This device works hard and plays hard. You can use the full version of Windows 8.1. Play average gaming such as Halo Assault and Six Guns. It has great sound quality. You playback video and movies up to 1080P. The resolution is very sharp for its size. Microsoft Office is great on this device. You can also download your favorite apps such as Facebook, Twitter, and Nook. This is a good tablet for running a business and for college and school. For $199.99 only no other 8inch Windows 8.1 tablet PC can beat it right now. If you are looking something easy to use and setup and get started with, then the Toshiba Encore 2 8 is the one for you. Its made for everyone.

This tablet is a good value and a great product. I would recommend it to those that are looking for a Windows based tablet. It works well and is fairly fast. Nice screen resolution. It accepts Winows 8 compatible software ( needs to installed over WiFi or from Micro SD card) as well as comes with the standard windows apps from the app store.

I had been considering buying a Windows 8 tablet for a long time. I have and love having a 10 in Android tablet while at home, but I found it too large to carry when shopping and or traveling. When I found this tablet and saw it had a one year copy of MS Office for about 50 dollars more than the price of a one year Office subscription, it was a no brainer. This tablet stores nicely in my interior coat pocket so it is great on the go. I am pleased to say that it runs Windows quickly. It syncs with my windows 8 laptop for apps and desktop. This tablet really is a small screen PC without a keyboard. That being said, I did have a little learning curve at first. I had to adjust from the way I use windows on my laptop that has no touch features to using the touch screen on the tablet. I eventually purchased a Bluetooth keyboard which I use occasionally. I highly recommend this tablet.

I use the tablet for working on the plane as it is light and compact. The screen is great and I can't believe it runs a full version of Windows. It is mostly fast but has moments where it seems to get busy. I think it would do better with more RAM but it is better than I expected. The battery is pretty good but the life is very dependent on usage, more so than a laptop is. I can use it for 6 hours doing emails with no trouble. It does suffer from that annoying Windows thing of waking up and flattening the battery doing some stuff in the background so if you need it charged in the morning than shut it down the night before.
With an OtG cable it can use USB devices just like a PC. The 8" doesn't have an external monitor port which is worth noting.

I like it a lot. It's not a device for multitasking, but i can't multitask so that works out fine I guess. The speakers being on the back is weird, but most of us will use ear buds or Bluetooth headphones, so it's not a bad thing. If you want to blast some tunes while cleaning the bathroom, just lay it screen side down and then you won't get any cleaner on it. The free office for a year is what it is. The 10 inch version has HDMI out, so... you know... whatever. It's fine.

After a huge disappointment in buying a Surface RT when it was released, I was hesitant to buy another Windows tablet but the low price and the new Intel processor convinced me to take the risk on this one. I purchased this tablet for use out of the office in my job as an attorney. It was nice to get Office 2013 included for one year and it was nice to be able to install Office 2013 on one PC as an added benefit. For me, genuine Word is a must as Google Docs just isn't quite there yet (can't seem to underline between words for case citations as required by my profession, and can't produce docs with numbered lines as required for transcriptions).
On any Windows tablet, tabs and windows on desktop applications can be tricky to close because the red X button is small and in the corner of the screen. Therefore, I use the pop-up keyboard and Alt-F4 to close windows, and Cntr-C and Cntr-V to copy and paste. Also use the available on-screen keyboard with cursor arrow keys (absolutely necessary for spreadsheet work). This is what I miss most when I use Android devices. Oh, very nice to have real Windows in this form factor.
In the final assessment this tablet works well enough to somewhat salvage the reputation of Microsoft in my mind after my Surface RT fiasco. I would buy it again without hesitation.

The tablet has a nice design and large enough to use internet and applications. It is probably a little bit at the slower end. The 1Gb RAM are definitely not enough. However, I would recommend the device for people that use it for fun and browsing the internet. I don't think it is so useful for work tasks.

The tablet had a nice size of space having 32GB. websites open fast and youtude videos did buffer on 10 to 30 minute videos. But the SD card slot was not alingn correctly, so I could not put a micro sd card inside. That was a deal breaker.

I bought this item because I was tired of luging a laptop around to read e-mails while traveling. I wanted something light and portable for internet access with decent screen size and a price tag that was reasonable. It fills the bill perfectly for what I wanted.

I bought this tablet because I wanted to try a Windows tablet, and it was inexpensive. I also wanted a small tablet that I could easily slip into a jacket pocket or a shoulder bag.
The Toshiba Encore was indeed inexpensive, small, light, and easy to carry.
But after trying to use it for four days (intensely), I ended up returning it.
Why?
1. Limited selection of apps
2. Often apps would not work properly without my having to tinker with them. Here's a good example: Windows for the tablet does not have a built-in battery gauge that shows percentage of power left. So I figure there must be a simple app that does this. There wasn't one. I found one that would do the job but only if I went to the vendor's website and downloaded a batch file which I had to run first so that the live tile would show percentage. And then that didn't always work. So to find out how much life was left in the battery, I would have to revert to the home screen and run the app again.
3. I have owned and used five tablet devices--two IOS, one Android, two Kindles--and four smart phones--three IOS, one Windows. None of them has had problems connecting with the wireless network where I work. The Toshiba Encore is the only device that has had trouble connecting to the network. More fiddling around required.
4. For all my iOS devices, I start up Apple TV or connect a cable to an adapter and I can output video to my large screen TV. At work, we can connect up to the giant monitor in the conference room. No way to get video output from the Toshiba.
5. On all the mobile devices I've owned, it's easy to enlarge the screen image, usually with a hand gesture, so I can more easily see the content. Not on the Toshiba.
6. With Windows I can get true multi-tasking (unlike IOS), but (this is my fault) I didn't think this through. On a 7-inch tablet, what would one do with multiple windows (even two split windows)? The content is too small to view much less work with efficiently. No real advantage here.
7. The battery would last maybe 5 hours with moderate use.
I ended up spending $125 more for a 32 GB iPad Mini and being MUCH happier with it.

This tablet may look great in the store and seem affordable compared to others but when it comes to real world performance it struggles. With only a single gig of ram and 32 gigs of storage you will run out of room pretty quickly and don't even think about trying to run applications that are designed for its "desktop" mode, they will most likely freeze. Returned the tablet and got an iPad

Thank you for the review, ENR1997, and sorry to hear that the 8" Encore 2 wasn't a good match for your needs.
We do offer a variety of configurations for those needing more power than what is available in this particular unit, though it is a great choice for those looking for a low-cost entry into Windows 8.1 tablet PCs.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Paired this little gem with a Bluetooth keyboard/folio case to have a Windows 8.1 device with me wherever I go. So far so good. Only complaint I have is the power button could be a bit more robust.

This is my first tablet so it is taking some time to get used to. I enjoy the ability to "mess around " with things without damaging anything. The sound and picture are average. I wish the camera was better. Wish more apps were available.

I purchased this tablet for my eleven year old niece. The battery on this tablet allows her to have more then enough time to play her games and watch movies. With it being a windows tablet it also allows her to do her homework with the included office subscription.
