A seemingly all American nice guy has a lot of skeletons in his closet & the closer he gets to normalcy the more the veneer of his candy colored reality begins to crumble. The less you know going into The Voices the better because there are some really good nuances both in the story telling & the overall look of the movie that really drive the story forward that are too good to spoil.
Horror comedies as a whole are a mixed bag because getting the chemistry right between the two is a lot harder than it looks. The first thing The Voices gets right is in the casting of Ryan Reynolds he encapsulates every facet of this complex characters many personalities. What really works for me though is how sweet the movie can be which makes the darker elements all the more tragic but in the end The Voices never forgets that at its core its a comedy as is evident in the insane final moments during the credits.Rounding out the movie is a supporting cast of Gemma Arterton,Anna Kendrick & Jacki Weaver who all embody their roles with ease.None of these actresses are merely set dressing they are vital to the story & bring a lot to the table. The Voices really works for me from top to bottom.

Unusual, But Great Dark Indie Comedy

Its easy to be fooled by The voices going in, by looking at the cover art you may think this is just Ryan Reynolds doing his typical Ryan Reynolds comedy quick wit shtick, but that is most definitely not the case here. The Voices is a dark movie, very dark, in that you want to pull for and love the Ryan Reynolds played main character but its virtually impossible to pull for him by the end as he's too far gone to feel remorse. The character is a serial murder who due to childhood experiences is now mentally disturbed and must take medication to function day to day and the said "voices" play very heavily over the whole film and at most times stealing the various scenes in which they're featured in, all voiced by Reynolds the various voices heard from his house pets really bring the comedy thats advertised into the film in and make for a nice plot device, but nonetheless, this is a great easy to miss, under the radar movie that any Ryan Reynolds or dark comedy fan should check out as it may just surprise them as its quality is perhaps better than they'll expect.

This movie is about a guy who works at a company that makes bathtubs. He has a crush on one of his coworkers, but she is not interested in him. The main character is suffering from a mental illness that causes him to hear voices, and those voices are always willing to offer their opinion on his life. This movie paints the picture of his mental illness from two viewpoints: his and everyone else's. It makes for an interesting and entertaining film, although it is not an uplifting tale.

Ryan Reynolds actually was pretty decent!! I'm a fan of his over the top comedic timing in such films as "waiting..." and "van wilder". I half expected him to perform along those lines but was surprised that he played it more half straight, half zany. His voice over for his pet dog reminds me of Gary busy, but the film overall wasn't all that bad. I enjoyed how they took a concept such as this and gave it a new spin. Defiantly recommend giving it a watch.

Great Dark Comedy

This isn't your typical Ryan Reynolds comedy. This is much darker. Reynolds plays Jerry, an odd but very likable guy who has a crush on a coworker. He has one dog and one cat who talk to him. They almost seem to be the devil and angel on your shoulder. Unfortunate accidents keep leading him to killing people. He tries to balance his life without using his prescribed medication which just ends with disaster after disaster.

Once I realized what was going on, I had to watch this movie to its conclusion. I expected a funny movie based on a man hearing his animals talking in his head. What it is, is a very dark comedy that shows the first person insanity of psychosis. Hearing voices and following what those voices instruct him to do. Having had a sister with mental illness and realizing the real world truth to this is sobering. There are parts of this movie that are funny because of his interaction (albeit imagined ) with the dog and especially the cat. The humans he interacts with are moronic and almost spoof like falling victim to his violent actions. Watch this to see a somewhat real insight into mental illness, this has all of the flags, family history and childhood trauma. I was repulsed by some of the scenes but watched the whole film because I ultimately felt sorry for the character and wanted to see how it ended.

“I’m not sure it’s a good idea to be talking to your cat.” Jerry (Reynolds) is a likable, quiet and polite worker. He stays to himself and is pretty much limited to conversations with his pets. When he develops a crush on Fiona (Arterton) he is excited that she agrees to meet him for a date. When she doesn’t show Jerry’s true personality comes out. This is a difficult movie to recommend. I liked it and laughed some but it is very , very dark. Most comedies about murder and death are dark but Ryan Reynolds is such a likable guy that it really adds to the experience and tone of the movie. If you are not easily offended or disturbed this is one to watch, if you are I would avoid this. Overall, a funny but very dark comedy that I thought was funny, but it isn’t for everyone. I give it a B-.

This is one of the normal films released that I usually wait until the day its released on Blu-ray to bring home & watch in our home theater on a 180" screen with projector. For some reason the tuesday is was released it just wasn't worth the trip. Advertising and a funny trailer swayed me to pick this up. Well, Im glad I didn't go to the theater, The film felt like it was missing something.... Humour! I mean good funny scenes that are not forced. I expected more from Ryan Ronald's and have seen much better. Thus very well cold have been the directors image of the film rather than the actor intent. All in all I only give it 3 stars. I might watch it again in a few years when Ive forgotten most of it.... Kind of sad.

I was expecting more of a comedy about a guy who thinks his pets can talk, but this is a much darker story about a total psychotic breakdown with some humorous overtones. Amazing performance from Ryan Reynolds who not only plays his character but also supplies the voices for his pets. May not be for everyone, but I dug it.

Saw the trailer for this and knew that I was going to find it funny. I was right! Great cast and Ryan Reynolds is both creepy and funny at the same time! Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect 1 & 2) and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace & Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) are very funny! Not for kids at all..

This DVD has a bunch of bonus features that really make the film better, as a whole.
Generally, I don't enjoy musicals, but this just has a few musical elements sprinkled throughout.

This was a very good movie with underlying dark humor. Ryan Reynolds is wonderful in a performance of a conflicted yet delusional serial killer. Also the comedic performances of the victims and animals made this a movie I would see again soon.

It seems nowadays there are a lot better quality B movies out there. This is definitely one of them. It could be the freshness offered by the director (an Iranian woman) or just the change in role for RR.

This is a rather smart dark comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a socially ackward schisophenic who hears voices in the form of his pet dog and cat. The dog is supportive while the cat eggs him on to explore his dark side.
The film has an absurdist tone and handles Ryan's psychological split deftly.
Ryan shows us again that he's a far better comedian than an action hero.

This movie is a must see. It's so weird but makes it funny because of that. Ryan Reynolds did a great job acting like a mental person.
