When The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword first released, it was at the tail end of the Wii's lifespan, so a lot of folks missed out on this gem of a game. Now that it is on Switch, Zelda fans are in for more of a treat than they were initially.
Not only does the game look and sound better than ever, but if you were not particularly fond of the idea of having to play with motion controls, there is now an option to play with the buttons instead. I personally feel like the motion controls work better for combat, but I'm glad that this version is far more accommodating. There is a lot of quality of life stuff that has been added, such as being able to skip cutscenes, tutorials, and the excessive text that comes with finding a new item.
As for the base game itself, it's very reminiscent of Wind Waker in that there is an open sky world populated with floating islands for you to explore with the aid of a giant bird that you ride from place to place. There is a different world on the ground to traverse as well, which is where all of the dungeons take place. The dungeon design is phenomenal in this game, as are some of the boss encounters. There are a handful of sequences that the game could do without and some boss encounters are repeated far too much, but overall it's a solid game that holds up well if you've never played it before. Highly recommended

I originally reviewed this game when I 1st purchased it and was not so positive about it, but after spending more time with (and beating it) I feel quite differently.
I was originally very frustrated with the newly adopted "regular " controls that nintendo implemented since the original game was motion only, but after working through my frustrations and getting used to them (a good 5 to 10 hours, honestly) I came to appreciate the game for its unique experience.
Controls aside, there is a lot to like about Skyward Sword. You can clearly see how this game influenced BoTW in some ways (weapons and shields break and you can upgrade them), but the gameply is still linear like older entries in the franchise.
The graphics are beautiful, even for a 10 year old game, and flying around Skyhold is a highlight. The story is wonderfully told, albeit a little tedious at times, and the game is filled with wonderful characters throughout. I found the bosses quite challenging, especially with the controls being the way they are, so if you like a challenge this game is for you. The game is also quite lengthy, so you get your moneys worth.
My only real gripe (outside of the learning curve of the controls) is there really isn't any way to fast travel outside of buying an additional amiibo, which I think is a little devious of nintendo. Overall I'd highly recommend for zelda fans and gamers alike.

I want to start off by saying Skyward Sword on the Switch is extremely fun, it runs in 60 FPS in both docked and portable mode and never drops below that making the game feel responsive and fluid.
This time around they fixed the controls so they don't absolutely suck. The motion controls are setup basically the same as what was used on the Wii except with the Switch's joycons which are much more robust and built for that task. All you need to do is point the joy-con at the TV when you start the game or when enabling motion from button controls. It doesn't lose it's placement or slowly drift, making the motion controls actually useful.
The button controls do take a couple minutes to get used to, you operate links sword entirely using the right joystick. It's a little confusing and annoying at first but after about 10 minutes you start to get it down and it's natural after an hour.
If you've been looking to play the game and haven't had the chance or played the game on the Wii and lost your mind to the controls, this is a great version to come back to.
I do feel like for $60 they could have at least updated the textures even with the 60 FPS target, but it holds that target so well then I'm not going to hold it above their head. But other than that absolutely no complaints.

Excellent game; I can’t put it down. I never had a Wii, and this game came out relatively late in its lifecycle, but judging by various videos of seen in comparison, this “HD Remake” earned its name. Framerates are stable, and the “impressionist-style” graphics are sharp. While you can use a Pro Controller, I’ve been using the motion controls with the Joycons, and it generally feels pretty natural (minus the rolling mechanism, where you hold sprint, and “flick” the left Joycon, that just feels weird).
If you missed it the first time around, definitely pick it up, especially if it’s on sale. If you’ve found yourself tired of Breath of the Wild/Tears of The Kingdom, Skyward Sword might be up your alley. It feels more like a “traditional” Zelda game, and reminded me of Twilight Princess, and the N64 games.

A true gem in the Legend of Zelda series. The new Skyward Sword HD is a fantastic game with very intuitive controls, exciting action and a great story depicting the early lore of Zelda's history. I never played the original but this is a beautiful looking game with a gorgeous soundtrack and organic feeling gameplay. Its a must buy for any fan of Legend of Zelda, especially if you haven't played the original.

I've finally got this game on the switch as I didn't had a Wii before. The controls are different of course than BOTW as it was the olden days. I loved the different dungeons like before rather than now. If you want to experience Zelda from before, pick up this game. The first boss of this game is hard to beat. I put in 70 hours in this game! After beating it, there's a hero mode if you want to play as well.

Skyward Sword was a great release in 2011 that was both praised and vilified by its motion controls. At the time it was the first to allow for 1:1 action of playing a Zelda game, let alone any game, with true controller movement for swordplay. While it worked well enough, it also became tiresome to use for longer play sessions and some just did not want it. Now nearly a decade later the game has been remastered visually to support a full 1080p 60fps (instead of the original 480p 30fps). The visuals look great and the sound is amazing in full surround instead of the original Dolby prologic (stereo simulated surround). The option to play the game in full with button controls is great though there are a few quirks. You now control the camera and sword with the same joystick. A press of the L shoulder button engages the camera, where a flick up does an upward strike, flick right, swipes right, and so on. It works, but honestly I feel pressing the L button while sword fighting would have been better as it feels more natural. There is also the fact that this game is ten years old and more linear than Breath of the Wild. So while I would say Breath of the Wild is a superior game, the dungeons and general story in Skyward Sword are more traditional and worth playing. If you haven't played this game it's worth picking up, if you have, I would still say the changes are great and worth another go.

This is definitely worth the upgrade for Zelda fans. If you like or dislike the motion controls of the original, you’ll like these as they work perfectly this time. If you don’t want them, you don’t have to use them, either. Graphics and gameplay are excellent. Something different than Breath of the Wild and great with its own unique experience.

Overall this is one of my favorite Zelda games. The setting, the mood, the art, the story, the flying everything about this game is A++ ,10 out of 10, 5 stars. That being said, the Nintendo Switch version is a little janky mostly in the camera control, combat and sword movements. The Wii version had a flick of the right controller for sword movement and matched your direction in velocity. The camera was controlled by the thumb stick on the right hand. On the Switch both of these are the right thumbstick but to move the camera you have to hold down the left trigger and to swing the sword you move the thumb stick in the direction you want to start from then flick it towards the direction you want to end at. This is a lot more difficult to be precise at and in a lot of the combat especially boss battles the precision of the sword direction and velocity matter a lot. This chops it down to a four star for me but it's so beautiful on the Switch. I'd say if you want to play this to completion and get the most out of gameplay dig up and dust off your Wii and play it on there but for me, I've already played it to completion on the Wii, it was worth it to also have it in my Switch library just probably won't play it too much.

Controls Learning Curve

For the most part Nintendo just increased the resolution of the game without touching much else. There are still the motion controls which are probably the best way to play the game. Traditional button controls exist but there is a bit of a learning curve. My sword never seems to go where I want it to when using the stick controls. That being said this is one of the best stories ever told in a Zelda game. I'm glad to see the game get new life in it on and the switch and if you can get over those technical difficulties then you will enjoy the game.

As a long time fan of the Legend of Zelda series, original Skyward Sword on the Wii was first one that didn't attract me. The motion controls were strange and unresponsive, and visuals seemed a step back from Wind Waker.
Now on Switch, visuals are enhanced to 1080p, and 60 fps. The colors and smooth animations look gorgeous both on tv or handheld.
Controls feel much better than they were on Wii, though still not perfect, as they still can lose track in boss fights. But for the most part they feel 1 to 1 motion, and are very fun when using slingshots or bow and arrow types of items.
A big bonus, which was one of reasons I gave this version a chance, is that you can skip motion controls entirely and play the game almost as a traditional Zelda game, but losing camera controls, as the right analog becomes dedicated for moving sword.
Story is as good as most of the games in the series, and soundtrack is beautiful and powerful.
Highly recommend this game for any Legend of Zelda fan, specially for those who skipped it on Wii like I did. It isn't perfect, but it is fun and gorgeous.
It might feel a little restricted when compared to Breath of the Wild, but those who played other games in the series will recognize building blocks for free roaming and traversal that became fully fleshed out in Breath of the Wild.

This is an excellent re-release of a title that you may have missed out on because of when it was originally released. The gameplay is still excellent, the new controls work fairly well, and the story holds up wonderfully. This is truly worth a re-visit or a fresh look if you've never played this before.

Skyward Sword was a bold title in the Zelda franchise, in some ways even more than Breath of the Wild. The motion controls left a lot to be desired for players unused to such a setup, and the original Wii version's lack of alternatives meant that you either put up with the controls, or skip the title entirely.
Skyward Sword HD features a number of quality of life improvements over the original. Not only do you now have the option to play entirely with just a controller, the game's previously hand-holding-heavy elements have been greatly alleviated. The companion Fi is much less chatty and intrusive during gameplay, allowing players new and old to enjoy their adventure with less interruptions than what was seen in the 2011 Wii version. The Joy-con motion controls are a blast to use, though do expect some occasional input hiccups if you swing too wildly.
Story, graphics, and music are some of the best seen in the series, all brought to life with greater clarity for this updated rerelease.

A very fun game and one of my favorite Zeldas. They fixed the problems with blurry backgrounds the original had while keeping the pretty Impressionism-inspired colors. Some things like fence gratings on the Isle of Songs look worse though because of the upscaler they used or some other technical thing I don't understand. I loved the original, and I'm very happy to now have it in a portable form. While I never disliked the motion controls, the new stick controls are implemented well. I'm a little disappointed they don't have handheld jerk controls for the spin attacks and fatal blow, as they could do that in Mario Odyssey and that movement would feel closer to the original and easier to execute. But that's nitpicking.
