The Resistance: Record Of The Decade?

Wow! I was very excited when this leaked on the interwebs, I got it and have not been able to stop listening to it! I'll go through a track-by-track review. 1. Uprising - Great opener. Really gets you going. Good choice for the first single. Very dancy with a good beat, wow bassline, and amazing guitar solo. 2. Resistance - Very surprised by this one. The lyrics are teriffic and the chorus is quite catchy. The piano is also a welcome addition. This was one I was looking forward to since no one else seemed to like the 30 second preview of it on iTunes. Such a great song. 3. Undisclosed Desires - THE most stand-out track on the record. Very Depeche Mode. On paper, it doesn't seem like a good idea, but believe me, it works! Could possibly be the most memorable track. 4. United States Of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage) - Very mellow start, but it then explodes into a Queen-esque note. The Prince Of Arabia inspired bridge is amazing! It fits so well with the rest of the song. Another stand-out on the record. The interlude, Collateral Damage, is a mix of Bellamy's own arrangement and a Chopin piece. A very beautiful way to end the song. 5. Guiding Light - The only one I'm iffy about. Very 80's and cheesey, but you somehow manage to look past that and appreciate the music. It's okay, not as good as Invincible from BHAR, but a decent song. 6. Unnatural Selection - Now we start to get into the heavy side of The Resistance. Phantom Of The Opera organ intro, followed by a deafening riff. The remainder of the song changes dramatically throughout. The bridge is very calm and relaxed, but then it kicks back into an all-out war and ends with the most heavy riff Muse have created. 7. MK ULTRA - In my opinion, the best song on the record! The intro is amazing. With a spider-like guitar/synth riff, it's hard to forget it. The drums are also unbelieveable. When the chorus begins, you can feel the emotion behind Bellamy's words. Then we slow down a bit for heavy drops, and go into a nasty little riff that's sure to make you shudder! The outro defines the entire song. That nasty riff I was talking about comes back for the most memorable ending on the record! Simply amazing! 8. I Belong To You (+Mon Cœur S'ouvre à Ta Voix) - Another piano driven track that has some "Ummph" to it. Very good song. The French interlude is something Muse has never done, but they do it well. Put in the bass clairinet solo and it makes this track all the better. Another stand-out on the record. 9. Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 (Overture) - Now it's time for the "symphonic monster"! The beginning is beautiful and relaxing. Then the arpeggiated string section comes in and it's nothing short of "WOW!" Full on falsetto throught and it's welcomed greatly. 10. Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 (Cross-Pollination) - Here we see Bellamy's piano skill being put to good use. His hands are everywhere at the start. At about 2:00 into the song, the guitar and drums come in with amazing force and remain till the soft piano outro into... 11. Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemptiopn) - This was the only part of the symphony that disappointed me. I was hoping for more epicness but it never came. The star is mellow, but it keeps building up and up into very beautiful chorus where Bellamy and Wolstenholme share vocals. The end is laced with more beautiful piano and strings. It ends with you wishing for more. So that's it, if there had to be one word to describe this record, it would be "BEAUTIFUL" It's nothing like any of their previous material and is perhaps their best to date. It's very experimental but in all the right ways. Go buy The Resistance, hold the greatest record of the new millenium in your hands NOW! 5/5

Without going into too much detail as some of my compadres here already have... Muse is potentially the absolute top of the music mountain at this point in history. I obtained a copy of their latest last week and have listened to it continuously, finally putting aside some of the previous releases for a while and immersing myself in the new greatness. I'm sure Absolution is happy to get a little break... but this album is basically flawless. Absolutely incredible from start to finish, I can't wait to support them and buy this gem tomorrow and put in on permanent loop for the foreseeable future. This is a MUST for anyone who respects high end music. These guys are clearly at the top of their game and The Resistance is proof positive of their meteoric rise and success over the past several years.

Everything the last guy just mentioned in his review is nothing but the truth. Even if you've been able to obtain an illegal copy of this album and have been enjoying it, BUY THIS CD to support a great group of musical artists. These guys have managed to blend classical piano, Queen-ish harmonics, hard rock, and post-punk 80's alternative into one gorgeous sounding album. Lyrics are on point and I have absolutely nothing bad to say. BUY THIS.

Even though I was able to get this disc via alternate sources, it was so good that I had to go out and purchase it. I've done the same thing with every MUSE album. This band is so great, and put out such quality product, that I'm compelled to make sure they receive their due. I can't say the same about many of the other cd's I've purchased over the years.

Every album has been a progession of the collective talents of Muse. This one spotlights the genius of Matthew Bellamy. Only the gods could bring these three together to give us music that will one day be considered classic. Thanks you guys!!!!
