This was one of the first epics of the talkies era. Cecil B. DeMille's story set in Nero's Rome has only a smattering of history, but a story of courage and willingness to sacrifice that is faithful to the spirit of many of the early Christian martyrs. Marcus Superbus, Prefect of Rome (played by Frederick March) is a young powerful Roman official who is charged with Nero's edit (played by Charles Laughton) to root out and kill Christians. He falls in love with Mercia, a young beautiful believer (played by Elissa Landi) yet cannot understand her commitment to the faith. One of the best roles is that of the Empress Poppaea (Claudette Colbert) who has her sights set on Marcus and pulls strings to try and get her way. The film include the famous (infamous) scene of the empress bathing in milk. The pre-code film was subsequently edited heavily by censors but is now restored to its original.
