McKay & Co. Bring the Satire along w/ the Serious

Doing what is right is boring. Following the rules is boring. Doing what is wrong is entertaining. Bending and breaking the rules is amusing. Movies should not be made about politicians, but given most politicians don't do the right thing rather often and tend to break and bend the rules to fit their own needs and agenda as frequently as they need to it is no surprise there are plenty of television shows and movies based around and on political figures. There is a brief scene in Adam McKay's latest film, Vice, based around the life of Vice President Dick Cheney where he is teaching one of his daughter's how to fish and she asks if the trick of baiting the fish with a live worm is right or wrong-you know, morally. Cheney replies that, "It's not right or wrong, it's just fishing." His daughter admits to not wanting to hurt the worm, but her father summarizes his justification for the sport by stating, "You find out what they want and you use it to catch them. The family gets to eat." It is with this perspective that Cheney seemed to approach his political career as well-it also exemplifies how every single line and aspect of McKay's film is integral to the portrait the writer and filmmaker is painting. "It's not right or wrong, it's just what needs to be done." What McKay is really exploring through Vice though, is this idea of how does a man go on to become who he is? The film describes life as being a series of events that contain certain moments that are so delicate, that they are akin to a stack of teacups with a saucer in between each where-at any moment-one could fall in any direction and change the course of the future forever. Unfortunately, there's no way to know the future and which way things will fall, but while McKay is keen to note that Cheney more or less fell into the roles he would eventually allow to define the purpose of his life largely due to the involvement of his wife, what he seems particularly interested in dissecting is how Cheney came to view the job of serving the country and how he interpreted that responsibility as it becomes very clear that Cheney and his staff were experts at interpreting things strictly in the way they wanted and in what would benefit their cause best. What McKay is truly attempting to do is bring about a case concerning how Cheney had his hands in so many pies, either for reasons of his own agenda or for what he truly thought was best for the country (it's hard to tell from one issue to the next), and that the result of these meddling's effectively changed the course of history. McKay wants the viewer to not only read that tagline that could easily be misconstrued as a piece of hyperbole and understand it, but to grasp it and take to heart; to truly understand the ramifications of this single man's actions in determining the fate of millions upon millions of other people's lives.

    What Power Can Do

Let’s get one thing out of the way, Bale’s transformation into the former Vice President, Dick Cheney is flawless and makes the film worth the price of admission alone. Watching the likes of Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell in supporting roles is a blast as well. They’re all quite good. McKay’s direction zigs and zags here and there and tonally it doesn’t always work and frankly, it condescends some. Nevertheless “Vice” remains highly entertaining and offers substantial food for thought and that’s definitely no small feat. “Vice” and McKay are toying with the audience the whole way through. It plays as farce, scathing indictment, black comedy, dark-satire, and a painful reminder of what power can do. Despite McKay’s condescending tone, it’s not difficult to recognize “Vice” as the work of the man who wrote and directed “The Big Short”, one of 2015’s best films and frankly, “Vice” is one of 2018’s best.

Vice Isn't Nice but It Is Funny

This political bio-pic about former Vice President and conservative curmudgeon Dick Cheney takes no prisoners in skewering the man and the administration he helped lead. A cast led by Oscar nominees Christian Bale and Amy Adams as the Cheneys and Sam Rockwell as W. takes us through Dick's formative years in politics and big business. We get to see him both needy and weak and mean and vindictive in director Adam McKay's telling of his life story, and Bale delivers a brilliant impersonation that hints at the dark currents inside Cheney's troubled heart. Another standout is Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, Cheney's conniving rival inside the Bush administration. This was one of 2018's best films and is a personal triumph for McKay, who proves that "The Big Short" was no fluke. If you have the time and stomach for it, pair "Vice" with Oliver Stone's "W." for a double dose of presidential pratfalls and political scheming.

I actually wondered why a filmmaker would make story about Cheney, well, this film answers it. It's a bizarre journey through this man's life from early years to the VP spot in the Bush administration. It's not perfect, there are lapses, and then moments of brilliance. The performances are all ideal. At the end you may question what you just saw, and not sure what to think. That was my thought. But I wasn't bored, more curious. As I said, a strange piece, but one worth taking a look at.

The movie is very interesting but "The Big Short" is better. There isn't a director's commentary but there are two featurettes that have combine length of forty minutes. The featurettes cover the story, cast, make up and production design. There are twenty minutes of deleted scenes including a short movie about Lynne and Dick during their high school years. There are photo galleries and one theatrical trailer. There is a DVD and digital copy.

This movie presents the lives of Dick Cheney (Christian Bale), his wife (Amy Adams) , and two daughters, from Dick's youth to his vice presidency. It gives us insight into the roles his very ambitious wife, a political daughter and a gay daughter played. The portrayals are neither harsh nor sparing, but bring out the inner emotional workings of this family and politics. George W Bush (Sam Rockwell) and Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell) also get their due. All of these actors and others completely, believably immerse themselves in their roles.

This is an important movie as it portrays the the driving force in the G.W. Bush presidency. Bale does a magnificent job in portraying this malicious character. Most of the acting was superb, but the one character I thought wasn't that accurately portrayed was Donald Rumsfeld who was made to look as a clown more than the cold and manipulative person he really was. >There was humor in this movie but it was used to highlight some of the absurdities of this period.

Wasn’t expecting much from McKay going from comedy to dram. I was sorely wrong! I found that I underestimated the mastery he put with his comedies and now transferred it over to another fantastic film. This a bit more in the political satire realm than straight drama or comedy. The cast is great! Especiallyt Steve Carrell! Greig Fraser does some more masterful cinematography! All around fantastic!

    Great Pseudodocumentary With Satirical Overtones

A presentation of events at the time, but with a lot of liberties taken with respect to the content of certain exchanges and events for which there is no exact record. These are usually acknowledged as such, either before or after their presentation and tend to be heavy handed satire. Very entertaining film, but don't use it as a reliable source of accurate info throughout.

This isn't my normal fare for movies but I must say it was an interesting take on the life of our former vice president. To be honest, I really didn't think this movie warranted creation. Who really cares about what the vice president did, but I actually wanted to know as the movie progressed. I can't say I would watch this repeatedly but it's worth one good watch.

Director Adam McKay, while trying to portray Dick Cheney as an evil man, actually brings him across as one of the most intelligent men to ever serve in the White House. Vice President Cheney was and will always be an American hero. The last 5 minutes of the film prove this point. He is unapologetic, as he should be, for protecting the lives of countless Americans.

Really great movie that documents Dick Cheney's rise to power during George W. Bush's presidency. Amazing jog Christian Bale did in performing Dick Cheney. This movie demonstrates how Cheney manipulates his way to becoming the most powerful Vice President in history. Captivating storyline!

Adam McKay does a great job again shining a light for people to see the truth. Similar to his work on the Big Short, we get a behind the scenes look at a man that secretively molded America into what it is today. Or the best he could since the real Cheney wouldn’t answer any question. If you enjoyed the Big Short, you’ll like this too

Was a very good reminder of the Bush son administration. Thought the movie was over when going through the Cheney career but the movie was just starting. Dick Cheney was a politician that had connections and knew how to get things done. Very good movie

Whether you love the guy or hate him I would highly recommend checking out this movie. Christian’s incredible performance of Dick is amazing. At times I forgot it wasn’t the real man on screen. It was a unique look at that time in American history.

Recently watched Vice, which explores the Vice President Dick Cheney and his family. The film went through his rise from his early stages of going into Politics and what role he played till he was placed with George W. Bush. Also, historical facts with comedy allowed it to be an entertaining film.

This is not a documentary and takes liberties with facts. It's a great movie if you dont take it too seriously. There may be some truth behind this but watch it knowing you are watching a movie. It's great and the acting is phenomenal. If you are interested in politics it should be entertaining.

There are not a lot of movies that are worth multiple viewings, this one is worth a few. Even from a semi-fictional viewpoint, this movie explains a lot about how we got here from Clinton. Sad history, good flick.

Great acting by Christian Bale, who is almost unrecognizable as Dick Cheney. It gives some insight into how power manipulates people. Recommend if you want to see how some of the politics in Washington works.
