A great series based on the fictional book series written by Bernard Cornwell (mostly known for the Sharpe’s Rifles series). The main character is trying to get back to his home and reclaim his land, after his uncle betrayed him when his father was killed fighting against a Viking invasion.
Season one showed him growing up as a Viking slave, later earning his freedom, and vowing revenge against the Vikings who killed his adopted Viking family. In his quest for revenge, he joins up and helps King Alfred defeat the Vikings.
Season two has him undergoing additional trials of trust and suffering as a leader. The strength of both seasons is the human dynamics and politics between different factions of Vikings and Britons. Money and land will often buy temporary alliances, but the arrogance of man will always be their downfall.
Strategy and tactics are also used throughout the series. Militias have to practice their shield wall formations and without a plan, charging into a fortification will result in gruesome death with no followers to lead or glory with loot.
What sets this series apart from the tv series Vikings, which has more mystical elements based on legends, is the character is fictional set in a historical setting. Vikings meanwhile, is trying to depict historical characters in compressed timelines.
