Satoshi Kon's 3rd magnum opus is a keeper

Through his all-too-brief life and career, anime director Satoshi Kon produced indelible works that bend the mind with multiple layers and twists. This film, his third feature project, is inspired by the John Ford classic Three Godfathers, and bears the highlights of his work. In the tale, Gin, Hana, and Miyuki are three homeless people in Tokyo; one Christmas Eve, they discover an abandoned baby girl. Instead of simply turning the child over to the police, they resolve to find her parents themselves, and what results from their quest is a series of adventures and incredible coincidences, that align in a most unique way. As the trio comes closer to finding the girl's parents, they have to look back on the paths of their own lives, and resolve the events that caused them to leave society. The story is typical of Kon: Just when you think you have the action figured out, he throws a curve-ball at you that forces you to rethink what you just saw. Nothing is entirely what it appears to be, everything is related in certain strange ways, and it all works out to a certain satisfaction. This one's a keeper, not just for Kon fans or even anime fans in general, but for anyone with a love for complex stories that keep you on your toes.

Satoshi Kon's version of a Christmas special

A very non-traditional anime entry to the animated Christmas movie list. Three homeless people discover an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve, then spend the rest of the film attempting to track down the parents. Seems like a simple premise, but there are many subtle comments made during the film regarding friendships and family, but mainly forgiveness and redemption. Another amazing film from director Satoshi Kon. He is best known for his acclaimed anime films Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001), and Paprika (2006).

This is one of Satoshi Kon's finest works, and it hasn't been released in North America on Blu Ray until now. The DVD release was only in the original japanese as well, which doesn't bother me but that is something that is a dealbreaker for some so it is worth mentioning. This release includes a new english dub so what are you doing reading this? Go buy this movie today! Whoever made this release, I want Paranoia Agent on blu ray next. Please and thank you!!!

This movie is an all-time Christmas classic by the late legend Satoshi Kon. It's about 3 homeless people who find a baby in the trash and try to locate the parents. Throughout the movie, the character development for the 3 main characters is some of the best in filmmaking and no surprise that directors to this day still draw inspiration from this movie. This film holds up well in modern times much like Satoshi Kon's other movies and worth the watch.

The restoration is done really well and doesn't take any liberties with the original content. The american voice actors are amazing and are a true homage to the original japanese voice actors. If you have never seen this movie before I simply can't recommend it enough. Satoshi Kon was so far ahead of his time. His career and genius was cut to short. You should really do yourself a favor and watch this one. It really does have something for everyone. RIP Satoshi Kon

Really, I just wanted to call out how wonderful this movie is. I didn't know it was getting a Blu-ray release and impulse bought it when I saw it, I love it that much. Really heartwarming at times with a dark sense of humor and beautiful animation. It's a great Christmas movie, but you can enjoy it any time of year. Highly, highly recommend it.

So happy this movie finally gets a rerelease and in blu-ray format no less. I watched this movie once over a decade ago when I rented the DVD from Netflix (Yes it was that long ago I got the DVD in the mail). A delightful cast of characters to follow and there is something here for everyone to laugh and smile at in this Christmas adventure.

Satoshi Kon's heart-warming story about three homeless folks who stumble across an abandoned newborn and care for it while search for its parents. Very well done characterizations and empathetic back-stories. Pretty good picture quality on the BD, though it appears a bit soft. Decent amount of extras.

This is great video quality. This is how animation film should look. Not scrubbed digital tinkering mess. It looks simply clean, filmic, great details. Great story too. Fun, feel good movie. Highly recommend.
