The 4K version of this classic psychological horror is in a word, decent. The picture quality is solid if not unspectacular, the contrast is above average, but not reference worthy, and the punchiness of the surround sound was a bit lacking. Yes, this is an older film, but read my review of Rebel without a Cause, and you'll read that age of a film can still bear fruit when it comes to technical details. This is a fine enough reproduction, but let's not forget, this is one of the finer horror movies that only seems to get better with age, and this is one of the best renderings we have.

This review is simply for the disc as you are probably already aware of the movie plot. The 4K HDR Dolby Vision image is simply stunning, especially for a catalog title. The colors pop, the detail is clean and sharp. The sound is standard 5.1 DTS-HD MA which sounds good, but 4K users really prefer their DTS:X or Dolby Atmos. No such luck here. If you are a fan of "The Shining," and you have a 4K TV capable of Dolby Vision, definitely get this! NOTE: The 4K HDR10 streaming through VUDU looks about 95% as good as the disc. Some scenes aren't as crisp, and some scenes are grainier.

The shining is definitely a classic and if you like this movie you’ll love this Steelbook version. The picture quality is perfect and is everything you can ask for from an older movie. The sound is perfect as well. As for the steelbook art I love the back of the movie, and the front cover captures one of the most iconic scenes in the movie as well. It’s a beautiful addition to your collection and I got it at a great price. I’m extremely happy with my purchase. If you don’t have The Shining, or if you have it and it’s not a steelbook, you should definitely pick this up today because it’s a top notch product.

Despite a few reservations about the slightly incorrect aspect ratio, lack of original mono soundtrack and trailer, this remastered version of The Shining is beautifully done and well worth the upgrade of the 4K format. The transfer could scarcely be improved upon, and the repurposed 5.1 sound is clear and immersive when needed. The SteelBook is to my taste much more pleasing than the standard slipcase cover, though I'm not in any way an avid collector of the metal casings. Recommended for genre fans, and a treat for Kubrick aficionados.

Classic Horror flick that I wanted to have in my collection. I don't watch or own a lot of these type of thriller movies, but this is a classic edge of your seat movie.

Stanley Kubrick was one Of the most evocative directors of the modern age and The Shining is without a doubt one of his greatest masterpieces. Seeing this film upgraded to crystal clear 4K with enhanced sound is like a completely new experience. Boasting a slew of new special features, this set is worth every cent to add to your collection if you’re a true film fan. You also receive a free digital redemption code. This is definitely a 4K Upgrade you NEED to add to your collection.

Nicholson is unbelievable in this role, probably his best performance ever. Scenes linger for long creating a very creepy atmosphere. Every actor is top notch but Danny Llyod delivers one of the great child actor performances. The score is haunting and memorable. Also needless to say but Kubrick's direction is masterful. I prefer the 2 hour European cut to the 2 and half hour American version because it is almost completely set in The Overlook Hotel and feels more claustrophobic.

An all time classic. I never tire of watching this movie. The cinematography in itself is worth watching The Shining. All the performances, wow!. When I Watched it again in this new 4K transfer I got some goosebumps. That opening scene flying over the mountains is both creepy and breathtaking. That music is so effective and unsettling. What can I say, this 4K transfer is a darling. So much improvement in picture quality over the 1080, and the 1080 is a good transfer. Get it folks!.

Picked this up since the steelbook caught my eye, and I'm floored with this set. The artwork really invokes Kubrick's style in a way the other releases of this 4K remaster don't quite match. The 4K quality of the movie itself is incredible though, it really goes to show how timeless the look of this movie is, it truly felt like a modern cinema experience at most times. Really glad the digital code was an option, too. No complaints here.

I had read that the 4K version was a must see but still didn't anticipate much. This was the most clean, crisp and clear 4K disc I own. The sound is phenomenal. Seeing the movie nearly 40 years after its release, the acting (especially Shelley Duvall) is not nearly as good as I thought it was in high school. I can see what Stephen King didn't like about the film at this stage in life. But man ... it's beautiful to look at!

As a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, the 5.1 audio and special features may come directly from the previous Blu-ray, but both the 4K HDR and HD SDR video transfers are based on a new 4K restoration that absolutely murders all previous releases. If you're a fan of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and own a large display, this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is Must Own. Even if you don't own a 4K TV, pick this one up for the new Blu-ray transfer.

The five stars are a review for the product, not the film, (although if I were reviewing the film, it would also get five stars). Suffice to say, the definition of the presentation here is beyond what I imagined was possible for a film of its age, and in the words of Han Solo, “I can imagine a lot”. If you have a 4K setup, there is absolutely no cause for further consideration or debate; purchase this item immediately.

Was really excited to hear this was coming out, and I knew I had to have it. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. This 4k version does not disappoint, and any fan should see this as a necessity. As soon as I got it, I watched it with my niece, to bring Kubrick's visionary film to a new generation. She loved it, just as I knew she would. Even if you've never seen, do yourself a favor and watch this 4k version.

The Shining is one of my all time favorite movies and my #1 all time favorite horror movie. Stanley Kubrick was a genius that knew exactly what elements of Stephen Kings novel would translate well on the screen and what wouldn't. The exclusive steel book is beautiful as is this new 4k transfer. The movie has never looked better. If you're a fan of the film this is a must have for your collection.

Kubrick’s take on the Stephen King novel will always stand tall in the hall of horror fame, despite his changes from the source material and King’s own upset over them. Highly recommend as an introduction to horror for any newcomers to the genre. The film itself is a perfect example of what happens when horror is done right, and the new transfer is the best this film has ever looked.

First time viewing this film, and was fortunate enough to pick it up on 4K steelbook which looks amazing! Love the design! Visually this films is fantastic! No CGI just straight masterpiece! Wow! Considering how long ago movie was made! Redrum! Then... the audio! The audio is wow! Made me feet curled! Phenomenal! It was my first viewing and I’ve gotta say I’m very happy!

The picture quality is an excellent upgrade from the old 2007 blu-ray release and really shines on the new 4K format. This is really the definitive way to watch this iconic horror classic, I was completely blown away by level of detail in the background which I had never seen before. A+ rating for the transfer, A+ rating for the steelbook maze design. AWESOME RELEASE!

Given this film was made and released almost 40 years ago, I had serious doubts as to what 4K transfer might do (if anything?) to improve upon the original film production. I am very pleased with what was accomplished with this outstanding reproduction of The Shining on 4K UHD. And, the bonus is one of the coolest-looking cover artwork I’ve seen yet on a SteelBook.

This is one of the best horror/ psychological thriller movies ever made. The 4k restoration of this film makes it look like a modern day film! Highly recommend

I've seen this film dozens of times on HBO, dvd, blu-ray and a screening, probably even saw it on VHS when I was child. Other than seeing the film in the theater this is superior in every way, The quality of the transfer was done with the same care that you would expect from Criterion and Shout Factory. Jack's insanity really shines through on 4K.
