I really like the windows 8 configuration, but am looking forward to the windows 10 update. This machine has plenty of memory and does everything I want it to. Skip the windows backup system though. It doesn't store much and they pressure you to buy more space. I got the bundle btw. That was the "Best Buy"

This is the worst computer that I have ever purchased or used!! I had seen this thing advertised on the Best Buy website. It looked great on the website and okay in the store. I had previously owned and used a Toshiba satellite computer. It was excellent quality for many years!! That computer is why I chose to buy this thing.
This thing is the opposite of excellent quality!! The keys stick and typing on this computer causes wrist pain. It is slower than a half-dead six year old HP. It takes forever for anything to load. As slow as this computer is now, if I try to load all the files from the HP, this computer will be non-functional and explode. The DVD player appears very flimsy and only plays some DVDs (The DVDs play without problems on other new and old devices). Windows 8.1 is its own unique nightmare. The start page is full of advertisements which further slow down this glacial machine. I could go on...
I have purchased other products from BestBuy that were excellent quality including the previous Toshiba. However, I have also purchased some useless paperweights from them including a HP Photosmart (which HP denies is an HP) which will not print anything containing a Word file (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) and a Digiland DL700D which had such amusing instructions and warnings -- for example, "When CPU in high-speed operation, especially in 3D games or in long time playback high-definition video, the fuselage will have the phenomenon of fever." The product was of comparable quality to the instructions.
Unfortunately, it is not worth the effort of bringing this thing back. Save yourself the disappointment and look elsewhere!!

I am not only disappointed in the computer itself, but also in best buy. We were not offered Geek Squad protection when purchasing this product and have had multiple issues with the computer. The keyboard turns off whenever it wants, so does the mousepad. The numbers do not work half of the time. And the computer is super-slow. I have never had a toshiba work so slowly. Ready to go back to my old computer.

I bought this because I needed a new computer, and it was a great deal! It works great, has a decent processing time, and I've had no issues with it 2 years later! I would definitely recommend it for a travelling computer, school laptop, etc!

The processor and memory on this laptop are perfect for it's use. We use it mostly for taking online courses and it works well.
In the near future we will upgrade the memory to allow for faster processing.

Disappointing Purchase

When my older Toshiba laptop started to turn itself off I decided I needed to replace it. So after much consideration I purchase the Satellite 15.6 laptop. No sooner had I taken it out of the box and started it up it crashed. I received error messages that my new laptop had been hacked and to contact Microsoft to resolve the problem. I did so and spent the next 3 hours on the phone with a belligerent individual who continued to say that it was my problem and that I would have to spend up to $500 for them to fix the problem. I finally hung up on him. I then received a call back from a supervisor who was much nicer and said that a Russian hacker had gotten into my computer (how I have no idea since I had just plugged it in) and that they could fix the problem but I would need to buy Semantic software ($149 out of pocket). He indicated that it could not be fixed unless I did so. So after I gave him my credit card number he spent the next 10 hours taking over my pc and making the necessary corrections. It does work now but seems to have many problems. When I use Microsoft word it continuously shifts words/sentences around and often deletes whole pages. I never know if emails will work or not due to the constant elimination of them in mid sentence. At best it is a hassle to use. In addition there is no easy file transfer with this laptop. I have several tax files that I am unable to transfer to this laptop.

Brand response from ToshibaStaff

Thank you for the review, Gary, and sorry to hear about the uniquely odd problems you've experienced with your Satellite C55D-B5102.
My biggest concern is your mention of error messages indicating that your computer had been hacked and referring you to make a call for help, which resulted in your being asked to pay hundreds of dollars for help. I wonder if you have any record of the number that you dialed for that call and, if so, if you've confirmed that it was truly Microsoft. Perhaps equally concerning is that someone spent 10 hours making modifications to your PC.
The best way to make absolutely sure that a problem you're experiencing isn't caused by a software or configuration issue is to perform a Windows Reset, returning the Windows installation to factory condition. See the Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article and its embedded video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 for detailed instructions on how to perform a Windows Reset.
If the problem persists after performing a Windows Reset please contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for troubleshooting help.
Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

I purchased this computer because I've had great experiences with Toshiba laptops in the past,,, When I went into the Plymouth Meeting Best Buy store, the kid (yes he looked like a kid) wasn't very helpful. I was torn between this computer and another computer, so I asked his advice (as I'm not very tech savvy) His advice "take the one with the bundle - it's a great price" and I think that it will work for your basic computer needs. So I purchased this bundle based on this person's recommendation. This computer sucks!!!! it's extremely slow, and it freezes up on me. I'm not using this computer for a lot either- I use it for iTunes, emails, and social media...I'm scared to load anything on it for fear that it will get even slower! also, after about 15 minutes of use, it gets extremely hot. I've never experienced these sort of problems with prior Toshiba laptop purchases. I think that perhaps if there was a more knowledgeable salesperson in the store, he would have steered me away from this computer
