The last time I watched The Wicker Man was in 2017 before Ari Aster’s Midsommar was released. In watching Aster’s film, it was impossible to not have The Wicker Man in mind as it progresses much the same way, ending in pyrrhic pagan victory. It was part of my disappointment with that film, finding it a far less interesting piece that traded mystery for gory mutilations and a unique unsettling tone for the “horror” of naked senior citizens. I could concede that if one hadn’t seen The Wicker Man (or was allergic to films made before Y2K) that it might be easier for Midsommar to cast its spell, but it’s hard to feel nervous about climbing up a tall ladder after you’ve BASE jumped off the Burj Khalifa.
Watching it this evening only put Midsommar even further in the rearview mirror. I don’t even attribute its success to genius on the part of Robin Hardy. There’s some real skill at the script level with Anthony Shaffer in its characterization and narrative structure but this is one of those films that really feels like lightning in a bottle. It required technicians with skill but there’s an alchemy in the unique elements poured into the making of this film that feels almost accidental.
From the moment we arrive at the island there is already a sense of feeling unmoored and adrift from the rules of common society. It’s as though the investigation itself is our only harbor because of the familiarity with police procedurals. It isn’t paganism right away but rather the hedonism, especially coming from the older set that “should know better” and a landlord who laughs raucously at the sexual objectification of his daughter; herself also greatly amused at the ribaldry.
The trap that the townspeople set for the policeman is the one the audience falls into as well and the horror we feel at the climax is the horror of realization that it was inevitable and inescapable. The blindness of zealotry and a refusal to understand a system of belief outside his own, dooms him and the truly terrifying moments are reserved for his desperate entreaties to God that, at least in temporal terms, go unanswered. No last rites. No visual representation of divine peace. Just a the screams of a man burning to death as his captors, young and old, dance joyously around him in pagan ecstasy.
The only piece that doesn’t entirely work for me is the Willow’s seduction of Howie. We’re meant to feel as though he’s struggling terribly with lust for her because of his chastity but that struggle sort of comes out of nowhere. His virginity isn’t well established, nor is his attraction to Willow. The point of greatest temptation is of course the dance of seduction but apart of some notion that “he doth protest too much” and must be therefore be consumed with lust, we don’t build to that in any meaningful way.
The dance itself is also unhelpful with the awkward slapping of walls and thighs that seems less choreographed and more improvised by a non-dancer. I would have bought it far more if Ekland had confidently stayed in bed, simply and casually knocking on the shared wall.
The Final Cut also includes a deleted sequence near the beginning where Lord Summerisle brings a young man to be deflowered by Willow. The concept of the scene works well enough to both unsettle Sergeant Howie and spur some idea of Willow’s sexual freedom, but it also dilutes the mystery of Lord Summerisle who really shouldn’t be fully introduced until Howie meets him at his mansion. If he’d stayed in shadow it might have worked but otherwise is a weak intro to a stellar character.
It’s to the strengths of the film that those pieces don’t ruin it, but are instead blips within a brilliantly constructed film. The Wicker Man is still a masterpiece of tone and it’s horrors linger in the mind like the burn spots that obscure your vision from looking too long into the sun.

Wicker Man gets a bad rap because of the 2000s remake; in acuality, the original is a important moment in horror. It essentially codified "Folk Horror", and I was hoping this release would reflect the importance of the movie. From the very first scene, you are taken on a roller coaster ride of bad image vs stellar.
The reason for this is noble, they wanted to give the extended cut, more inline with what the creatives behind the movie wanted. The problem is, which is common in movies, the cut footage is not cared for when compared to the final prints of the movie. The viewer is left with a movie that looks sub par for certain shots and stellar for others.
The saving graces of this movie are:
1. The movie itself is still amazing, despite the image flaws.
2. The packaging is one of the best steelbooks I have seen.
3. The price, at the very least, this is not a 40 dollar steel book, its priced like a conventional release.
Would I tell you to buy it right now? If you love what A24 is doing in horror, it is clear they had this movie in their minds when creating some of their releases. This movie is called the "Citizen Kane of Horror", definitely important, so give it a watch.

This masterpiece of folk horror features what Christopher Lee believed was his greatest performance. Who was Christopher Lee? If you are asking that question, you are in for a treat. He is simply the greatest actor of modernity. A commando in WW2, he released his last metal album in his 90s. He played Dracula, Saruman, fiends and saints with richness and humanity. He spoke five languages and was descended from Charlemagne.
Here he is at the height of his powers. And marry this performance with a magnificent script and one of the finest endings in the history of cinema.
"Come, it's time to keep your appointment with the Wicker Man."

Really good movie and nicely packaged. If you haven't seen this movie but like a good mystery and a good horror story (not just nonsensical violence), I definitely recommend this movie!

This is a beautiful steelbook wirh a gorgeous picture and sound. While there are many versions, here in the U.S. we get the final cut or the Director's cut of the film. The first 20 minutes or so don't look quite as good as the rest of the film simply because it had to be strategically put in to make it rhe final cut. The overall picture quality is outstanding.

The image quality of this 4K UHD was so great that it literally took my breath away. I actually gasped several times while watching it, because I never thought the film could look so good. As a result, I was more frightened and enthralled by the movie than ever before. The steelbook design is simply gorgeous as well. Get this '70s classic while you can!

Great movie! I loved the steelbook and slip case. The 4K movie itself looked good except for the inserted scenes that make the movie they extended director’s cut. Those scenes were taken from an obviously inferior print of the movie. I wish the theatrical cut was available on this release as well.
