This is a very odd movie, the message is good but there are a lot of things that feel very forced and shoved in your face which made me think "Yep, I know what that one is suppose to mean" on more than one occasion.

Average to below average Disney film with a few annoying characters: the father and the constant face-straining friend of the main character. Unlike most Disney Pixar films, we will not watch this film again.

Nothing special about the case design, just the movie poster characters, BUT: Scratch magnet quality steelbook, not well made as expected. Film was a letdown, expected better, with annoying characters. Sorry, can't recommend it.

Adorable and heartfelt story about mothers and their daughters. Chinese-Canadian director Domee Shi’s Pixar animated coming of age fantasy film Turning Red (2022) is a magnificent art piece that families will surely love for generations to come. Shi’s direction is so earnest, playful, and unapologetically centered around Canadian and Asian culture. Truly she’s got a love of cute animals, pop music, and cultural heritage. Turning Red is hilarious with outrageous jokes and references, not to mention adorably featuring fluffy red pandas! Domee Shi is a director to watch for as Turning Red is instantly one of my favorite movies of the year. Turning Red is on par with Pixar’s finest films like Ratatouille, WALL-E, Monsters, Inc., Inside Out, or Luca. I’m so glad that Pixar director Pete Docter, Lindsey Collins, and Dan Scanlon produced Turning Red and entrusted Domee Shi with a feature length film. It feels like an important story for young girls to see how they will grow up, but also how they can remain true to themselves. I was very happy to hear that Domee Shi was promoted to Pixar’s Vice President of their creative team after directing such a wonderful picture with her Turning Red. Writers Julia Cho, Domee Shi, and Sarah Streicher combine fun-loving girls growing up in Toronto during the early 2000’s, while balancing that with generational trauma. Turning Red features mature topics like, Children feeling the growing pains of becoming young ladies and anxieties of puberty, periods, parental pressure, peer pressure, school bullying, personal agency, friendship, crushes, and bodily changes are all featured in Turning Red. You know that Turning Red would have important discussions as the movie’s title is itself an allegory to menstruation. I appreciate Domee Shi wanting to tell girls life will force you to brace for pain, but your friends and family can help aid you in your journey towards womanhood. The jokes the teenagers share feel like things real girls say with their actual slang for added realism. I found Turning Red so funny, fresh, and uplifting. From dancing red pandas to sincere dramatic understanding across generations, Turning Red has it all. Pixar’s animation is as cute as ever with fluffy red pandas that move within their massive mass, Turning Red is beautifully animated. Everything has these vibrant pastel colors of lush reds and softer blues. The entire film looks like cotton candy. It’s so adorable and pretty with Pixar’s cutest animation yet. I’m quite astounded with how fluid and fluffy Pixar’s animation looks now. Editor Nicholas C. Smith’s cuts are so sharp and well timed. Some scenes can feel like teenagers genuinely fangirling over a boyband, then quickly turning into a horror feel when the mother appears for some over the top hover-parenting. How is Turning Red 100 minutes long? It feels like 30 minutes with an ultra fast pacing and delightfully concise storytelling. Shi’s directorial style allows for calm talking, then bursts into rapid fire action cuts for dynamics. Cinematographers Mahyar Abousaeedi and Jonathan Pytko go for broke with these amazing long panning shots across Toronto. As Mei’s giant red panda sprints across rooftops or down a street, the camera follows closely. There’s many visual jokes with perspective just from Abousaeedi and Pytko’s creative camerawork. I love all the tender close-ups and medium shots for the family conversations. Turning Red is full of wonderful heart to heart conversations. Rosalie Chiang is adorable and mesmerizing as Meilin "Mei" Lee. She gets her teenage frustrations, awkward crushing, and playful energy to a tee. Sandra Oh is all encompassing as Mei’s vastly overprotective mother Ming Lee. Oh nails Ming’s desire for Mei’s love and obedience as well as her indignant outrage when Mei does not comply. Ava Morse is fabulous as Mei’s tomboy best friend Miriam Mendelsohn. She sounds so sincere and supportive with a gentle touch to her vocal performance. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan pulls off deadpan as Mei’s Indian friend Priya Mangal. Hyein Park screams enthusiastically as Mei’s aggressive friend Abby Park. Orion Lee is so sweet and reassuring as Mei’s supportive father Jin Lee. His quiet scenes are much appreciated and maybe my favorite moments in Turning Red. Lee was phenomenal in First Cow if you want to see him again. Wai Ching Ho is excellent as Mei’s severe grandmother Wu, who scolds Ming with her disapproving gazes and strict words. Iconic actor James Hong is funny and delightful as always with his voice work as the pleasant Mr. Gao. He gets one of the funniest lines before revealing he has a sword. Finneas O'Connell even voices one of the 4*Town boy band singers! Tristan Allerick Chen is great as Mei’s bully Tyler Nguyen-Baker with his cocky attitude and cruel taunts. Addie Chandler is fun as Mei’s crush, the dead from the neck up Devon, who works as a local convenience store clerk. Sasha Roiz is really funny as the deadpan teacher Mr. Kieslowski. Lily Sanfelippo gets a hilarious gasp as Mei’s classmate Stacy Frick, who sees the red panda in the girl’s restroom. Rona Liu’s production design creates quaint home spaces and recreates Toronto in 2002. I loved seeing all the little locations that are real. Pixar used lovely hand drawn animation on top of Pixar’s state of the art 3D animation techniques for Turning Red’s unique aesthetic. Set decorators Eric Andraos and Steve Karski provide all manner of boyband imagery to adorn Mei’s room alongside her cuddly plushies and schoolwork. Visual effects artists Patty Kihm Stevenson, Aaron Hartline, and Danielle Feinberg create impressive CGI for Mei’s transformations between fuzzy red panda and awkward schoolgirl. The colorful spirit world and glowing effects are fantastic. Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson kills it for Turning Red’s delightful score. He pulls off energetic electronic tracks for his peppy soundtrack. He effortlessly and respectfully combines traditional Chinese instrumentation with modern Canadian electronic music from that era. I love that pop goddess Billie Eilish and her producing brother Finneas wrote believable early 2000’s boy band songs for 4*Town’s pop hits! Sound designers Ren Klyce, Steve Bissinger, Jonathon Stevens, Stephen Urata, and Coya Elliott really play around with Turning Red’s song introductions, bigger footsteps for the red pandas, and clean vocal mixing. In all, I adored Domee Shi’s Turning Red! I recommend it for families of all ages to enjoy.
