Styx are back to the future, sound like their past

Early in my years of loving rock music, Styx was a band that I loved to listen to on an ongoing basis. With their concept records, theatrics, and just pure classic rock sound, you could not go wrong. Now, 14 years later, the band has come up with another concept album, and I am glad they did. With a simple concept, of a crew on a mission to Mars, they took this nearly 43 minute album and brought it all together into one cohesive piece of music. Each song from the perspective of a character in the story, they sing about the trials and tribulations of taking on this mission. From what I have heard, and please do not quote me verbatim about it, the band had gone back to an old school style of making this album in the studio, with older equipment, old school techniques, and that signature Styx sound, the way it ended up sounding, this trip to Mars in the future, sounds just like it came out of a rocket ship back to their late 70's, early 80's best. If you have been a fan of their Tommy Shaw era sound, then this will be a great treat! I have not removed it from my CD player since I bought it the day of release, June 16th. At the very least, go to their official YouTube page and watch their first video for the album, Gone Gone Gone, to get a feel. If you like that, then I think you will enjoy the great harmonies and clique that this band has on this album.

Most bands get worse, but this CD from Styx is really good. It tells a story as you listen along and I did not expect much of it but it is really good. Must have for Styx fans.

I don't know about you, but I enjoyed (and still enjoy) many of the songs of the rock bands that cut their teeth in the 1970's. Styx was among them and they put out three of their best albums in the 70's ("The Grand Illusion", "Pieces of Eight" and "Cornerstone"). Besides their classic prog/pop/rock sound, wonderful songwriting and the most tasteful use of synthesizers of any rock band before or since, these records (especially "The Grand Illusion") were "concept albums". Such a term has become somewhat lost on the listeners of the post-modern rock world. But besides the great songs on these classic albums, it was what made listening to an "album" worthwhile in the first place (in many respects). It's what made the recording's message, as a whole, so cohesive. Styx has returned to form in 2017 and, in particular, to "that form" on this newest release, "The Mission". The concept message on this record is about space travel, which may or may not peak your interest. But that's what it is and it is full of that signature sound and performance that made their 1970's releases so special. So even if the message of "The Mission" is not at the forefront of your concerns, the sonic part of it will be. Excellent return to form for Styx!

This is an excellent CD and a great return to form. Been a fan since 1978 and if you like Styx classics from Equinox to Pieces of Eight you will like this album. It has great harmonies, melodies and riffs. They intentionally stayed true to the sound and style that made their records great - right down to their choices of equipment, but yet it still sounds new and fresh. There are little nods here and there to songs like Mother Dear, Man in the Wilderness and others. There is a story, but the songs also stand on their own. And if you've never heard Styx, this is a great place to start.

A fantastic return to form that has you thinking that it's the late 1970's again. This is the first new studio Styx album in 14 years, and it's a great effort. Tommy Shaw's voice is crystal clear and the production on the project is really full as well. Elements of prog rock are also sprinkled in this concept album, keyboardist Lawrence Gowan stands out on several tracks both musically and vocally. If you've seen them on tour during the past 17 years, you know they bring the goods live, and now they do it in the studio as well!!!!! Buy this release!!!!!!!!

A friend told me I should get this CD. I didn't even know Styx was still recording! So I bought the CD and have pretty much been listening to it nonstop whenever I'm in my car. It's like I'm back in my teen/early 20s years, enjoying one of my favorite bands again. The variety of the music styles, learning the lyrics, melodies, and harmonies, and the driving beat of many of the songs just keep me coming back for more. I cannot get enough of this CD.

I absolutely love this CD by the legendary rock group Styx! This concept album is one of the best I have heard out of any band in a long time. If you love the classic sound of Styx, then you will love this album! I just wish they would have had the vinyl in stock. The cover is stunning and tells the story if you care to look close enough.

I like it when bands from the 70s and 80s are still rocking on tour with their hits. I like it even more when they put out new music in 2017 that is worthy of their catalogue and is something worth listening to. I must admit I like Cyclorama better song-wise, but this is definitely worth purchasing and adding to your library. The Mission is a success!

Styx is a band noted for its dramatic leanings... this CD is not an exception to that rule. The phrase "bit off more than they can chew" kept running through my head while I was listening to it. If you like the band, you'll probably like the CD, but don't expect another 'Grand Illusion'...

I love theme albums and this one is truly great. It reminds me of Paradise Theater. The entire album is true to the theme, using even mission control sound effects. All the songs are enjoyable and remind me why Styx is still going strong.

This is in my own opinion a great concept album. As a huge fan of Styx, I was delighted by new music that has the classic Styx sound of the Grand Illusion era. My personal favorite tracks are "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "Radio Silence".

On Mission, Styx returns to the classic sound of their 70's and 80's albums and to the "concept" album. Welcome back to both

This is on par with the late 70's early 80's peak. So long since a studio release this is nowhere near a dissapointment,
