The first season of True Detective has just about everything. Intriguing story, excellent characters and a gritty backdrop for the story to play out in. The best thing about this season, besides Mcconaughey's performance, is the directing and cinematography. This, along side Hannibal, is one of the best looking shows ever on tv. I was slightly disappointed with the ending, but the journey was well worth it in the end.

Phenomenal Emmy Nominated cast. Very interesting crime story. Packaging of set is nice. Not sure why a 8 episode season couldn't fit on 1, let alone 3 blu Ray disc. Probably to come off as a better value to the consumer on a 3 disc set. In any event, highly recommended. You will not be disappointed. Rewatched season with a friend who never saw it air on HBO in early January 2013. They were blown away. A must have for your TV series collection.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson team up again!! This drama catches you from the get go and slowely pulls you into the depths of the minds of both lead actors. This is a thinking mans drama as you try to get into the minds/thought process- which are distinctively different- of both actors. The series unfolds out like a long dramatic play in front of your very eyes as it draws to a climactic end Can't wait for next season!.

If you ever watched True Detective or are contemplating buying this season 1 box set, I highly recommend it. Through it's dark, mystifying background, this was the best show of 2014. This is Matthew McConaughey at his absolute finest in a mold atypical of what you're accustomed to. Woody Harrelson is also superb, however Matthew absolutely steals the show. Brilliant; dark; & thought provoking. Highly recommended.

I cant say anything but good about this series. It kept me interested from start to finish. I watched the entire series in one night. The plot is so wild. The acting is great. I cant wait till season two comes out on dvd. I dont watch tv a lot because it seems its all reality shows or reruns . The shows I have watched that are new fail to keep me interested..This show however, I just couldnt get enough of, I loved it

Matthew McConaughey is a very good actor. Since his role in Lincoln Lawyer, he has really established himself as one of the better actors on the screen. Of course he followed up with Mud and Dallas Buyers Club. Woody Harrelson seems a bit uneasy in his part in True Detectives. He is not really a natural but is a decent actor that fills the role, but he is a good supporting actor. Even in The Hunger Games he is ok but not really why you would watch this series. The story is interesting enough about a child killer and holds your interest to the end. The ending is interesting enough to warrant your attention through the series. Too bad they did not follow up with the same people in season two.

First time through you should be drawn in by the performances. Upon further viewing, the writing and directing really take hold and lodge you into an atmospheric dreamland. This is a story both philosophical and brooding, leaving you wanting to investigate it further, just like the 2 mains characters.

My high score on this product is mainly based on the quality of the content. However I am sorely disappointed in the condition that it was received. Upon opening the package to a presumably brand new product there was already significant damage to the outside case and although it is cosmetic it was a Christmas gift. I hope the contents remain unscathed as there is no reason to believe that there would be damage inside. Best buy will hear from me if on Christmas Day I find a less than whole disc within.

great blue ray quality in picture and sound surrounds a fantastic story in the search for an elusive serial killer. Mathew mcconaughey and woody harrelson try to blend their polar opposite detective styles into a story narrated by each to you as the story unfolds on the screen. the killer a disturbed psycho or occultist leads the story as he murders over decades and refuses to be stopped.

I love True Detective season 1, and I think it succeeds despite the sometimes clunky writing of creator/show runner Nic Pizzolatto. The performances of the 2 leads are amazing, and the direction of Cary Fukunaga should be studied in film schools. I wish there was more supplemental material (commentary or short feature) featuring just Fukunaga talking about the choices he made.

One of the best new shows of 2014 is True Detective. McConaughey and Harrelson give some of the best performances of their career. It's an intriguing mystery that absolutely pops on sweet baby blu. The Blu-Ray packaging is meant to look worn down, which is a nice touch that fits with the show. This great release could have used some more special features, but it's a must buy regardless.

Removed from the internet theories, the first season of True Detective still works. It's still a great character study, even if the mystery is more conventional than some hoped, and the interplay between McConaughey and Harrelson makes for compelling television. I don't mean to bag on the second season, but compared to the first go, it's a pale imitation.

This is by far the best show on TV now that Breaking Bad has ended. The performances by Woody and Matthew in the first season are outstanding. I can't believe the entire season was written and directed by two people. The series follows two detectives as they pursue a crazed serial killer in Louisiana. I highly recommend this riveting series!

This first season was nothing short of amazing, both in the acting and the plot. The character development is spot on and the plot kept me glued to the couch foregoing sleep to watch "one more episode". Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConahay are simply amazing together. I would highly recommend this for any adult who enjoys an edge of your seat drama/mystery/action series

a very well done crime (mini) series, about the relationship between the two detectives, played by Harrelson and McConaughey, as they chase a serial killer. You don't need to worry about investing the time in a series that goes year after year, the first season story arc is wrapped up in one season. The second season is a different story with different characters.

The terrible second season has only reinforced what viewers of Season 1 already knew - that the writing, acting and tone of True Detective's first storyline cannot be beat. To just watch Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and the supporting class is a pleasure, to have it tied to Nic Pizzolatto's excellent plotline and incredible atmosphere is a delight.

The story telling in this show is amazing. I could sit down and watch the series in one sitting multiple times and enjoy every minute. The ability of this story to pull you in is excellent. Was great to have this around after the second season disappointed. This one is so good it makes me want to overlook the second season and I cant wait for season three.

There are many surprises in this series, it will keep you guessing all the way through! The Bluray packaging is good, pretty standard, nothing really extraordinary. The acting, by the way is top notch, MM was shockingly good, and Woody remains as good as he's ever been. I'm very picky about the shows I watch, and I still give this one a 4.5 stars.

I loved this series! Some may find it too dark, but I loved the haunting music, the creepy characters, and the inherent disagreement among the characters. Matthew McConauaghey will blow you away, and Woody Harrelson is impressive in carrying a conflicted character. Great series. I hope they do not do a second season because this one was a gem in itself.

I watched this show over the 8 weeks when it originally aired. I knew I would likely have access On Demand in the future but I wanted to be able to re-watch and it was well worth it. The second time I picked up on all the subtle hints along the way and it made the experience much more enjoyable. If only they had done better with Season 2 :(
