David Coverdale originally wanted to reteam with Ritchie Blackmore to revisit his Deep Purple era contributions with Jon Lord. Sadly Jon Lord passed away before they could get things off the ground. Coverdale decided to move forward with his 'Snake chaps to revisit the material anyway. The Whitesnake interpretations are simply splendid. Nothing will capture the time Coverdale spent with Deep Purple but this is a great tip of the hat to that era. As Coverdale says of the material: “There was absolutely no intention to compete, or compare with the original recordings. We just wanted to play these songs the best we could and this is how we wanted to play them“. Amen to that. Fear not: "The Purple Album" is an excellent record. David Coverdale has taken songs he sang early in his career with Deep Purple and changed them to fit the Whitesnake sound and the results are great. Yes the songs sound different to the originals, but surely that’s the point – to mix the familiar with Whitesnake's modern hard rock sound, rather than just doing a slavish copy. It’s great to hear these classic songs being given a new lease of life. Long live to the White Serpent.

I have to be honest, Deep Purple was a little before my time. That said, having followed Whitesnake since the very early 80s I also know that they have covered some of Coverdale's Purple songs in the past, both live and on some studio albums. This project is a combination of songs from the three Deep Purple albums that Coverdale appeared on. The songs that have been played live on previous tours are pretty solid offerings (Burn, Stormbringer, Mistreated, Take Me With You, etc.). Some of the other songs that Coverdale used to fill out this album can vary. Soldier of Fortune is a great ballad and this version is different enough to warrant an opinion over the original. Many of the other tracks have a heavy keyboard input and I have to say that for me to enjoy keyboards in rock tracks the song has to be strong enough to carry them. Some of these tracks still have the jury out in that respect. A solid enough offering for 'Snake fans both young and old alike.

    Whitesnake spin on Deep Purple

As a life long fan of Deep Purple the new spin at first listen made me miss Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice. However, these original recordings were done from 1973-1975 a different time entirely. This album is Whitesnake. David Coverdale sang them then for Purple and now for Whitesnake. Definitely a different take on them but if you truly love these songs and Dave's passionate voice as I do you will love this album. Sail away was my favorite song for years when I was a kid and though this version is different it is a new favorite. I would recommend this album to any fan of Deep Purple, Whitesnake, metal, hard rock...GOOD MUSIC

A Good Intro To Vintage Purple

Whitesnake's latest release is being met with some harsh criticism from long time Deep Purple fans who find it sacrilegious that Mr. Coverdale and his band would dare cover the very songs he wrote and performed over 30 years ago. I find these versions to be quite enjoyable myself and while they won't match the intensity or power of the originals, this album makes for a great introduction to younger fans who may not be familiar with Deep Purple's mid-period albums which these songs are culled from. Aside from a handful, I myself was not familiar with most of the songs covered here. So to me, it's like a whole new album of Whitesnake tunes and I'm just fine with that.

I didn't know a lot of these songs before, but they are great! I'm a big David Coverdale fan and I love the versions of these old songs. The band is outstanding and the guitar playing is off the charts! Tommy Aldridge is a welcome addition to the current version of Whitesnake and was sorely missed. All in all a great old school classic rock and blues album.

I like the songs selection for this album. David and his band gave their own touch to the songs. I like more the original tunes but like I mentioned, the band gave their own touch or other way to perform the songs. Great tribute to John Lord. Really sad that Ritchie Blackmore did not participate in this album. That was the original idea about the tribute to John Lord. Really good album.

I am a big fan of the original Deep Purple incarnations, as well as the Whitesnake incarnations through the years. Coverdale and Co.'s re-visiting and tweaking some great DP songs from his heyday with the band work well. Sail Away is a favorite, but the whole album is a great tribute to the musicians past and present.

I love this band and they have outdone themselves on this redo of Deep Purple's Burn album. It has a fresh take on some classic music of the 70's. I also saw them do some of this album live in concert and it sounded just like the Album. Great recording for those new to Whitesnake and long time fans.

The Deep Purple reworks on this cd are definitely worth listening to and having in your cd collection. I was somewhat disappointed with the 4 music videos on the second cd in the set. Was hoping for all 15 of the Deep Purple remakes on the dvd and would have preferred to see them being performed in concert by Whitesnake as opposed to in their studio.

People complain that David Coverdale doesn't have the voice he once did but he sounds amazing on this album. It's interesting to hear some of these songs without Glenn Hughes but he does them justice. I loved hearing David sing Holy Man. If you're a fan of Whitesnake and Coverdale-era Deep Purple, this is a great album to pick up.

Well done modern take on the music that made Coverdale famous before starting Whitesnake. The music sounds fresh and new. A must for Whitesnake fans that don't know Dave replaced Ian Gillan in Deep Purple. BURN baby!

Originally conceived as a John Lord tribute - would have been better had Richie Blackmore not backed out of the project; Sound quality suffers for compression, but moments of brilliance - Sail Away and Soldier of Fortune are great; Coverdale's voice not what it used to be - he could have used Glenn Hughes help at times.

Joel Hoekstra and the return of Tommy Aldridge make this a great tribute to David Coverdale's time in Deep Purple. Great updates of old favorites such as Burn and Stormbringer. Reb Beach's guitar playing also highlights the set. Recommended to fans of classic rock with a shot of testosterone.

David Coverdale & new band leader Reb Beach absolutely tear through this set of Deep Purple classics from Coverdale's days with the band! This record is loud and proves the band is still in top form. It's also good to see long-time member Tommy Aldridge back in his drum seat!

I put the CD in my car stereo and kept it there for three weeks solid. Great to hear David Coverdale belting them out again. Some really good sounding guitar, which seems to be getting rarer these days.

What a great album done by a band in which its lead singer was a member of the band it is playing tribute. The sound is great and the songs are done in taste.
