This is a good movie at a very good price that I had been thinking about buying for a while. I was disappointed, but not surprised that it did not include a digital copy or DVD, so I am taking off one star. However, Vudu will let you buy a digital copy for $2 through the Disc to Digital program (in the Vudu app) once you own the blu-ray if that is important to you. The disc is older (from 2006) and there was some minor damage to the back of the case. The disc includes a lot of extras, which is nice.

    Epic Action Film

The Last Samurai is one of those rare Hollywood action epics set in feudal Japan. Tom Cruise, in my opinion, delivers reliably entertaining movies despite what you may think of him. I would rank this as one of his best as he is held captive and learns the way of the samurai. The Blu Ray is pretty straightforward, has a decent play factor, and it doesn't disappoint.

The blu-ray itself shows the movie is good quality (good enough until a 4k release that will hopefully be made). The movie itself is very very good. Please watch it if you haven't, if you even have a remote interest in films about war, life, or Samurai.

If you are a fan of Japanese Samurai culture and Tom Cruise, you cannot skip this movie. The storytelling style is superb and does not bore you till the end. Probably one the best samurai films to date. Love how the samurai are accurately portrayed even their fighting style unlike those Chinese versions where they fly all over the place. This is a modern classic and should belong to any movie collection.

I hadn't watched this movie for years, it was still great. Unfortunately it is an old bluray, it doesn't have advanced audio, like Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD, for this bluray.

This movie is great and the price is awesome ($8). For a Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy awesome price. As much or cheaper than just getting it on Blu-ray. It was hard to find. The website said it was in stock, but when I went to the store it wasn't. Definitely call before so they have it in hand, or just order it online, but pay for shipping (not worth it), save up $35 in your cart and get it then.

I saw this movie when it came out in the movie theaters and still love this movie. The spiritual awakening of Cruise's character is deep and the bond he forms with Kasumoto is intense. If you like movies that are about history or inspired by true events, then the Last Samurai is for you. The Blu Ray is a lot better than the DVD; scenes have more pop.

    Entertaining but historically innacurate

This is an entertaining movie but if you like Japanese history you might cringe a few times while watching it. Many different historical elements from different eras are mixed together and often it doesn't make any sense. Also, it is based on a true story but the hero of the story was French not American, his name was Jules Brunet. I don't understand why Hollywood has to distord the reality to appeal to its audience.

I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan but I love The Last Samurai. The East and Western worldview collide as Cruise brings his American worldview into various aspects of Eastern Japanese culture. The movie has so many memorable quotes including my favorite, "Tell me how he died...I will tell you how he lived."

My uncle never got a chance to see movies when he was younger because he was too busy working. Now that he is invalid, he wants to see every movie the he never had a chance to see. He started a DVD collection since I've been bringing him some every week.

    Adequate Blu Release

Love the film and I'll say that while it isn't quite a Braveheart or Gladiator (the reissue) Blu Ray release, it certainly does come close. It's an early Encode for the format so there really isn't much to be said other than hopefully one day this movie may get a 4k restoration 1080p release or hop on over to the UHD format, which as of now is still in its infancy. But this is the Last Samurai on Blu Ray. As of right now it's the only way to watch the movie unless it gets a rerelease in theaters.

Excellent movie, although the storyline was obviously made to value Tom Cruise performance. Picture is very good; the actors are all excellent; culturally, not sure it is very accurate, but it provides certainly a touch of exotism that is refreshing and unusual. Highly entertaining.

I had avoided this movie for years because I could not fathom Cruise as a samurai. However, I finally broke down to purchase it and see what all the positive hype was about. I'm so happy I did. This movie kept pure to the samurai code and I was very pleased with Cruise's part in this movie.

Yes its a Tom Cruise goes to lead army then falls in love with the enemy and tries to save them move. But the story telling is great, the cinematography and heart is superb and you really forget that you are watching tom cruise and at least for me bought the story and emotional journey.

Story revolves around an American military captain, who is tasked with training a modern Japanese army in order to replace the traditional samurai warriors. The captain is captured by the samurai and eventually comes to learn about their culture and way of life, ultimately joining the samurai cause. Though it can be a little slow at times, the film makes up for this with its visual beauty and the final confrontation that occurs at the end of the film.

I have loved this movie since it was first released and have the original DVD release which I have watched several times. Most all the reviews I see here are either for the Standard DVD and focus on the great story line and acting but not the quality of the DVD itself.

As a teacher I always look for visuals I can bring into my classroom. The Last Samurai is Hollywood enough to hold my students' attentions but also has a good amount of historical elements that give them the general idea of what the time period was like.
