A strange and memorable film
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're okay with artistic elements that you need to think about to really unpack, and you're willing to be slightly challenged and disturbed by some strange moments [and heavy themes], you will not regret watching The Lighthouse. It demands a second viewing. After watching the movie once and trying to understand the themes behind it, I wasn't sure what to really think. But after a second viewing, the SUPERB acting, the unique and gripping visuals, and the challenge of getting into the mindset of the filmmaker makes this a recommended movie that I would have to say lands around 3 1/2 stars out of 4. However, as a friend of mine says, I do tend to like "artsy-fartsy" films that respect your intelligence enough to fill in the gaps, so stay away from this movie if you know that you really only like straightforward or more "usual" films in terms of dramas.

Willem Dafoe forever
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Robert Eggers’ follow up from his 2015 masterpiece, The Witch (not the VVitch), is truly a marvelously filmed, written, and performed film. One thing I love about Eggers’ films is that the dialogue stays true to the era, making the mood and interactions feel more genuine. The old sailor talk is really one of the best things about this. Willem Dafoe is at his absolute best. Robert Pattinson is wonderful as well. The cinematography in The Lighthouse is absolutely beautiful. But despite all of that, the storyline itself felt a little hard to follow. A lot of imagery was used throughout, imagery that told and reflected certain mythological stories. And those are stories I’m not familiar with, so really it was a tad bit too much for me. Still, one of 2019’s best. Heavily overlooked.

Thrilling and Stylistically Bold
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is not a horror movie in the ordinary style, by which I mean the two men watching the lighthouse are not fighting against some kind of ghost or sea monster for their survival. The film is less literal in the way it depicts the characters' rivalry, their checkered pasts, their compromised mental health, and the way all of it spirals into madness during the isolation of a freak storm. This is certainly a tense and scary film with powerhouse performances from DaFoe and Pattinson. I loved the black-and-white cinematography and the decision to film in an old-fashioned "square" aspect ratio to heighten the claustrophobia. Give it a try if you're looking for something truly unique!

A very good thriller, but lacking home release
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie was very intense, odd, and atmospheric similar to how The Shining was. The black and white cinematography was really great. There was one shot that looked like a crane, but was being pulled up by a rig was reminiscent of the crane shot in Citizen Kane. It has my favorite acting from Willem Dafoe. I loved him as Green Goblin, but this was completely beyond that. The slipcover looks really nice, glossy shine to the cover. It was a missed opportunity the manufacturer didn't commit to the black and white theme completely. The Blu-ray case is a standard cheap blue Blu-ray case and the disc is blue. There was also not that many extra features, but that was expected with a smaller release. Overall, a good release that could've been better.

one of the best of 2019
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Initially wasn’t too big on The Witch back when I saw it in theaters, but I was very much excited to see what Robert Eggers would do next. The Lighthouse is god tier level work. The black and white photography, the use of shadow detail and lighting, the performances from both Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, the musical score and sound design—this is all masterwork at play throughout the entire thing. It’s audacious, it’s weird, it’s funny, and it never comes off as pretentious. It’s an arthouse film that feels like it’s not above anyone or anything. This was one of the best theater experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m grateful that this movie exists. Love, love, love it!

Purgatory was never this entertaining
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A truly unique film. You are not quite sure what you have just watched after the first viewing but I bet you will want to go back and rewatch almost immediately. The film supports various interpretations based on what each individual viewer brings to the film. For example, for me it was a metaphor for purgatory, a place where one must atone for one's sins before you enter eternity. William Dafoe is outstanding in this film, alternately scary and comical. Pattinson is also outstanding as the aggrieved underling.

Creepy and Absurd!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The film is both funny and creepy. It's the kind of film that I expect from Willem Dafoe and the kind of film that I like to see Robert Pattinson star in as he does a Twilight palate cleanse on his way to becoming the next Batman. It's madness, Greek mythology, tragedy all in one. Personally, I got a bit of a Triangle vibe from this film. Maybe that's just me. I enjoyed the film, so I do recommend it. However, it might be a hard sell to some because it's mostly about these two characters, presented in a 1.19:1 aspect ratio and in black and white. That might turn some people away. If not, prepare for a weird ride.

Excellent film but not for the faint of heart
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Lighthouse is a fairly simple movie. It stars two men, lighthouse keepers, and them only. It’s shot in black and white, simply no color, and in letterbox format like old school tube TV’s. But what comes from such a simple premise is a mind bending, unforgettable experience. It’s not a movie for everyone. It’s slow, little to no dialogue in many scenes, many dream sequences and visions. It was also quite confusing at times. But it’s well worth the watch, considering it’s also under 2 hours. If you’ve seen the directors previous films you know what’s up. Good for fans of mystery and art-house type movies.

Unsettling. Atmospheric. Personally, I loved it.
||Posted . Owned for 11 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie was unusual and interesting in all the right ways. The cinematography is great and it achieves a very palpable atmosphere. Though I can definitely say this movie is not for everyone, it is a great for those seeking something off the beaten path and enjoy intrigue. Robert Pattinson's performance was great but Willem Defoe? How he didn't walk away with more awards for his performance is beyond me.

A24 Delivers Again!
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Lighthouse is a film you just simply need to experience. A Lovecraftian tale of terror and surrealism, it follows two lighthouse workers in 19th Century New England. Gruff and weathered Wake berates and overworks newcomer Winslow, as both begin to fall into a spiral of fear, isolation, surrealism, and nightmares. Can they trust each other? Is their fear for real? Watch this gem from A24, and ride the crashing wave, all the way to the shocking and twisted ending.

Really outside the box.....
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is really a movie for endie lovers. It is a diamond in the rough. It's black and white and that of course ads to the drama. This was one of those movies that leaves you with a thought.... Did I figure this one out or not. It is different, and I think you will need to see it several times to grasp the concept. A+ 5 star. B. Beckner

You’ll definitely need to watch it a few times
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I watched this movie based on Robert Egger’s (creator & director) work on The Witch. This is definitely a different type of film and will require the viewer to engage with what’s on screen. The film is stylistically impressive and simultaneously familiar and different from his previous work. All of the acting performances are solid. Please keep in mind this is not your typical movie, but definitely worth watching and exploring.

Strange and Superb Ride
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a huge fan of The VVitch, I was very excited for this movie, and it does not disappoint. The film is less about direct horror but still has those elements in bits and pieces. It's funnier than I thought it'd be, with several lines I've gleefully shouted at my friends. Even if the true horror of The VVitch isn't there, The Lighthouse is just as tense, and keeps you wondering where is it all going.

Great service, and the Movie is great too.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Shipping was fast, and everything was intact upon arrival. The Lighthouse is probably the best film of the year. It's more than just horror, with many elements of suspense, drama, mystery and even dark comedy. This marks the best performances of both Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson's careers. The story is mind bending and really sticks with you. Check it out. There's enchantment in the light.

A Dark and Stormy Tale
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Looking for a movie that is not a part of the normal, mundane routine? Then you want to watch this movie! Dafoe and Pattinson play a pair of lighthouse keepers in 1890. What was meant to be a 4 week shift pivots into a descent into extreme madness. Talented up-and-coming director Robert Eggers has created a uniquely talented tale of life as a 'wicker'. Highly recommended!!

Atmosphere over shocks
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This flick is filthy and delicious - a swirling maelstrom of horrific rage and loneliness and repression and repulsion and secrets and and Greek tragedy. The marked effects of men trapped with each other and the absence of women. This is a strong follow-up from the director of the VVitch. The blu-ray is a bare-boned release, but it should be on every horror fan's shelf.

Like with many A24 films it's best to stay open minded for different experiences and this movie is one of those. Shot ina 4:3 aspect and in black and white starring only 2 actors is a must watch

One of the Best Movies of the Year
||Posted . Owned for 8 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie won’t be for everyone, but I found it to be a great throwback to 1930s horror, as well as a great dive into isolation and insanity. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are both the best they’ve ever been. I wish there was a 4K copy of this movie, but the blu-ray looks phenomenal as well.
