So, I watched the first two volumes of the series, and was really excited to see the final movie in the series. I open the movie, pop in the dvd and it's part two on disc 2...Woops! I go back to the case to put in disc 1 and, uh oh, only another part two on disc 2! Best buy sent me a movie with two disc 2s!!! Now, had I seen these before, it wouldn't have been such a "devastating" thing, but I hadn't and I don't know what happened with Smaug and the islanders, and oh!!!!! I called Best Buy, and they got a new version sent out post haste. In the end, it was a great ending.

First of all, the Hobbit is stars below Lord of the Rings (which was a masterpiece). That said, "Battle of Five Armies" is probably the best of the Hobbit trilogy. At least, everything that has been set up pays off one way or another. I wish Jackson had picked either a light-hearted children's tale (which the book was) or an epic (which LOTR was), instead of trying to do both. All of the extra non-book subplots shoved in by the studio didn't help either. Instead of a longer director's cut, I'd prefer to see a shorter version that compresses the Hobbit into one or two movies, not three.

Movie is great unless you love the book.

The cinematography and fights are entertaining, but as a fan of the book I'm disappointed in Peter Jackson's rendition. Several key points in the book are left out and several pointless additions are made the ruin the story. That being said, I can watch the movies and have a good time as long as I tell myself beforehand that I'm not watching the same story as I read and imagined as a child, teenager, and adult as I have read the book again and again. The action is great and the storyline compelling--just don't expect it to be the same. If you can accept that or don't care, buy away!

I love the Hobbit movies and I love seeing the extras on how they filmed it. When I saw this extended edition on sale for 19.99, I jumped on it! You get extra HOURS that take you through the filming experience. It's also fun to see the actors/actresses without their makeup and costumes. The locations they go to are beautiful and breathtaking. It was definitely worth buying.

    Best DVD edition

This is the most comprehensive edition available in DVD format and a perfect match for the first two DVD extended editions of the trilogy in my collection. Owning the DVD versions provides additional compatibility on various equipment platforms. With the proper reproduction equipment, as my Oppo/Samsung/Yamaha/Kef system provide, quality is nearly as good as the Blu-ray format.

Includes 3D, Blu-Ray, DVD, and UV digital. The 3D is pretty good and worth the extra money. The graphics are crisp and stunning throughout this film. Also, the sound is spot on for any audiophiles out there. It's hard to justify the purchase of DVDs with all the streaming available. But, if you have a 3D TV you should get this for your collection since 3D streaming is hard to come by.

    Mostly what was expected

I rather liked this movie, and the trilogy. However, it just lacked that special kind of drive that made you jump with surprise and let out a good "Oh Yeah!" Like the all the other movies did. It became too predictable, you knew what was going to happen. Except for the final battle. It just didn't have the same intense action like all the other epic battles in the series, and in the end too many of the main characters throughout the trilogy freaking died and Bilbo went home. It just kind of fell flat on that, you expect more, a lot more, and it just isn't there. 3D was still awesome.

I loved this movie, especially seeing it in 3D! I don't remember most of the action being in the book, but it still makes a good story, and is fabulous in High Def and 3D. I now have all three of the Hobbit movies and the triligy of "The Lord of the Rings." One day I will sit down and watch all of them back-to-back. I just wish the three Lord of the Rings movies were out in 3D, too.

The movie is a great ending to the Hobbit series. It wraps back into the Lord of the Rings trilogy very well and sets the stage for the start of the other movies. The only annoyance is that there are some characters in this movie that do not appear in the original movies, but since this was an afterthought I suppose that was inevitable. Still wonderful cinematography and well acted.

I liked it, I love the whole Lord of The Rings Series and The Hobbit. They changed the ending as all producers do when turning a book into a movie. I liked the previous Hobbit movies a little better. I was looking forward to see if they would go into detail how Sauramon went to the dark side and they didn't, even though it's not in the Hobbit books. Overall I liked the movie.

This is a first rate movie, quite well done. The steel box set includes an additional disk of extra's I've not had time to watch other than one movie actor extras which was quite entertaining. I wish Peter Jackson had been a bit more true to the book, but if you forgive him that, he did a great job of story telling and movie making. Lots of action in what seemed a short time.

The Hobbit trilogy catches a lot of flack in comparison to the near perfection that is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (especially the extended versions). While the Hobbit would have been better served by keeping things a bit more lean, overall they were still great and enjoyable films. This Blu-ray does not disappoint.

Loved all six of these movies, yes, including the Lord of the Rings series. This one is just a great end to an awesome series and I will be sad for a long time that there will be no more. Great filming, stunning and beautiful country shots of New Zealand and just in awe of the whole thing. This is definitely worth owning, and the 3D just adds more amazement to it all...

First off, the movie is fantastic. If you are a fan of the series then this is a must buy to complete the hobbit trilogy. Visually stunning and epic. I don't normally buy movie steelbooks but this one is absolutely gorgeous! There are several variant covers for this movie but none come even close to this. This will be a great display piece on my movie shelf for a long time!!

I purchased the 3D version of this movie and I love it. Peter Jackson has really taken advantage of the latest 3D technology. The depth and spacing is terrific. I own a 42" LG 3D TV with passive glasses and the quality is theater-like. I own all 3 Hobbit movies on 3D and am most pleased with them.

My one big issue with the theatrical release was that the ending was too short, it left too many questions unanswered. I am happy to report that the Extended Edition covers almost all of them. There are a number of extended scenes and they are all welcomed. It is a lot bloodier than any of the other Middle Earth movies so the R rating is justified. Very good movie!

The continuing saga comes full circle. The evil does not win and the good of the land survives. Some of the main characters through out the series pass, but in the end the Hobbit gets to go back home to live out his simple life compared to the adventure he has gone through. The 3D effect really makes the movie more encompassing which is really enhanced by the effect.

While the movie greatly deterred from the book (as did the others), it was great in its own right. It had the most action of the whole trilogy, as well as the most emotion/drama, and suspense. Overall, this was the best movie of the trilogy, and I recommend everyone watch it at least one time.

Not the Best in the series

This movie was in my opinion not as good as the first two Hobbit films and certainly could have done more to tie up some loose ends. It certainly did not do as good of a job of finishing off the Hobbit trilogy as Return of the King did of finishing the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It of course had some unnecessary storylines and then did nothing to actually resolve them.

This movie is the final movie in a trilogy prequel to the Lord Of the Rings. I'm sorry to see it end. Peter Jackson has done a remarkable job in the entire series (Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit). The New Zealand scenery is spectacular. Most of us will never get to visit New Zealand but we can get a sense of its scenic majestry in Peter Jackson's epic movies.
