Scream Factory a division of Shout factory has been releasing collectors editions of horror films for a few years now and gives us fans, movies, otherwise ignored or not featuring any special features from the main studios, tons of bonus features and remastered audio and picture. i had the original barebones the thing blu ray for awhile but when i saw they were doing this one, i was like sold. the main selling point for me was the insane amount of bonus content including new interviews, new making of segements, commentaries, outtakes, network version and more. The thing is prob the scariest movie john carpenter has directed since halloween. it is very claustrophobic as it takes place in a base camp in antartica with no escape. the atmosphere is scary, the paranioa is scary and real and the ending is perfect. highly recommended

Universal’s 4K UHD release of Carpenter’s classic, The Thing is a mixed bag depending on what the consumer deems more significant in value. In comparison, Universal’s UHD disc is a knockout. Crisp, clear, brightened, and vibrant colors with mid to high HDR makes this a visual treat. Fans might be favorable towards Universal’s new remastered DTS:X audio. It’s heavy hitting, clear distinct dialogue, and is heard through its multi channel surround setup. However, there are some drawbacks. Universal’s release noticeably omits an original 4.1 mono-mix from the 70mm six-track Dolby Stereo, a 5.1 and standard 2.0 audio options; as well as several audio commentaries (one of which, the classic Carpenter/Russell track is included on the 4K) and a load of in-depth, behind the scenes, interviews and making of features are all absent. Though, many of which were not carried over can be found on the 2016 collector’s edition release from Scream Factory, In the end, any fan would be satisfied. Whether they wish to have more original audio options or are interested in the production of the film. Regardless with how one sees, this is the best release The Thing will see. A definite upgrade over the 2008 Blu-ray release too.

Very curious about why people are getting a copy. I have not watched this movie yet and it really sparked my interest in getting a copy. Unfortunately, I tried preordering the steelbook but it was gone almost immediately. I was so surprised with the picture quality! It looks as if it was just shown just recently! Very pristine! AQ is great as well! This is considered as one of the best horror films of the 80's. Very very good! I highly recommend this!

This movie continues to stand the test of time. Movie critics and film enthusiasts agree that Kurt Russell helps make this classic about an alien that lives inside its human house one of the best horror movies of all time. So many movies tried to emulate what this movie did and failed. If it is not part of your collection now then buying this 4K version is your time to correct that and add it to your library.

It is nice to have this movie in 4K, Blu Ray, and Digital 4K. This is one of my favorite horror movies. It's older but I feel like it was done very well and to this day it is still a great movie. I would suggest this movie to any horror movie fans. I don't know whether it makes a difference having it in 4K but when I had been meaning to add this to my collection for a long time and once I saw it go on sale it was easy to decide to pick it up

I actually saw this in the theater when it first came out. I was the only one there if you can believe that. It scared the heck out of me, and I loved the film. Years later this film still holds up, and I own many copies. This is a great steelbook of a classic film. I also own the Arrow Video edition, which has more content. If you’re a fan this is a no brainer.

An 80’s classic. One of my favorite Sci Fi Horror movies. The special effects I feel hold up to this day. I saw the Steelbook available for pre order and I had to have this one and in 4K. I haven’t watched it yet to give my thoughts on the 4K transfer but the Steelbook design I’m very pleased with. If you like Sci Fi Horror this is a must have for your library.

What can i say The Thing is one of John Carpenters finest movie . If you like science fiction and horror plwase watch The Thing . The 4k remastering of this film is fantastic . The sound and picture are reference quality you wont be disappointed. Universal did a terrific job . Buy it .

I have been a big fan of this movie since it first came out. The name John Carpenter alone drew me to it. And in 4K, the details are incredible and give you a true movie-screen experience. It is a dark adventure of paranoia, comedy, fatalism and determination. The visual effects and visual style from this movie have affected every movie that has come after it.

The crème de La crème of a 4K release for an older film. Picture quality is superb of a much deserving film! Worth every penny. I watched it on a PS5 and I was stunned at the quality. As for the movie, per usual the team of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter knock it out of the park. Good stuff here! Get some popcorn and enjoy!

This is a review for the picture quality. Nothing else can be said about the film due to it already being a sci-fi horror masterpiece. The film looks like it was shot yesterday. It was incredibly pristine. Film grain is still present, but it isn't distracting. The HDR allows for incredibly bright snow scenes and intense gunfire and flamethrower effects. A definite must-buy!

The 4K Ultra HD of John Carpenter's The Thing is a must-own. Picture quality: Excellent. Sound quality: Excellent. The practical effects ooze off the screen, regardless of the size you're watching this on. If you're a fan of this one, don't pass up the opportunity to own it in this format.

I wanted this classic movie on Blu-ray for awhile and found it at Best Buy for a great price. Had it delivered, watched it, and enjoyed it!!! This collector's edition also has a few behind-the-scenes special features of footage when they were originally filming... along with discussions about the practical effects they used at the time. The HD picture quality and sound were both great for this Blu-ray edition.

I have both the original "The Thing, from another world" and John Carpenter's re-make of "The Thing". Both are based on the original magazine short story titled "Who Goes There?" Each version is excellent in presenting the basic theme of the story and each is GREAT! in it own way. Although John Carpenter's re-make tracks closer to the original story-line, it is well worth the price to have BOTH versions in your collection. Either version will scare the pajamas off you if viewed at bedtime. Be warned!

Outstanding movie! One of the top science fiction movies of all time. It is set up nicely, well acted, and lots of weird creepiness in the movie. Do give this movie a viewing. On 4K comes off very crisp and clean, a nice upgrade to original picture. Sounds are more enhanced. Very much well worth the extra bucks for the 4K version.

Classic Sci-Fi Horror from the 80s finally gets a proper bluray release by Scream Factory. It looks better than ever and is packed with plenty of great extras including a lot of vintage footage and commentaries. The Thing is truly one of John Carpenter's original classics. It's worth a watch for the excellent, early days of practical effects alone. The story takes place in a remote station in Antarctica in which the crew encounter 'something' that quickly spreads an extreme sense of paranoia.

This is one of my and my husband's favorite movies, but he couldn't find the copy he already owned. So, for Halloween I surprised him with a copy. I searched Best Buy online for it, and found it quickly. Additionally, I was surprised at how fast the DVD was ready for pickup--it was the very next day! The price was good, too, especially for a blue-ray version. Movie is a classic--very creepy, excellent drama/suspense and good special effects for its time. A must-have for one's "spooky" collection!

Adapted from the short story “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, John Carpenter brought to the big screen his best work. This film has a great setting, great cast of characters, atmosphere, creative camerawork, and some of the best horror practical effects to this day. Definitely, my top favorite horror film of all time.
