The book was amazing, and I read that first. I couldn't get enough of it, or the rest of the books in the series. When I found out that this one had been made into a movie I wanted to watch it, though not without some trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it held mostly true to the book. The acting is great, the costumes are wonderful, and the story it flawless. I highly recommend it if you enjoy reading/watching stories about this time period.

While not as enjoyable as the book, the setting, history, and over the top performances make it worthy watch.

Being a history buff, there are definite flaws in the movie, however, the story is great and the acting superb. Definitely worth a watch.

If you're interested in Henry VIII then you might want to try the cable series The Tudors. Natalie Dormer is much more convincing as Anne Boleyn than Natalie Portman. Scarlette Johansen somehow can't pull off the period piece. She just looks too modern and doesn't qualify as a Tudor.
Everything here is pretty. But nothing is really convincing. We get the idea that the Boleyns were an ambitious family. Dad and Uncle were really bad guys. And Anne was just a plain shrew. Who would hurt anyone for her own benefit. But it isn't convincing here. It's not real here. And Momma Boleyn just is too modern in her concerns. A good actress here, but the writing just isn't period.
The extras on the DVD are almost inaccessible. Someone got fancy with their set up. It's way too late to be making that kind of mistake with a Blu-ray disc.
All in all, go buy the first season of The Tudors. You'll be more entertained and learn more about British history and be more immersed.

This film is aboslutely wonderful. In some ways, it's a loose adaptation of Gregory's novel, but it captures the overall spirit and excitement of this mock-historic tale. The cinematography is done beautifully and really enhances the experience of watching the movie. No one could have portrayed the cold-hearted Anne Boleyn better than Natalie Portman achieved, and Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana do a decent job portraying their roles, although Johansson's overly innocent depiction of Mary lacks something deeper.
Make sure you watch the movie before you read the novel so you won't be disappointed by the lack of a romance between Mary and William Stafford.

This movie was full of intrigue and family drama. It kept one interested and wanting more. I could see myself yelling at the screen from time to time because of the turns the movie was taking. What made this all the better was the fact that this was a true story for the most part.

Natalie Portman & Scarlett Johansson are two of the most beautiful and most talented actresses today. Their teaming as sisters Anne and Mary Boleyn sounded inspired on paper. However, they don't quite have the energy to make such a dramatic teaming pay off, although they give it their best shot.
Likewise, Eric Bana fails to bring authority to his role of Henry VIII the way Robert Shaw or Charles Laughton did.
Kristen Scott Thomas, however, is first rate as Anne & Mary's mother, who is displeased by how her girls, and women in general, as treated in this time period, even if she reluctantly agrees to go along with it.
The art direction and costumes are also great. However, this film doesn't hold a candle to A Man for All Seasons.
