead Space then "The Evil Within" is right up your alley. Be warned this game will scare you and is not intended for children. It is extremely violent and gory which should be no surprise considering it is a horror survival game. You will be pushed to the edge as you become out numbered and cornered, forcing you to flee. Some sections can become quite challenging, giving you a real sense of accomplishment when you do finally get past. As your reality becomes distorted you will have a hard time predicting what's going to happen next! Puzzles will slow your progression and moments of intense pressure will have your blood boiling as you panic for a solution or perish trying. Creepy scary, pulse pounding fun!

The game was directed by “Resident Evil” franchise director Shinji Mikami.
The game intentionally attempts to make players feel claustrophobic and powerless by taking place in small spaces, limiting weaponry and forcing opponents to face nearly invincible enemies. It will keep you on the edge of your seat!

This game is very underated in my opinion, people just give it bad reviews, because it is a challenging game that doesn't hold your hand. While challenging, it is not impossible. The controls take awhile to get used to, and the camera can be kinda wonky, but otherwise the game is really fun and tells a very creepy story. The only bad thing about the story is that it ends abruptly and leaves a bunch of questions unanswered (I think it is because they are planning to release DLC later this year)

If you're into horror-survival games, this is definitely one to add to your collection. This games is especially well-designed for casual gamers who want to take in the story and appreciate the game. The controls on the XBOX One are a little 'complicated' to get adjusted to in the beginning, but you learn quick.

This game brings back the long-lost survival horror roots that were established by the first few resident evil games back in the late 90s. There's grit, blood, spine tingling sweat inducing terror around most turns in this game. It takes patience, careful planning, and a steady hand if you want any shot of beating even the first few levels. Definitely worth the buy, instant classic if you're a horror fan.

I really hadn't paid much attention to this game until about a week before it came out. I just ignored it as another one of those games trying to cash in on the zombie fetish that is going around in pop culture these days. Also, I've been severely disappointed in survival horror, and the turns that RE series has taken.
Once I watched the last trailer released before launch, I watched all the trailers going back to E3. The more I watched, the more I thought "Man, this game looks totally like the original RE, but with updated graphics...." - once I dug a bit further, I discovered that the CEO of the company and director of the game was none other than Shinji Mikami, the creator of original RE. It was then that I knew I must have this game.
I have since not been disappointed. The graphics are amazing, and while the camera is a bit iffy at points and the game isn't without a few short-coming, overall the game is amazing.
Pros:
Scary. As. Heck.
Well thought out story. It will keep you guessing right up to the end.
Controls well on both Xbox and PC.
Cons:
Story is very on-rails. While exploring is encouraged, it is also one of those "once you pass certain checkpoints, there's no going back" situations. One of my favorite things about Resident Evil was going back to previous areas and looking for missed items and items that were previously inaccessible.
Camera can be wonky. More than once I have died because I stomped an already dead bad guy instead of punching the dude in front of me.
A little short. A speed run can be done in less than 5 hours, and even an extended playthrough won't take more than 25 on the absolute outside edge.

The Evil Within was a fairly good survival horror game with a few scares here and there. Based off the trailers and commercials for this game, I was expecting scares and jumps throughout the game, but unfortunately they were few and far between. The story is ok and has it's twists, but after I played through the game twice it made a bit more sense. The game was fairly challenging on survival mode (normal) for my first playthrough, and ammo and health is scarce (just like I expect from a survival horror game). The graphics and sound are good, but there were two things that bothered me: 1) The aspect ratio of the game is locked in and you will have black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. I have a 60 inch TV and the black bars scale the visibility of the screen down to the size of a 42 inch screen. I couldn't imagine playing this game on any TV smaller than 60 inch. 2) Make sure you turn film grain setting to ZERO. Within the options menu, there is a setting for film/screen grain and it is defaulted to 100. I played the game like this for the first few levels and thought the graphics looked horrible and too dark. The graphics reminded me of Playstation 2 and I was very disappointed. However, once I changed the setting to zero it was like a night and day difference. The graphics drastically improved after I did this so I highly recommend you do the same when you play. Overall, the game was enjoyable and I was glad to play a survival horror game after many years. I would recommend this game if you are a fan of the genre.

I have been an avid fan of survival horror games since RE1 and I'm a fan of the Dead Space franchise too. When I played RE5 I got very angry when I saw zombies wielding AK47s. The melee weapons and chainsaws are fair game... but projectile weapons, REALLY? I know the whole concept of the living dead is supernatural and has no basis on reality, but come on. What makes something scary this day and age is the plausibility of the supernatural phenomenon. The idea that something that wild and scary can actually happen. When the dead have the ability to coordinate various parts of they're body, logically deduce reloading and aiming, to wield a rifle with deadly accuracy, it leaps over from "might be possible" and lands squarely on stupidly, ridiculous. Then when I heard that The Evil Within was going back to the basics I rejoiced and said "finally they have seen reason". NOPE!
To top it off, the reason this game is so difficult is not because of personal skill. It is because they have designed certain features into the way you control the character that seem designed to make you fail. Whether it be how the character moves (or doesn't!) or how quickly the character responds to a command or the length of time it takes the character to do any multitude of tasks. It is as if the character is in conspiracy with the enemies!
Now that we got that out of the way. BUY THIS GAME if your into horror games. If you can deal with the two biggest problems IMO, then you will love this game. It is just fun to kill these beasts and find different ways around any situation.
Oh yeah and the story is unintelligible and fractured and honestly don't expect to come out of this with any aha! moments in reference to the story and plot. Pretend that's its just mission after badass mission, that way you won't end up hating the writers like I do. Seriously guys, did they really pay you to write this script? Seriously?
If it weren't for the gunz a' blazin' zombies this would be a 5 star game for me.
Enjoy!

The Evil Within really doesn't waste any time. After a brief cutscene that sets up a psych-ward murder scene, detective Sebastian Castellanos is immediately thrust into a precarious situation involving a chainsaw madman and giant pools of blood.
It's definitely one of the best intros I've seen in some time, and the entire premise of "What is or isn't in your head, and what is reality?" is very easy to get on board with; it also facilitates some great pacing and setpiece changes. Don't expect much in the way of exposition or character development, as Evil falls in line with some of Mikami's cheesier work. You're going to see a lot of that permeating throughout the game, and into the core mechanics.
Although the game is billed as survival horror, it really feels more like the former than the latter. Ammo is scarce, your character is absolute worthless at doing just about everything from punching to sprinting (seriously, sprinting is terrible in Evil Within, partially by design and partially by the fault of the mechanics), stealth is generally preferred, and enemies can slice you to bits rather easily. To deal with this, you'll use a hybrid stealth and action scheme, which is modeled most notably after one of Mikami's finest works -- Resident Evil 4.
For the most part, both mechanics blend rather well. There are a number of situations that function like challenge rooms from the Arkham series, allowing you to approach them with a combination of different strategies. Once you get the agony crossbow, a harpoon gun of sorts, it opens up your options with a variety of elemental blasts, from freezing properties to stun-locking lightning traps. Stealth kills will become your best friend, as ammo conservation actually matters for once.
In terms of its tone, The Evil Within isn't so much scary as it is gory and exciting. Rather than rely on real psychological tension, Mikami and company basically throw a lot of hanging guts, blood, chase scenes, and decapitations your way. This works for the most part especially given the conceit of the aforementioned imaginative realms, but only a few enemies give off a vibe of something you haven't seen before. In a sense, it's a loose collective of old-school action survival horror tropes, which has its own set of merits and flaws.
Speaking of old school, The Evil Within looks like it came from the last generation of gaming. Although the giant black bars plastered across the screen are allegedly a design choice, it's clear from the art style down to the animations that the game looks dated. If you can get past that fact as I did, you'll find a plethora of rich environments that have the signature of a seasoned developer. Going along with the dated look, Evil Within has a few obtuse mechanics as well.
There is little to no explanation for anything, and near the beginning of the roughly 15-hour adventure, the developers kind of leave you to fend for yourself. For example, there's a part in the game where, if you explore every nook and cranny, you may not have a checkpoint for over 15 minutes. After carefully making your way to the end of a path, there's a crank you can interact with to open a door -- and as soon as you touch it, two enemies rise up from the ground at a point in the game where you barely have any defenses. You can "burn" bodies to kill latent corpses outright, but even though I saw them first and tried to burn them, I couldn't.
This is a stark contrast to the Souls series, where practically every mistake is your own fault. In Evil Within some areas just feel unfair, and the save system won't do you any favors -- especially if you get stuck in an area with low health and very little in the way of actual defenses. While I definitely welcome added difficulty in games, there were a few instances where I took a short break in frustration. It wasn't enough to deter me however, and I pressed on from one exciting moment to the next despite the occasional hangup.
On the topic of the somewhat clunky controls, I don't mind the legacy mentality, even in today's climate. (To be clear, The Evil Within doesn't have strict, tank-like movement.) Although there are plenty of titles that have updated systems and still maintain tension, I think there's a certain charm to be found in that older feel, and if a few other design choices were spruced up around it, the controls wouldn't be a problem on their own.
But while I did have fun with the majority of the game despite its flaws, it's important to note the problems with the PC build of the game. To be frank, the PC version is going to need a lot of work. Although you can use console commands to make it run at 60 frames per second, it's not consistently operating at that level, and there are some performance issues abound if you go that route.
I also had a few issues with the "developer splash screen" intro crashing on me (until I disabled it by adding +com_skipIntroVideo 1 to Steam's boot options), and your resolution options are limited without using the console. Even then, some resolutions are not fully supported, as information can be concealed off-screen. It's clear this was a quick console-port job, right down to the mouse lag in the menus. Having said that, the game is very much playable, and once it was running I had zero crashes in-game. Just don't expect it to be up to par with the majority of PC releases theses days.
If you like old-school third-person action games with horror elements, I'd recommend picking up The Evil Within on a console, possibly at a price cut. It will definitely scratch the itch of someone who has been pining for a return to the older days of gaming, but everyone else who has come to expect that certain layer of polish likely won't be amused.

If you are into horror games this a great game for you. Game play is similar to Resident Evil games and I also believe the game designer also designed Resident Evil. The game difficulty is decent even on normal and you can of course make it harder. The game length is pretty good as well. There is around 13 chapters. Ammo is scarce in the game. You have to be creative in the way you kill the enemies. So if you are a shoot em up type of gamer this might not be for you. At times you just have to run or hide from enemies. There is still plenty of times you have to use guns as well. There is also a pretty sweet crossbow with different types of arrow tips. So don't get me wrong, you do shoot things. You power up your abilities and weapons by collecting jars of points. Overall a great and scary game to play with all the lights turned off.

The Evil Within is a great game. It is a cross between old Resident Evil games and Silent Hill. The game is beautiful and ravished with great atmosphere. It takes time and is unforgiving but very rewarding. The story isn't tip-too but it's good enough and the end ranking system is identical to RE. Highly recommended if you like a challenge and some scares. Play it with the lights down and volume up

You will die many many times, but that is part of the fun! Figuring out how to conquer a level or boss is one of the cool parts of the game. This game has the twisted feeling of most Silent Hill games with a constant paranoia of whether you'll find the next cache of ammo or health before the next enemy.
