Lovers of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings ought to own this version good for both adults and children. It just came to my attention very recently. Since I own so many copies of LOTR in theatrical, Blu-ray, extended, and all 3 collectors set box extended versions with Weta sculptures, this 1978 LOTR animation had to be seen, first on my new Best Buy Sony XR 55 X90J SmartTV, and then purchased with a $5.00 Best Buy coupon. Hurray!

It was the 70s where like vintage Disney animated movies they used live actors to than composition animation over which gave a unique film experience. It’s not as amazing as the live action counterpart but being the first movie does what it can at the time. I’m glad to add this to my LOTR movie collection and you should before it’s not available to watch on any streaming service to watch with family this early rendition.

Finally a high definition treatment for this great movie. I highly recommend this DVD.

The 1978 animated version of LOTR is quite an original and special adaption of the fantasy novel. However, I really only recommend it to true fans, or obsessive fans even. The abrupt ending is quite jarring to anyone that knows the story. It might even anger you. Frankly, it's unfinished. But despite that, it's an interesting look and great first try to put Tolkiens masterpiece to film. I'd try and rent it somehow first to see if you would appreciate it, before buying.

This movie really brings back memories. I wish they still had the bundle with all three movies, but I really enjoyed this one.

Viewing this brought back many childhood memories. I will enjoy sharing this with my Children.

An amazing vision and experience. A must have for all fans.

Wish it were on Blu-Ray but this is all there was for many years until Peter Jackson made those movies.

Great movie. Good addition to my movie collection.

This DVD was not as good as I hoped, but as a Lord of the Rings fan it still was a must see.

Nice movie to watch along with Peter Jackson's amazing take on Tolkien's trilogy. This movie takes you to the beginning of the story with Bilbo Baggins and his quest along with other Hobbits. This is a fun, fun film. Not to be missed. Watch this! Especially fans of Tolkien's trilogy.
