I'm one of those people who says the book is always better, and this is no exception, but the movie adaptation of The Martian is great. With the time a movie allows, this one stayed very close to the book with a few standard Hollywood changes. I actually liked the ending of the movie better than the end of book - a true rarity for me. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was because while the book seemed entirely plausible, some movie scenes made it very clear that the story was fiction, and of course, I would have loved to see more than what was in the final cut. Overall, still one of my favorite movies, and one I recommend to anyone who will listen.

Matt Damon is terrific as a stranded astronaut in the thrilling movie, "The Martian". Though Damon dominates the screen time, a fine cast of supporting actors (Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, et. al.) also help to make this a memorable visual treat with their efforts to help get him back to Earth. Refreshingly, the special effects, enhance, not dominate the film. This film is certainly Oscar-worthy!

I first saw this in the theater when it first came out so I wanted to try out my new Samsung 4k 3D panel with it. I wasn't disappointed. The Martian landscape looks great in 3D and the ships flying by are also great. All in all it makes adds a special viewing experience to this fantastic film. By all means if you haven't seen "The Martian" do so in any form but go for at least Blu-Ray if you can.

Overall, an enjoyable movie that truly has some new ideas. The acting was excellent, as was most of the plot, and the cinematography (on Mars) was amazing. If the option existed, I would have given The Martian 4 1/2 stars as I thought that the rescue mission (near the very end of the movie) was VERY far fetched. However, I will undoubtedly watch this movie, a few more times, in the coming years.

"The Martian" did its homework. There is alot of realism in the film. Politics, humor, and ingenuity are thwon into the mix so the Viewer does not have to suspend their snese of disbelief as one does for other sci fi movies. Bonus featres are well done.

This is a good, thinking-man's sci-fi movie. Although it's a bit unrealistic rearding the personalities of the astronauts (real astronauts don't look like THE MARTIAN castmembers, nor do they talk/act that way). Real astronauts are not magazine models. And real astronauts are more robotic/methodical (Spock-like). Regardless, it's a good movie, fairly realistic scientifically, and is a refreshing change from the formulaic "damsel in distress" flicks. It's good to see a sci-fi movie based on "working the problem" that real-life space exploration will invariably present to real astronauts. If you love science and sci-fi, this is a good movie to own.

Matt Damon shines as botanist Mark Watney, stranded on Mars when the first manned mission goes awry. With only what his crew left behind, an unhealthy dose of 70s music, and his wits, Mark must figure out how to survive in an environment that is almost antithetical to human life. Damon brings Mark Watney to life in a must-see film that will leave you holding your breath until the credits roll.

I seldom purchase DVD's considering how easy it is to find content to stream. I saw this at the theater not expecting to like it. My wife wanted to see it and I came along. It was fantastic . . . from the beginning to the end. When I saw that Best Buy was running a sale on DVD's I went the same day. I had to have it. The combination of serious science, drama and humor make this a REAL movie.

"The Martian," Ridley Scott's film about an astronaut surviving on a desolate planet is not only Sci-Fi at its best, but a good story that Matt Damon brings to life and gets you wondering "What would you do?" He summons all of his ingenuity and courage to endure a seemingly impossible situation, then must deal with loneliness on top of that. Overall I would recommend all to give it a look.

This is a great movie , especially if you are into space. You can nitpick some science based mistakes but it's still a good space based movie. Many people do find the mistakes and completely dismiss the film, but you got to know this is not a documentary. People had the same problem with Apocolypto, and too I would say if you wanted true to life information then stay home and watch NatGeo or the discovery channel. I get discussing the mistakes in a science based movie , but saying it's a bad film because of it is just as bad, I mean at least it started a discussion about science,

This movie was much more entertaining than another film. I watched Interstellar and was so bored, I really thought this movie was going to be like that. Not having read the book I was expecting this movie to suck but after 15 minutes it was captivating. It was a great story leaving me interested to keep watching the movie. I won't spoil any of the plot only to say its worth a watch.

We finally got around to watching this blu ray dvd movie. It arrived promptly when we ordered it and was well packaged so there was no damage to the contents of the order. No spoilers here from me, but my son, wife and I were all very pleased. I now wish we would have watched it sooner!

The Martian is a wonderful movie. It is a testament to one man's will to survive and adapt to a condition where survival is next to nil. As a botanist, Matt Damon utilize his skillful knowledge and any engineering feat to survive on an uninhabitable planet. This steelbook version is beautiful and truly enhances the experience of this movie. it is definitely a collector item.

Highly, highly recommended for anyone who likes action/adventure/scifi in general and especially for anyone who likes their scifi realistic and believable. And for anyone who remembers what it was like when the space program captivated the world with Neil Armstrong taking "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" and Apollo 13's "Houston, we've had a problem."

I liked this movie. I thought that it was fun to watch and see how and what this person did that was stranded on Mars. Well I gave a little of the plot away, but what happens from that point on - I didn't give away. There's still suspense and questions to be resolved - so I recommend seeing it. I hope that others get satisfaction and have fun when watching it. I was stingy with the one star but I have to leave room when comparing to the best movie I have ever seen.

Probably the best film I saw in 2015, this disc (Blu-Ray 3D) has a steller transfer but limited added value content. Fox has confirmed that a "Special Edition" package will be coming later this year with a Scott commentary, possible longer cut of the film and a great deal more bonus features (as you would expect from a Ridley Scott film). Definitely will be worth the double dip!

A team of astronauts has set up a habitat on Mars for scientific discovery but an intense storm cuts their mission short. During an emergency evacuation from the planet's surface, Matt Damon is carried away in the storm and the readout on his suit flatlines. With no way to find him in the storm and believing him to be dead, the crew evacuates the planet and heads home. The only thing is, he didn't die. With no way of leaving, he has to figure out a way to survive. It's the ultimate Robinson Crusoe/ Cast Away. Terrific movie that highlights man's strength of character in the face of overwhelming odds.

I think the key here is to watch it after Interstellar because Matt Damon goes from space-defeated rat to a can-do-it-in-space MacGyver protagonist. The audio is absolutely awesome on this disc. Cannot understate how good it is. The visuals with HDR blow away any steamed version.
