The movie is good and the oicture and sound is great, when it was workung- but i had to skip a scene to get past a part that was skipping. Took the disc out to see it had a scratch. Bought it brand new in store and waited too long to watch it so i cant return it. I’m very careful with my discs and it stayed unopened on my shelf until my first watch. Too bad.. I use a panasonic ub-820 and it works fine on other discs, so its just the disc that came damaged brand new with a scratch.

    Definitely not Ridley Scott's best

Anytime Ridley Scott directs a movie I must see it. If it's a science fiction movie I get especially excited as I'm sure most people do. The Martian, however, is my least favorite Ridley Scott Sci-Fi movie to date. It's not a bad movie by any means and it's better than most of the rubbish Hollywood churns out these days. My biggest qualm is that I feel Matt Damon's character isn't very sympathetic. Yes, he is stranded on Mars by himself, but he is a brilliant scientist who is conveniently multi-disciplined in all the fields of science that he needs to survive. In addition he is able to communicate with NASA while he is stranded so he is not really alone. And the ending feels a little outlandish and even cartoonish. I do recommend this movie for the perfect special effects, the realistic dialogue, and the accuracy of the science. The special features on the Blu-ray are completely uninteresting and disappointing.

This review is based on the movie, the packaging, the extras and the quality of the movie in 4k get 5 stars but movie itself was slow paced and just dragged on. I turned it off halfway through I could not continue to torture myself. I will finish watching and I hope it picks up but from what I watched it is going to be tough to power through and get to the end.

I bought the 4K release and then decided that 4K format isn't woth the price. So I returned the item and bought "plain" old blu-ray. I haven't watched the movie yet. The whole idea of a mission to Mars is cheesy. People get to Mars and there's some mega-intelligent vegetables in charge or else John Carradine is a wizard in charge or else Pia Zidora is there and the martians are blue skinned and wear scuba maks. So why not see how Matt Damon reacts? Maybe he'll meet a barbarian princess or some mutants. Serious, how about love-starved martian women dressed in leather? Have people forgotten Devil Girl from Mars? I hope not!

I got this mainly for the 4k HDR experience and the convenience of having it in digital but unfortunately the digital is only available in HD 1080p. Hence, I am returning it. iTunes offer this movie download at a much cheaper price only it is not the extended version but still at least it is in 4K HDR.

I bought this movie blindly, simply because I missed it, in the theaters and always wanted to see it. I LOVE SCI-FI!!!!!!! And this movie is great sci-fi and I really, really, really like it!!!!!!! The only reason I give it three stars is because it is supposedly a comedy and I just don't, for the life of me, "get it"!!!!! I never so much as cracked one smile through the whole movie!!! Like I said - GREAT SCI-FI but let's face it, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was funnier!!!!!!!!!!

The movie is very interesting and held its moments that kept you on the edge of your seats. Simultaneously, I must be honest that it kind of dragged. Myself as a biologist I was fond of the ingenious ways he circumvented his obstacles. The 4K quality was very crisp too. Aside from that, I would encourage you to watch it but not worthwhile to own it.

well, the film was a good one, for a new sci-fi film, with the intention to show a very detailed back drop and land formations. But most of all the seriousness of the question what happens when you get lost in a space desert? i believe there is more to it and maybe a second follow up film on account of 2 scenes where the base of the crews wreckage was thrown across the plantation an was it the storm that threw the machinery or was it someone or something else?

I read a lot of good reviews from this movie on rotten tomatoes. Also saw good reviews on here. I thought it was an ok movie. Not all that great. I think Interstellar is better than this. This have a more humor tone to it. I could imagine as he was the lone survivor on Mars so he has to humor himself. Interstellar had a more serious tone to it.I also thought the acting was better. However, this is a good sci-fi film.

Some good visuals and funny moments, but I wish Ridley Scott would have used the time for more Alien films or spent it on the Ford/Gosling Blade Runner sequel. Feels like we got a much better Matt Damon astronaut in Interstellar and like this was a downgrade. Good for a viewing or two, but you never feel any danger here. I have a feeling this was a much better read.

    An Extended Disappointment

The film THE MARTIAN is an entertaining speculation about the challenges of going to Mars. It is highly recommended, but the question is - what about the extended edition? I don't think there is enough additional footage or features to require a double dip. On the other hand, if you don't have the original film, you will enjoy the extended version.

This is a movie for the people who like to root for the underdog. Matt is stuck up there to fend for himself. There is no food, and no resources. So He has to make food, and try to survive as long as possible while the others try to plan a mission to save him. He hits some obstacles when his potato farm is destroyed in a storm up on the moon.

    Far-fetched even for Sci-Fi

The movie starts with them already on Mars, with no backstory about how they had passed their time in transit. While the special effects are good, the plot was lacking as to how the botanist knew how to do every job known to man, including doing surgery on himself. Even for the science fiction genre, this flick was pretty far fetched.

I purchased this movie as I could not wait to see it. I was sort of dissapointed as the movie is very slow most of the time. While the acting was very good the 3D while good was not over the top like say Transformers. i will probably sell my copy on Ebay as I will never watch it again. Just my opinion but I do love Sci-Fi,

Dumbed down version of a good novel

It follows the novel, but with none of the emotion, tension, or science of a good book. The book went into the thoughts of what the stranded astronaut was thinking and why. The emotional ups and downs of thinking through each crisis. The movie just shows him erecting each device, like it was part of the training.

Normally when you buy a 4K Blu-Ray version of any movie you get the 4K digital version well not with this movie. Purchased the movie in 4K mostly for the 4K digital copy and was only provided with the HDX (1080P) version, so that was alil disappointing

The movie itself isn't bad, but bland. The story is pretty basic and you basically know how it'll end. The real "drama" is him surviving on Mars and that's where it bogs down with boredom. Not a bad generic sci-fi film with extremely real elements.

It's a pretty good movie. Probably only going to watch it once, but it was worth watching. A little slow in some areas, but overall I enjoy it. The acting was all really well done, but the story was just ok.
