The first unit I bought was bad out of the box. The replacement drive works great. It's electronics, so there will always be a bad out of the box issue with every brand. The hard drive runs quiet, doesn't get hot, and transfers files quickly with the USB 2.0 speed. This item was plug n play all the way. You can use it straight out of the box as a hard drive and move files around manually, or you can install the included software and automate your backups. This unit powers directly through the USB port, so you only have the one cord to deal with. I bought mine through Bestbuy.com and selected local pickup, so I got 500gb storage for $99. - a great value. Overlooking the initial out of box failure, my experience with this Toshiba hard drive has been great. No regrets.

"I began purchasing portable external hard drives a few years ago and stumbled upon the Toshiba line shortly after they came out. I put movies and music on mine and use them for travelling. They have been everywhere with me, and have withstood the rigors of travel very well. Toshiba drives have an anti-shock technology which prevent damage if the drive is subjected to a sudden shock. The "read" arm immediately returns to its resting location if the drive encounters a bump so as not to destroy the drive itself. While you would not want to bump or shock the drive unnecessarily. the Toshiba drives have turned out to be quite durable over the years. I have Toshiba, Seagate and WD portables. I lke all of them for different reasons,. but I will always favor the Toshiba drives, and if given a choice, these drives are the ones I would always opt for first. Toshiba makes AWESOME products, anyway. In my opinion,. their laptops are second to none, as well. (I have Toshiba and HP laptops, as well as a Macbook.)" Great for back-ups or simply taking your media files on the go. Super-thin notebooks and netbooks do not come with optical drives so brining along CDs and DVDs is not an option unless you want to drag along an external optical. Dragging around your fragile CDs and DVDs is no longer necessary as you can place the content on one of these awesome drives and you will have your media content available whenever you want while on the go. GET IT!!!!

This is a great item to have if you want to back up your data for safe storage. I just bought this today and I was a bit skeptical about the quality of the item, but after I tested it out I realized how great this item really is. It is nice and small for portability and it stays cool even after an hour straight of backing up data. The usb that comes with the external was really short so i didn't like that but you can use any usb 2.0 wire. Overall this is a must have item and you will not regret buying it.

I got this drive because I was running out of space on my internal drive from movies. Transfered all of them to here, now I got all my space back. It is perfect for taking with my Toshiba Satellite laptop anywhere it goes. I bring it with me on plane rides and when going to relitives. And the best part is, on my Samsung LED TV, it can recognize movies on it when I plug it into the USB slots on the back of the TV so I can watch movies in 1080p, which my computer cant handle without lag. The only downside so far is that its only 5400 RPM, which decreases the experience a tiny bit, but not for people who just want something that works good for their money. Im just one of those people that need the BEST for prices. If you are looking for a simple way to increase storage or a small drive for bringing files with you this one is really a best buy ;)

Overall, the hard drive is great. Great price, lots of memory, goes very fast. However, it comes with a confusing backup program that takes up more memory on the hard drive than the files I'm saving onto it. And, the backup program is constantly running so that I can never safely remove the hard drive from my computer when I am done with it. But, the hard drive works great overall though. It would just be nice if it came with directions about how to use that backup program (or how to turn it on and off).

Good size. Newer ones are smaller but more expensive. Do not install software that is used as backing up, it is buggy. If you are going to use this drive i recommend you use windows backup tools or 3rd party software.

This has been a great accessory to load music, photos and slideshows to share with friends and family. It is small and lightweight making it easy to carry with you anywhere.

well I purchased this hard drive so I would have extra space. Great storage but totally bogs down my computer. Not sure it was worth the money,

I'm using this device for backup media storage and so far it is working great. I've used the device under both XP and 7 and the drive or drives are found immediately upon plugging the usb in. It has a light plastic shell but feels very solid. For instance, I think it could take a good fall without cracking or chipping the case, however I would be unsure of the actual security of disc inside. Basically, I would recommend not dropping it though. I already recommended this drive to a pal and he picked it up and has been a happy with it too.

I got this bad boy today and so far it works great, I plugged it in and I set it up did the little backup thingy and now my computer is way faster than it was before, speed is what I need being homeschooled and having stuff done on my computer is a must have, also I play guitar in a band so I use my computer for recording so I need speed fot that and I can even put my songs and files on here so that I know they are safe if ym computer ever crashes! I would highy recommend it to anybody!

I liked the size and ease of use. My mac recognized it immediately BUT when i tried to install the back-up software it didn't work.

Nice little external hard drive! Some of the reviews were very negative but for me, so far so good! It it used for backing up my files off of my computer (Mac) HD and transferred over 60GB of info and files in very little time....awesome!

I was able to set up the hard drive in a relatively short time. The USB cord supplied with the unit is too short and it would be nice if some type of holder was supplied. Since setting up, I've had absolutely no problems. I use it for a back up device.

I use this for business and for my self. The ease of installation was great. Plug it ion hit a few keys and ready to go. I did my research and this is better than i anticipated.

I was worried that this hard drive would fail. Since I purchased it to store pictures and music this was a concern. This hard drive was easy to install and works like a charm. I've even learned that my daughter's desire to play World of Warcraft (a HUGE game) can be met by use of this hard drive. We loaded the game on this hard drive instead of taking up the room on the primary drive and it works like a charm. I highly recommend this product. Very cheap considering how much space you get. I have to believe any negative reviews are just luck of the draw as with any product. I have zero complaints.

great item quickly compatable with Vista easily transfers information from one harddrive to another

I have used this product about two months and it has served me well. I am using it as a photo and music repository. I have my music software writing to and reading from it with no performance issues or glitches. It took some time to migrate all of my existing files. Subsequent accessing, though, has been fast.

I find this product very easy to use-not so for the cable (very small), Didn't get a readable document to read on use, and other startup guides. Time will Tell!

On the basis of all the high ratings, I bought one of these units about three months ago. I used it primarily to back up my data when I use Quicken. Today, with no warning, my computer failed to recognize this drive even though I could hear it spinning and the light was blinking normally. I have a few other computers in the house and tried the Toshiba drive on them.... same problem!! Even the Toshiba icon was gone (replaced by a generic external drive icon) on my other computers. Luckily, I back up Quicken (and other REALLY important files on a larger WD external drive.. And, luckily, too, there was nothing of major importance on the Tosh drive. So, beware of these small drives and perhaps think of using a physically larger sized drive for the long run. The small ones may be great for transporting files from home to work, etc, but my faith in this particular drive is gone..
