This album rivals their first couple of releases as far as vitality and freshness. The guys are back in a good groove and enjoying what they are doing - most people can't say that after 30 years in the same old job!

It says in the liner notes to this fine album that the band felt a need to step up their game both musically and lyrically. I think they succeeded !

What I like about this CD: 1) the packaging is top shelf - it's a beauriful presentation, something you don't see very often anymore. 2) the sound is first rate as well - which should not be a surprise coming from these proven studio musicians. What I'm not crazy about is the songs - in my opinion, not one tune is memorable or "catchy". As such, it was played once or twice, then filed.

I don't think this is as good as their last album, "Falling In Between", but it's still a solid record.

In 2006 when "Falling In Between" came out I loved it! The band as much as said it was their last outing. It was a brilliant album and a great exclamation point on a stellar career. And in a way it was their last outing... at least that particular line-up of the band. And honestly I doubt that particular line-up of Toto could have topped "Falling in Between."
But fast forward nearly 10 years... Some old friends in founding members Steve Porcaro and David Hungate (at least on a few tracks), and former singer Joseph Williams back in the fold and it was apparently a shot in the arm.
As much as I loved "Falling in Between", Toto XIV blows it away! It excels on every track! There's not a bad track on the album. Some are stronger than others but there are none that would fall prey to the "skip" button.
The band is in top form and firing on all cylinders from start to finish. Keith Carlock's drumming, somewhere in between Simon Phillips and Jeff Porcaro yet in a style all his own fits the music perfectly.
This is their best album since Toto IV, perhaps their best ever. While they say this is likely their final album I can't help but think "they've got more left in the tank" when I listen to an album of this level of brilliance.

I was hoping for a shadow of Toto IV and got a mountain slide of great guitar rock. I will admit the singing is a bit less than stellar (even with the studio magic), but the songs are among the strongest rock tunes EVER. Not a clinker on the entire disc. I simply had to listen to it 3 times the first time I loaded the disc. I have not done that with ANY disc in a decade. A new masterpiece. Toto.....keep on rockin' ME and anyone else smart enough to own this album.
