I have to admit I haven't seen it yet, which is why I only gave it four stars, however several people, including my mother, have told me that I absolutely have to see it, so when I was in Best Buy looking at movies and saw it at a good price I picked it up. It's got some great actors - George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and John Goodman, and the story line looked interesting, plus it got decent reviews. So, I figured for about $10 it was worth checking it out.

The movie was based on the book of the same name. The film tells the story of a small group of men who were recruited to find and help restore stolen art work. During WWII the Nazi’s “borrowed” Looted really, hundreds of thousands of works of art, (paintings & sculpture), books, furniture and jewelry from Museums and private family collections, mostly Jews all over Europe. The movie has a great cast of characters, based on the real people who were involved, staring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Kate Blanchett, Bill Murray and John Goodman. The producers added some action and drama that did not really take place, but it is still a very good moive. I found it very enjoyable

Very good film adaptation of an incredible story

The movie is based on a book about a basically forgotten story from World War II: a group of art experts in the army who worked tirelessly (and often alone) to save the art treasures of European nations from destruction by the war, and also strove to find stolen artwork and treasures. While they obviously had to change and condense parts of the book to fit into a movie's run time, I thought this was a very faithful adaptation of the story, and if you read the book, you can identify traits of the real Monuments Men that were used to create the fictional characters in the movie. Well-made movie with good special features. Quality visuals and audio. Well worth buying.

Good movie that shows the efforts of the allies to preserve and recover artifacts of historical significance from the germans grasps during the 2nd world war. The movie does not go into heavy detail and relys on basics to tell the story of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program under the Civil Affairs and Military Government Sections of the Allied armies that was established in 1943 to help protect cultural property in war areas during and after World War II.

This film was snubbed by critics and the Oscars. It is a very good heartfelt drama about men in trying times doing something good for mankind. It is a film that shows you don't have to have nudity, special effects, big summer action blow up, etc... to make a good film. When I saw this film in the theater on opening weekend the whole audience applauded at the end during credits. Deserved more attention from the critics. The film kind of reminded me of movies from the golden era of cinema in the black and white days when there were no special effects and actors gave performances with feelings.

Good Family Film With Serious Undertones

I enjoyed that the material was presented without the obligatory gore excess on which most war-time movies focus. While war is horrible, the dedication to recover art stolen was unknown to me. More should've been shown on the attempts to return - any info on how much actually made it back to the rightful owners, I didn't see. But this is a good film a family could watch together, and should promote some excellent discussions.

I have always enjoyed the chemistry between Matt Damon and George Clooney. So it was especially entertaining to watch them in a WWII movie, one of my favorite eras for films. The movie was a light approach to an event I didn't even know happened in WWII, the thief of master works of art by the Germans. I enjoyed a movie and learned something new about this period of history.

I did not have the opportunity to see the movie at the theater. When I viewed the dvd, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It involved a topic that I was totally ignorant about. All I knew about the subject matter was watching the Burt Lancaster movie about stealing back the train with all the art aboard! Basically I enjoyed the "all star" cast and the occasional humor thrown in.

I think most people went into this expecting some epic story, whereas I think it's really good that it got downgraded based on our expectations being too high. I enjoyed it, thought it was cast extremely well. If all you're looking for is a shoot em up war film then this probably isn't for you. I still find all the different stories and what occurred during WW 2 to be fascinating, so I enjoyed it.

I liked the premise of this movie and the cast of characters were fantastic but I felt that the story was watered down for the benefit of entertainment and comedic value. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie and it allowed me know about a part WWII that I am sure not very many people know about but I also felt that it may have been better served as a slightly more serious movie...imho.

Monuments Men is now one of my favorite WW II movies. It tells the story of an aspect of the war that is relatively unknown, but it was so important to the overall strategy of the war...free the world, and save the best of mankind. Saving our collective culture was a critical part of saving our souls during the war. I am very pleased with the extras included in the movie, although, like any history movie, I always believe there can be more extras for a movie like this. Overall a very good movie!

It was good, but could've been better. Some of the music sounded a little too slapstick for the movie. I got this because I love Woman In Gold, but this didn't quite love up to expectations.

Given all the famous talent like John Goodman for instance this should have been a winner? However, it's based on a true story over a long period of time so it was difficult to cram it all in? Which made the first half of the movie difficult to follow. It got better toward the end and given the history of the events I'd watch it again.

A mission to recover the stolen art of Europe and return the pieces to the proper owners...a treasure hunt worth undertaking. The versatile cast keep the movie going forward...a light moment here, a close call there, a triumph here, a tragedy there, even hints at the darkness of WWII...the story is always in the forefront. I like the story and how the movie handles it. Was saving this art worth it...yeah, is the movie worth watching...YEAH! Not too heavy, not too light...just right.

The Monuments Men is a good movie that offers a different side of World War II. You don't have to have an Art History degree to appreciate this film. The cast works wonderfully together and the story is very engaging. The blu-ray has commentary, more information on the actual Monuments Men but only two deleted scenes, but doesn't feel like it's lacking.

The events in this film are fictionalized for dramatic effect; but the story of the WW II Monuments Men is true and I applaud George Clooney for bringing it to the screen. With this much talent in a movie, including Matt Damon, Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett, I want to love it. But some pacing and tonal problems take away some of my enthusiasm.

Though I wouldn't rank this movie along with some of the mega blockbusters out there, it is still worth watching. You get a World War II movie and some fact based history [Hollywood style] in that there were soldiers who were hunting down artwork that was looted by the German Army. I never new such an operation existed till this movie came out and you probably didn't know about it either. It has a good cast of actors to boot.

This is a good adventure / quest / buddy / war story. While it is based in actual events it does take a fair amount of poetic license. The story is good and has a good moral to go with it. It does remind us that there are some things that are worth dying for just as there are some things that make life worth living.
