One of Robert Mitchum's Best Roles................

"Night of the Hunter" was actor Charles Laughton's first directorial attempt. He hit a 'home run' by playing Robert Mitchum against his normal heroic roles and presented him in the character of a psychotic, phony preacher that gives this film its eerie and very evil antagonist. The film's mood is made more darkly eerie with its use of low and shadowy lighting that enhances the story of this strangely evil preacher's efforts to recover the cache of stolen and well hidden money a deceased father had left with his widow and young children. The film is photographed using low lighting which emphasizes the darkness of the story and lends itself to the goosebumps you will feel as the story develops. You will cheer for the grandmother, of the now-orphaned children (told you it was a 'dark' story with lots of hair-raising events perpetrated by one of filmdom's most bizarrely evil characters) with her, no-nonsense, final un-dolng of the evil preacher's reign of terror. You will never forget this film or Robert Mitchum's superb performance. You won't regret having this one in your film library. You will be watching it over and over. It's that good!

If you think old black & white movies aren't scary ... you haven't seen this one! Robert Mitchem ... eek! ... I love him ... up there with the original 1922 Nosferatu ... or Jack Nicholson's The Shining! :o
