This scanner does it all and does it very well. Comes with everything you need to get started. Programming software and usb cables included. No subscription necessary to get your local frequencies. You can literally take it out of the box plug it up, put in your zip code and you're set.
I would recommend trying out other programs for logging, recording, and streaming audio over Wi-Fi.

Great Radio with a bit of a Learning Curve

Gone are the days when you could direct program a scanner by using a keypad... although there is a keypad with this unit of course - it is used best for making minor corrections or additions here or there... to unlock the potential of this radio you of course need a computer and the Uniden Sentinel program. The program is somewhat ancient, but it is always updated to give you both the latest frequency database and 536HP firmware. When you turn the unit on, it gives a date of 2014 on the display lol... again though, the Sentinel program keeps it up to date...
I am in the Los Angeles area, and after maybe 30-40 minutes of fishing around, I was able to locate, chose, and install the departments I wanted to listen to ... it is very important to note the database breaks these frequencies down by Department Dispatch, Tactical, and talkaround - if you want to hear everything, these are all OPTIONS you must make sure are selected when you create your monitoring lists... for several days I couldn't figure out why mine was only getting fire dispatch and not fireground tactical channels... then I discovered via the computer software that those tactical channels were not enabled, even though they were entered into the scanner and being scanned... very frustrating to figure out but at the end of the day, everything is working perfectly. I'm using the supplied indoor antenna and am able to listen to everything within a 25 mile radius absolutely fine. Just remember, whatever you want to do internally (other than setting lockouts, or AVOIDS as they are now called and other minor adjustments) with the unit is done better via a USB cable and a computer!
