Awesome and easy to set up 3TB Hard drive

I had a 1TB Toshiba hard drive and filled that up and needed a new one for my new Alienware. The 3TB one was a great deal ($119.99) and was beyond easy to set up. One power cord and one to the PC and done. It has the faster USB so the backup was lightning fast and i still have over 1.5TB left to use! This is a great item for the money and I have never had any issues with Toshiba products, so now I have a new drive for my PC and my 1TB drive is now on my laptop! WIN WIN!!

    Great for the price

For what your getting, the price is most definitely right. At the time of this writing, the price for me was $129.00. A small gripe would be that it lacks a on and off switch. I leave my desktop on most the time, but I'd rather not have the backup storage using power when I'm not there at that moment. The size and shape of the drive is plain but functional. The tiny blue light that indicates activity is nice and small, not blindingly bright like other external drive I've encountered. A nice little touch is adding small rubber feet to two sides of the shell to imply that you can easily lay it vertically or horizontally. Added bonus to said feet, keeps the drive quiet on almost any surface. It still being a mechanical drive inside, spin ups are the only whispers you'll hear from this drive. Speed is not an issue when reading and writing this drive. (Even when using USB 2.0 but it really shines when it's plugged into a USB 3.0 port) Your'e default USB driver should be fine for the use of the drive, but it never hurts to keep your software drivers up to date. The included software for automated backup is nice, but if you're a bit of a PC control freak like myself, then it's not gonna be much of use to you. Overall, for the first time of use of this drive and coming from using mainly Western Digital storage products, it's more than worth your time and money to give this drive a shot.

    Great for added Computer Storage

I love having this backup it gives me a secure feeling. I keep my photos on this as well as on my computer because if my computer hard drive dies my pictures would be lost otherwise. It is 3 T which is a lot of photo's and computer backup space. Follow the directions for set up for your computer and you shouldn't have a problem.

I bought one of the drives wanting to get away from seagte since I heard seagate was bought out by maxtor. maxtor is well known for making less than reliable hard drives which fail within a short matter of time and Im sure if they did indeed buy out seagate seagates good name will soon be ruined also. well... the drive works flawlessly and is super quiet and I run it all the time and have it nearly full. and have NEVER had a problem with it. for those of you who wrote negative reviews ... either you didnt install it correctly or you just happpened to get a clunker. Im going to purchase another very soon.

Does not work on my Windows 7

    Posted .

In fairness, recommended only if it works for your machine because this is a great price for storage if it works. It does not work on my Windows 7 OS. Unknown to me at the time of purchase, 2 Terabytes is the maximum Hard drive size for my Windows 7 (on Dell Optiflex 3020 computer acquired Jan 2015). The machine was able to recognize a device was plugged as it made a "kaplunk" sound when plugging or unplugging the USB connector into the computer. Google searching for a fix, I learned hard drives larger than 2 TB will work only if you have a PC with an EFI/UEFI BIOS. Mine does not have a EFI/UFI BIOS. Here's a tech article explaining this. http://www.pcworld.com/article/235088/everything-you-need-to-know-about-3tb-hard-drives.html

    Great 3TB Drives

I have four of these 3TB drives. Yes, I use a lot of storage. Like most of the backup programs that come with drives, it is simplistic to the point of being useless. In the past I was using WD 3TB drives, but they consistently had problems. I am still using two of them, and holding my breath they will will continue. I have no qualms with these drives. I do recommend using 3.0 USB cards that use a power card. The usual advice is unless you are using a 3.0 external drive that does not have it own power, you don't need an internal card that does. I have learned that no to be true the hard way, losing 2 WD 3TB cards. They do make good doorstoppers, though. Anyway, these drives are great and stackable.

Easy install, good reviews and cost pushed me to purchase. 3.0 USB, 3TB and all around $100. I am about one month in and use this for not only PC backup but to stream media files to Xbox via USB to Netgear R6300. Gotta love DLNA! Stop reading and buy one!

Bought the 3 TB drive for off site back-up. Once a year, I copy all of my photos and key documents onto a drive which I store off site. Copying is through a desktop pc and from an ethernet connected Netgear NAS storage device. I'm a photographer, so photos take up 2 TB of the space. I used free 'terracopy' to transfer the files. Took a few days to fully load, but did the job without a problem. I've reconnected the drive to a laptop and confirmed all files working well.

I bought this external hard drive because my kids ran out of space on their Wii U system to download games. The hard drive cost 105 with tax not bad at all. It worked as soon as I plugged it in.

Very nice for Time Machine backup

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this for Time Machine backups and extra storage for my Mac Mini. I got the drive, reformatted it for Mac and it was up and running in about 5 mins. The only complaint I have about it, and it's not really a complaint, it's a little bit louder than my old WD 500GB drive that I replaced. The USB 3.0 is pretty fast compared to the 2.0 so if your computer doesn't have USB 3.0, throw a card in it. For any Mac users having problems with the pre-installed software, go under disk utility and reformat the drive and you shouldn't have any problems after that.

Worse than terrible. Do Not Buy.

My Toshiba drive started clicking and died after putting data on it. Now I can't get anything off it. The drive was only a few months old, but despite being new it died without warning. What's the point of backing things up if the backup does not work? What a waste of time and money! The storage device was given to me as a gift, but Toshiba refused to honor its 3 year warranty because I could not give them the receipt due to the fact that I never had one. Fortunately I am backed up to the cloud. The oldest review I could find on Toshiba's website was January 2013, meaning the entire line of Canvio 3TB drives are at most 2 years old. I explained that in any universe my drive would still fall under the three year warranty because this drive's very existence is under three years old. Toshiba insisted that without a receipt they would not provide warranty for the product. So beware: first, don't buy this drive, but if you are foolish enough to do so, hold on to your receipt, then be prepared to lose all of your data. At best they will simply send you a new drive that will certainly give you no confidence if you already lost your data once....assuming that you have any data left to lose after your first drive crashes. Toshiba Corporation is attempting to survive in the hard drive storage marketplace against strong competitors. My advice: buy any of those other drives instead. When checked today, even the Toshiba website shows this drive gets 1.5 stars out of 5 by consumers. Even they know the drive stinks. No wonder they do not want to replace it under warranty. I explained to Toshiba that if they do not honor their warranty, my only remedy as a consumer versus a big corporation is to post this warning everywhere I see their drive for sale. Even that didn't seem to make a difference--my complaint fell on deaf ears with three different claims reps. Systemic problem. Buyer beware!

The price was right and I needed some more space to back up some dvr recordings. So far I've had no problems and have used it every day since I bought it. Of course, I already have it pretty full. I waited far too long to back up all my other recordings. I don't want to be too long winded so I'll wrap this up by giving it a thumbs up.

Bought this to first store an image of my hard drive and transfer my files for a pc rebuild. Then it would be used as a primary drive after the re-installation for backup storage and transfer drive between home computer and work system of large raw video files and work related video processing. The only major problem was when hooked up for the first time, the partition read as corrupt. After re-installing the partition and re-formating with win7, I did a full check of the hard drive (came out good) and started transfering which was pretty fast. So other then the re-partition, I had no problem with the drive.

I bought this as an add-on for my 2012 Mac Mini. I had no use for the included software so I formatted for OSX and it has been working great. It is actually faster than the internal drive in speed tests when used over the mini's USB 3.0 port.
