A Lot to Like, Easy to Use The Toshiba Fire TV

A Lot to Like, Easy to Use
The Toshiba Fire TV Edition is the first television to integrate the Amazon Fire TV and Alexa Voice Remote, and it is a fantastic combination taking the next level up from a smart tv to that of interactive artificial intelligent tv. Amazon put its brand name on this television and it is apparent that they worked hard with Toshiba and Best Buy to provide a quality, well made, value oriented 4K UHD television for the consumer.
Here's what I liked about the tv:
(1) Seamless set up. After the usual attachment of the support legs, you fire up the tv, allow it to connect to your wifi network and perform its firmware updates, and you're ready to go.
(2) Multiple inputs. Three HDMI ports one of which is HDMI ARC, one optical (toslink) output, one 3.5mm audio out jack, a usb2.0 port, Ethernet connector, Antenna/Cable In, and RCA input. Plenty enough to connect both legacy and modern audio equipment.
(3) Very good, crisp and sharp picture. Out of the box, the tv had good color, saturation, contrast, and sharpness. Images are bright and vivid, skin tones are well reproduced. I was impressed with the picture quality especially at this price point.
(4) Bluetooth. I love the bluetooth feature. With bluetooth built in to the tv, you can connect game controllers, a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and best of all, your bluetooth headphones or even a bluetooth speaker. I enjoy watching television and movies late into the night and having bluetooth built in to the tv is a major plus as I can continue watching with my bluetooth headphones without disturbing my family members.
(5) Alexa Voice Remote. I came from a traditional tv with a conventional remote control which had all the numbered buttons for selecting channels. I'll admit that when I first saw the Alexa Voice Remote, I had a little bit of anxiety since it looked so minimalistic with only a few buttons, a control wheel, and a voice button. To tune into specific over-the-air channels, you'll need to press the voice button and say, for example, “Alexa turn to channel 7.1” After a week of using the remote, I can say that I'm starting to get used to the voice commands. Interacting with the tv with voice commands is a paradigm shift and I think that Amazon purposely created a remote with so few buttons so that our brains can be re-trained to do everything with our voices. The Alexa Voice Remote is basically the Amazon Alexa that we all know and love, only now its built into the television and not simply into a speaker like an Echo. You can do so much with it. Tell it to switch inputs by saying “Alexa, switch to HDMI 1” or “Alexa switch to composite”. Turn the volume up by saying “Alexa increase the volume”
(6) It's not just a television anymore. With the built-in Fire TV, you can download and run apps such as games. I downloaded a simple game such as CrossyRoad and it was just mesmerizing seeing my kids playing it on a big screen tv and not some 5” smart phone screen. The tv is also now an internet browser. Download the Amazon Silk browser and Firefox browser and you have the internet on you tv. Download a music app like Pandora and stream music via wifi (without the bluetooth compression) through your television or connected soundbar. You get the picture...The possibilities are endless.
(7) USB port isn't only for storage. Yes, you can attach a memory stick for storage or view photos. But just for kicks and giggles I attached a usb receiver into the usb port in the tv, and it instantly recognized my wireless keyboard and mouse.
I couldn't think of anything significant that I disliked about the television. This isn't a perfect television, it's just that it has all the features that fit my needs as an average consumer.
Oftentimes with televisions, you'll hear the usual complaints that the audio from the built-in speakers sound like they're coming out of tin cans. However, I didn't find that to be the case with the Toshiba Fire TV. The audio from the internal speakers didn't sound bad, but it didn't sound great either. Turn off the surround sound feature and the built in speakers are tolerable. Voices and dialogue are clear.
Here's my two cents on how to get the most out of this television.
(1) Create a Favorites List of over-the-air (ota) channels. I live in a large metropolitan area where I receive over a hundred ota stations, most of which I never watch. I only watch a dozen or so large network stations such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and others. If you go into one of the settings menus on the tv, you can quickly create a favorite list of the ota channels you typically watch. This way, instead of using voice commands to tell Alexa to change the channels, you can simply use the control wheel of the Alexa Voice Remote and quickly scroll through your favorite channel list instead of the one hundred plus frivolous channels. In this way, the remote acts more like a conventional remote with the familiar channel up and channel down keys.
(2) Use the RECENT ROW feature. Everytime you power on the television, by factory default, the television will display the Amazon Prime screen with the latest Amazon Prime programming and apps. Instead of this you may wish to power on the television to display the last television station you were watching or function (e.g. HDMI) you were using right before you turned off the television. This is where the RECENT ROW comes in handy. It allows you to do just that. It's located in the Display & Sounds sub-menu in Settings.
(3) To experience the best picture quality in the Toshiba Fire TV, you'll need to pair it with some 4K content. Find some 4K content to stream or purchase a 4K UHD Blu Ray player and some 4K movies to watch. The 4K quality is amazing. The Toshiba Fire TV lists the television as HDR. I'm assuming here that it is HDR 10. Would have been great if it was Dolby Vision, but that would have increased the price of the tv due to the licensing fee.
(4) Even though this is an Amazon Fire TV, you're not limited to viewing only Amazon Fire TV content. Remember you have three available HDMI ports. You can always stick a Google Chromecast in there and watch content that isn't available on Amazon Fire TV (think YouTube). That's what I did.
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this television to those who are already subscribed to the Amazon Prime and Fire TV ecosystem. The price is competitive and the television offers good value in the sense that it has a lot of features, input, and has very good picture quality.

I purchased this TV during a promotion that Amazon was running with Best Buy. You buy the TV for $199 (already a smoking deal), and you get a free Amazon echo dot device included. As if the TV wasn't already a good enough deal, you get a free Amazon echo dot device to add to one of your rooms.
I have owned many TVs from the CRT era, the plasma era, and throughout the LCD era. It has been an interesting transition from the LCD TV to the LED LCD TV, the 3D TVs, and now the craze with the 4K TVs. There is usually about four to five classes of LED TVs and then there's usually two to three classes of OLED TVs.
You would think this TV would be in the higher level of the standard class LED TVs. The quality, when compared to the price point is just unbeatable. You pair that with an amazing Smart TV system known as the Fire TV edition from Amazon, and you have one incredible value package that cannot be beat by anyone else at the moment.
Currently there are two offerings for Fire TV edition from Best Buy. You had can have the Insignia (Best Buy house brand) in multiple sizes and resolutions, or you can take the Toshiba TVs with the same selections. I have owned both and both are good in my opinion.
What you are mainly getting with these TVs is value and content. You're getting a lot of TV, and you're getting a lot of smart TV for the money. The voice enabled remote control is a feature normally found on much higher-end TV's.
The fact that you can also control your smart home with the built-in Alexa is downright crazy for the price. take advantage of the promotion going on right now and go out and get this TV and whatever size suits the empty room you're trying to upgrade or put a TV in. Don't hesitate any further, just go by this TV right now.

4k All The Way!

I needed a television for a bedroom so I began my search thinking of possibly going for a 1080p model, but found the prices are not that different for 4k televisions and being the future for TVs is 4k and above why not get a taste of the future?
TV prices have really dropped in the past few years (thankfully) and there is a large selection of TVs to choose from. I research online before making any purchase. rtings.com is a great place to start one's research, but there are plenty other resources. Samsung, Sony and LG seem to get the best ratings, but I saw this Toshiba TV at Best Buy at a great price, so I did some research, read quite a number of reviews and it sounded pretty good so I took a chance and purchased it at Best Buy.
I was a bit apprehensive about this TV's FireTV interface after reading some reviews, but I got used to it quickly and actually like it quite a bit with all the available apps. The TV will connect to most Alexa devices and you can control it by voice through an Alexa device such as the Echo Dot! Yes, "Alexa, turn on FireTV" and the TV turns on, "Alexa, change FireTV to hdmi #2", she'll open apps also. The one thing she can't do is control the apps once you are in them - if she could do that, it would be FANTASTIC!!!
The picture is crystal clear. You can look up calibration settings online to make it even clearer. (I believe the 49" model may have even more adjustable settings than the 43" model). I've viewed 4k content from Amazon Prime and upscaled from a Blu-ray player and it is super clear. You do not need 4k content to use this TV as any resolution will look very good as well. The TV will auto adjust its resolution to the content's resolution. There is toll free customer support through Amazon which I used when I wasn't receiving a 4k picture when I should have. (it will display the resolution you are viewing a picture at in the lower left corner with some streamed services). To stream 4k, you must have broadband Internet of I believe around 10 Mbps. It turned out that my issue seemed to be caused by needed buffering at the start of a streamed movie - so it started out 1080p, but then changed to 4k in about a minute.
The television appears wider and less tall relative to other televisions I've seen and it actually provides a nice viewing experience. I like the TV a lot. Sound is OK, but for the movie experience add a soundbar with subwoofer and you'll be good to go. Get it and enjoy.

This is a no frills tv. It has a good interface, Fire tv. You can install many apps, including the basics like Netflix. It has currently retired my roku 3 since all the apps are in this tv and in 4K. I didn't see any indication of HDR enabled in the box, however some shows in netflix do show HDR in their description, however when launching the show, there is no way to know if HDR is really working as there is no visual indicator in the tv.
There are some quirks in the interface, in example, you can only see the video info when you just switched to the input, you can press the 3 lines button and it will tell you the resolution, the audio format and just that. If you wait until later, it will not work and will not display it. Other quirk is you cannot change your picture settings once you are viewing your program, you have to all the way out to main menu, then select the input and then you can change your picture settings. Hopefully this can improved in future firmware updates. Other than that, the 4k picture is great, hdmi ports are indeed 2.0. Great little tv for the price, I now have 4k on my kitchen!

Hi,
Thank you very much for your review of our Toshiba Amazon Fire TV Edition TV. Following up on your comments around how to check if HDR content is playing - While playing HDMI or streaming content, press and hold the Home button on the remote and then select "Info" on the overlay menu. This will show program information including "HDR" if the content is HDR enabled.
This method also can be used to quickly access Picture, Sound, and other settings too while watching content.

Pretty good picture, equals other brands, I like the ease of controls and how they are set up, it came with Alexa but I think it's just as easy to do what I want with the remote. Pretty good speakers for a TV, I don't think I'll buy a sound bar for it because I use it in a bedroom and its plenty loud enough. The things I dont like....i don't like how the cable TV connection is pointed downward, it was difficult to connect the cable. It came with Amazon Fire and my other Tv's have Roku, I think Roku is better because you have more apps to download in my opinion but I do like that this TV will connect to Sony so I can use my PS4 account, Roku doesn't. All in all I think it is a great TV for the price, I have had it for a couple months now and have had zero issues with it.

I am so pleased with this TV which was purchased for my bedroom that Im selling my much more expensive livingroom TV and buying another Toshiba. It has so many more options than my big name very expensive livingroom TV, the volume is much louder so I dont need a soundbar, the picture is very nice, lots of easy to use apps, voice control remote that anyone can use vs having to program each voice and if you arent programmed you cant use that option. I still havent figured out how to do that on the livingroom TV that cost over $2000!! I dont usually write reviews but in this case I had to make an exception. Toshiba has themselves a new happy customer!!

This is a very reasonably priced 4K Smart TV. We looked around a lot for just any 4K TV, and this was a better price than a lot of the non-Smart TVs. We never cared about having a Smart TV before, but now that we got this one, we love it. The quality of the picture is very good. The Smart controls are a little weird to get used to at first for a newbie, but once you do, it is great. A huge plus is that this TV must have a great tuner built into it because, even though we have a good antenna hooked up in our house for local stations, none of the TVs got very many channels including never getting ABC. This TV not only gets all three major networks, but also a ton of other channels. I think it picked up a good 30 to 40 channels, and we did not change our antenna. The one drawback is that the Alexa talking to the remote doesn't seem to work very often. When you tell it to play a movie from Netflix or Sling, it always defaults back to looking for it on Amazon, which is the only real negative I have noticed (otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars, but it is really close to 5 stars even with that hiccup). Overall, a great deal, and we are so happy we got it.

Only dislike is no YouTube app. But Alexa is amazing. Quality is great. Size is amazing for my room. Price was great ($249) I was going to pay $130-$150 for a 32 inch and a customer had on each of these and suggested it to me, I was hesitate at first, but I'm actually glad I spent the extra hundred. Because it's a great buy. I love Best Buy for their deals. And I shopped around, for months, and Best Buy had the better deal.

Bought this because I was looking for a secondary 4K TV for my Xbox and you couldn’t beat the price. Had it for a month now and so far everything has worked perfect. The picture is great and the fire tv system works as you’d expect. I’m by no means a tv expert but I do have 6 or 7 tv’s in our apartment ranging from 32-70” so I get regular use out of a variety of screens and I’m definitely a fan of this one it’s worked great for my Xbox. I don’t know/care much about how serious a performer this is in the 4K resolution department, I just know it looks pretty dang good to my eyes hah. Haven’t noticed any issues loading apps or hiccups once they’re running. This TV is completely based on the Fire TV software so it was a little weird switching my TV inputs from the Fire TV home screen instead of the traditional method but I got used to it after a few days. So, if you aren’t familiar with this type of tv, when you turn it on, it automatically loads up into the Fire TV home screen. There is no black screen waiting on an input and it doesn’t load up right into the last input you used. There may be a way to set it up that way but I haven’t bothered trying. So when I turn it on, it doesn’t automatically have my cable TV on. I have to select the input icon for my cable or Xbox for it to switch over after it’s on.

To change the TV to power up directly to the last input setting, press the Home button on your remote control and select the Settings menu. Then select the Display & Sounds menu and change the Power On setting to Last Input. With this new setting, the TV will power up to the last input that was watched.

This was the least expensive 4K TV I've seen in a while, and it is fan-freakin-tastic. Great picture (4K of course) and the sound is rather impressive. This TV is for the bedroom, and it's loud enough so no soundbar needed. Very happy with this purchase, especially for the price!
I love the Netflix button. I wish I could customize the other buttons, but it's no biggie. I do have it hooked up with Amazon Alexa, but honestly, it's easier to hit the power button rather than telling Alexia to turn it on.
The only thing I don't like about this is there is a little blue light where the IR for the remote is in front. And when sleeping, that little blue light is bright! I usually have to cover it up, but I'm going to try some black tap just enough to cover the light, and hopefully not block the IR for the remote.

Love this Smart TV! It was very easy to set up and learn We are OTA (Antenna TV - no cable/satellite), and were pleasantly surprised to find that the tuner has a scrollable menu of channels, just like scrolling down a Cable TV menu of channels. We can easily switch to our Netflix or Amazon accounts, and it even does YouTube and Audible right onscreen Fabulous!
There is only one thing that I wish it had that it doesn't... and that is not a big deal: The TV does not list the OTA channel numbers. It lists all channels alphabetically by their names (E.g. CBS, ABC, Light, PBS, Create, etc.).. Although you can see the channel numbers when programming your favorite channels, I had to get used to the naming conventions when trying to find my favorite programs.
Other things we like - It has two types of menus, the scrollable one I mentioned above, and a bottom of the screen, horizontal scroll with a picture as to what is on now on each station. Also, the "next program up" is shown in the horizontal scroll description (and also on the main scroll). The TV has voice commands to easily let you find a program.
Due to the lack of channel numbers, there are no numbers on the remote, which is not a problem... just different.
I guess I forgot to mention the picture is sharp. We have it mounted over a fireplace on a pivoting bracket. It is clear from all angles. Sound quality is also great.
Overall... I am very pleased!

The picture on this set is outstanding, crystal clear and rich, vibrant colors. The connections provided are generous with three HDMI inputs and composite video. However, there is a USB input included but no explanation what it is for. It has voice input but I don't use it; It seems an unnecessary gimmick. My biggest complaint is the lack of a printed manual which makes learning the many features a time consuming and frustrating experience. For such complex features the remote has very few buttons resulting in a lot of clicking to get anywhere. The remote has four buttons dedicated to selecting HBO, Prime Video, Netflix, and Vue. It would have been a better use of remote real estate to provide buttons for more frequently used functions. For example, it takes five clicks to get from the home screen to the settings screen, then two more clicks to get to the inputs screen and another five clicks to select composite video, a total of twelve clicks. There are many other operations which require a lot of clicking through a maze of screens. This is the result of inferior software. Great picture though!

Bought this TV for my girlfriend since she found my 32" TV too small for her liking. Happened to see that it was on sale the same day she complained and since we already have and use Fire TV, decided to take a chance, purchasing on the Best Buy website. Easy to assemble and setup, I had her watching 4K videos within 20 minutes of bringing the TV home. Just logged in to my Amazon account and boom, there were all our apps and favorites. Attached a small flat antenna, hanging at the top of a window and was blown away by the depth and richness of the OTA picture. Excellent tuner picks up weaker stations that my Tablo can't. The sound quality of the speakers is as good or better than the soundbar we were using with my 32". The built in guide is easy to navigate and includes channels from our Philo subscription. In my opinion the included Remote is actually easier to use than my other Fire TV remote due to better placement of the buttons. This Toshiba 4K UHD TV is an excellent way to enter the UHD world and I would recommend this to everyone in search of a 4K TV.

Having read other reviews, I need to say this first: You CAN set the TV to turn on to just TV (rather than having to start with the Home/Menu screen and then selecting cable).
At the top of the home screen, scroll all the way to the right and select "Settings". Scroll to "Display & Sounds". Scroll down to "Power On" and select "Last Input".
With that set, once you select Cable (or whatever your TV source is) and turn off the TV, the next time you turn it on, it will go straight to cable.
The other much mentioned item is the remote. Yes, it's unusual. If you have a universal remote for your cable (or whatever), it doesn't matter. Once you set it up, you'll never need to use the provided remote. If you wanted, you could get any universal remote to use in place of the remote provided.
Having cleared those two things up ... The TV is outstanding in every respect - Picture quality, Sound Quality, Ease of use. For the price, you'd be hard pressed to find a better choice.

This is my very first smart TV so im still learning how to use all the features on it, however, with it being a fire tv its very simple to learn and easy. The options are just unreal its basically a just like having my laptop on a larger screen!! As far as speed its lightning fast , I never get any buffering when watching a movie like u do when ur steaming on a tablet or laptop unless u have a very high quality laptop like I do. Being a vision and handicapped person, it was purchased for my bedroom. Best investment I ever made and it wasn't much at all since it was on sale ! I was shocked and pleasantly surprised once I got it up and running I never expected this type of high quality at such a low price and its the first Toshiba product I ever owned too, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone without any reservations. :)

Can you buy a better TV? Yes.
Can you buy a better value in a TV? Maybe not.
I’ve been impressed enough with this set that I just purchased my second one in 6 months.
Overall, this set is a great value. A quality picture that can deliver 4K. Excellent out of the box sound without adding on speakers. Convenience and functionality of FireTV built in.
Bought the first one about 4 or 5 months ago for a home office application. It gets used daily and has been rock solid with Zero issues.
Just bought the same set to replace a broken one in a guest room. It was $50 less than when I bought it before, talk about a value!
If you need a set at a good value don’t hesitate with this one.
