As a kid I saw the Disney animated original. This live version does the animated predecessor justice and actually out dose it. From beginning to the climactic ending I was completely captivated. Story, incredible voice acting & acting and great action scenes were all wonderfully done and remained very faithful to the animated version. Disney. I was really impressed by the CGI animated animals throughout the movie. Incredibly animated and looked extremely real!! Great movie for the entire family Well. Well done disney.

There are so many reviews on here whining about how this version is not like the book, boo-hoo-hoo get over it. Not every thing has to be "just like the book". This is well done in "it's own" right with great voice overs that capture the essence of the animals. Great from beginning to end. Bravo! Highly recommended to all walks of life.

    The BEAR necessities of life....

We were living abroad and my son was about 2 years old when we got a hold of a copy of the original Disney Jungle Book cartoon movie. We probably saw it (along with The Land Before Time and the original Adam West Batman movie) about a gazillion times over the course of a year. His choice, not ours. We almost had the three movies memorized line by line when, thankfully, we got a Winnie-the-Pooh movie to break up the flow. When this update to Jungle Book came out I was moderately interested. After I read a few reviews on Best Buy's site I thought it might be worth a look and we bought the Blu-Ray edition. My wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly and when my son came to visit two weeks later, we watched again with him. (How's that for payback?) I personally think that computerized effects are often over-used and now near-boring, but this time around, the makers really hit the mark. For those who don't know, the movie was almost entirely computer-generated and very life-like. Snotty, opinionated, know-it-all Hollywood actors better be fearing for their jobs because now it appears that they can be replaced AND not missed. It was nice that a few of the songs from the original managed to find their way into this movie. A fun lil bonus was the way the movie handled the credits at the end. If you are into watching the extras, don't miss the footage of Christopher Walken doing his voice-over for his character. He was made for the part and vice versa. We watched the blu-ray on a 4k Sony TV so the picture was upscaled and stunning. Definitely worth watching again, and again... and maybe again. History DOES repeat itself.

A classical animated movie comes to life

    |

The animated jungle book was my very first movie I watched as a kid at the movies. This was the birth of a life long movie nerd and the magic of the animated classic never faded. I still love to watch it. Now the real life version. I have to admit I was very skeptical in the beginning, but after I watched the first previews I wanted to see the movie and what can I say? It blew me away. I liked the animal, Mowgli, the whole setting etc, etc. The story differs a little bit from the animated version, but I've read it's closer to the original book from Rudyard Kipling. But anyway, I was 5 again, the magic of a Disney movie caught me after a couple of minutes. All involved actors doing a great job. I'd highly recommend this movie. I'd give 6 stars if I could

While this is a reimaging (almost entirely), it is done in true Disney fashion. May be a bit intense for youngsters, but this movie is very respectful to the original animated feature. Phenomenal acting by Mowgli and the CGI cast.

    A Visual Feast

What's the point? That's the question director Jon Favreau and the brass at Disney had to answer if they were going to justify the money and man hours required to bring the visually stunning "live action" version of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book to the big screen some fifty years after the Disney animated version taught generations upon generations of children the bare necessities of life. What would be the point of retelling this story to the current generation in an updated form? What more could they bring to it that children might not elicit from that 1967 original? In short, would there be more of a point to it than simply showing off the technical wizardry of Weta Digital and their visual effects work? The funny thing is, we more than likely remember the 1967 version through nostalgia-filled eyes that cloud our judgment of the actual film. In going back and watching that film-the one I very much enjoyed as a child despite being born in the late eighties-it quickly became apparent there wasn't much substance to the story and that the film was more a collection of little scenes filled with different, but interesting animal personalities that featured catchy songs written by the Sherman brothers and very little more until Shere Khan showed up at the end to create some type of tension. And so, going into this latest version of Kipling's story that would pull from both that source material while being heavily inspired by the '67 film the biggest improvement they could make would be in the story department by crafting a narrative that held a driving force with serious forward momentum and a throughline plot that, at the very least, would add a little more significance and reason to seeing the film in the first place. With screenwriter Justin Marks (whose only prior feature credits include a Street Fighter film and a TV movie) though, we are brought the one thing I couldn't even have imagined to add and that was a cohesion to the thinly connected events of the original animated movie. Giving purpose and connection that take Mowgli (Neel Sethi) from point A to point B lends the film a real ambition making the stunning visuals only more of an achievement.

    Excellent 3D Release

    |
    Posted .

For those who already bought the initial 2D release, unless you have a 3D entertainment system to take advantage of the 3D, I don't know that the additional bonus features would be enough to justify double-dipping on this film. Now, that said, if you do have a 3D entertainment system, this release features some GREAT 3D - some of the best Disney has done in the past several years, or if you didn't buy the 2D release when it first came out, I would highly recommend this release just for the additional bonus content not offered in the 2D-only package. In terms of the film itself, I would say that this version of the Jungle Book goes quite a bit darker than that of the 1960's counterpart that Disney created decades ago, so I would caution parents of very young children to wait until your kids are a bit older before showing them this movie, as certain scenes could be a bit frightening. That said, it is quite a wonderful film, the plot flows nicely, and the cast performs very well.

The BEST "Jungle Book", that I have ever watched! Glorious, in color; attention to detail and a visual delight. The story, told simply and directly involves a little boy, raised by succored by Wolves, in combination with a Bear, Baloo and a wonderful Panther. The animals are animated, and speak, but you accept this because of the utmost care and perfection of each individual character. The voices of these remarkable creatures, headed by well known actors are perfection to the limit. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

A different kind of magic, not necessarily better

The live action cash grab is questionable of course, begging the question do we really NEED live action versions of Jungle Book, and Cinderella, and the Lion King, and Aladdin, and Dumbo. In the time of a Mary Poppins sequel, what separates a movie from being a cash grab is perhaps if it has something new or important to add, but ultimately these are family movies and if the point is just to entertain and show that we can do something new with the technology I'd say Jungle Book does it. It may be a big scary for a very young audience, which is of course its best audience, and Bill Murray and Christopher Walken both feel underused, but if you want to see a believable take on live action animals that look like they're successfully anthropomorphized by a director who certainly knows what he's doing and a cast that, even when underutilized, shines, this movie does it. Don't look for a new redefined Jungle Book, but be willing to be dazzled by how far technology has come and to be charmed by a few familiar voices coming from bodies you either never expected or have secretly hoped for for years.
