This Billy Wilder film one Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor by Ray Milland. Based on a book by Charles Jackson, we follow the struggles of the severe alcoholic, Don Birnam (Milland), his brother Wick and his girl Helen St. James (Jane Wyman). The film does a good job depicting the severity and destructive nature of Birnam's addiction. Wick and Helen have their hearts in the right place but clearly have long been enablers of Don's drinking. I particularly enjoyed the conversations involving Don and the bartender, Nat. While an excellent film that I highly recommend, the ending seemed too simplistic and left me dissatisfied.
