VERDICT: If you’re new to dash cams, Viofo is one of the most respected brands on the market. The A229 Pro is one of their flagship models, and after owning several dash cams over the years, I can confidently say it’s in a different league. The video quality, license plate readability, and nighttime performance are outstanding. While the app still has room for improvement, the camera itself delivers where it matters most. I’ll cover both the pros and cons, but there honestly isn’t much to criticize. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this dash cam to anyone looking for reliable protection on the road. It’s one of those products you hope you never need, but you’ll be glad you have it if the unexpected happens. THE GOOD: Installation is straightforward if you’ve installed a dash cam before. I used an OBD-II power cable, but a hardwire kit is another excellent option if you want 24/7 parking mode. Keep in mind it is recommended to get a microSD card to store recordings locally. The hardware is excellent. The image quality isn’t quite as sharp as a modern smartphone, but it’s among the best you’ll find in a dash cam. Even while driving at highway speeds, it can often capture license plates and road signs clearly, something many cheaper cameras struggle to do. Right out of the box, the footage looks great. It also includes a circular polarizing (CPL) filter that helps reduce windshield glare and reflections while improving color and contrast. Combined with Sony’s STARVIS 2 image sensor, the A229 Pro delivers excellent daytime clarity and impressive low-light performance. The field of view isn’t excessively wide, which actually helps preserve image detail while still capturing everything important. You can see the coverage in the sample photos included with this review. The built-in GPS works well. Thankfully I haven’t had to rely on it after an accident, but it accurately records vehicle speed in MPH or km/h along with location data. When paired with parking mode through a hardwire kit or OBD-II cable, the camera can also automatically begin recording after detecting motion or an impact while your vehicle is parked. THE BAD: A microSD card is recommended,, but one isn’t included in the box, so be sure to factor that into your budget. I’m using a 512GB card and haven’t had any storage issues. As impressive as the dash cam is, the app is probably its weakest point. It can be buggy and isn’t the most intuitive to use, especially during the initial setup. Fortunately, once everything is configured, you rarely need to use it. I originally downloaded the older “Viofo” app before switching to the newer “Viofo Dashcam” app, which is a significant improvement. The interface is much cleaner, and it includes useful features like geofencing, allowing the camera to disable parking recordings in designated safe locations, such as your garage. I’ve noticed the dash cam does get hot at times so I try not to park in the sun during the summer, but I haven’t seen any loss in image quality or side effects from the hot dash cam. HEADS UP: If your vehicle uses Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you may initially worry about compatibility since the dash cam communicates over Wi-Fi. Fortunately, this isn’t much of an issue in everyday use. You only need to connect to the dash cam’s Wi-Fi during the initial setup or when reviewing footage. The rest of the time, your phone can stay connected to your vehicle through CarPlay or Android Auto without any problems.

My husband and I have been wanting to purchase a dash cam for quite some time. After much research, and talking with VIOFO customer service directly we purchased the A229. We had our mechanic hardwire the device and cameras which he said was not difficult to do. We are looking forward to having 24/7 cameras on when the vehicle is parked. We haven't had a chance to use the cam much, yet, so we have given this 4 stars right now. But, due to such excellent customer service from VIOFO so far we have given this 4 stars.

I recently upgraded to the VIOFO A229 Pro , from this other dash cam I had, and the difference is night and day. The 4K footage is incredibly crisp, but what really blew me away was the night performance , the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor combined with HDR makes it so I can actually read license plates in low light, which was always a struggle with my old cam. Another huge plus is the transfer speed; the 5GHz Wi-Fi makes downloading clips to my phone way faster than I expected. I also like that this is a 2-channel system, having the option to add a rear camera for full coverage is a great safety feature. If you're serious about your car's security, this is the one to get.

This is the first dashcam I've purchased or ever used. With an increasing amount of "crazy", distracted, aggressive, & poorly trained drivers on the road I decided to purchase this. It was rather easy to install while a little intimidating, it was useful right of the bat. Within a week I was able to capture someone driving on the wrong side of the road directly towards me, luckily no accident. But i was at least a bit more reassured having the footage. I've had no real issues using it, it's rather easy, & there are already plenty of videos online explaining anything you might want to know regarding settings & whatnot. The images & video are clear enough to see the cars in your area & detailed enough for any information. I did purchase this when it was on sale.

Purchased this camera after an ambulance chaser targeted my wife’s car. Very happy with this purchase and the install from Best Buy. Easy to use camera. Be sure to purchase hardwire kit and a larger SD card.

Viofo A229 Pro was purchased and installed by Best Buy. Very satisfied with the product. Only minor glitch is I don't know where the setting was set for the car battery drain. After leaving it on for two days my battery died. (It is a good battery and recharged well). Now I am making sure I always manually shut off the dashcam, and so far the battery has been fine.

Bought one of these for my sister and she has loved it (thankfully she's not needed it to prove anything though!) and so I bought one for myself. Super simple to install and setup, and I've got the quality turned all the way up (which means each minute of video takes about 850MB for the two files - one each for front and back camera), and it looks AMAZING. Our elderly father used the car recently and I was able to check afterwards to see how his driving was.

Cables are too short to install front mount camera cleanly in 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Had to buy clips to keep cable secure because securing the cable in the trim made it too short to reach the 12 volt adapter. Looks ugly and make a good looking product feel cheap. The return policy is 15 days from purchase. It took a 8 days to be shipped and delivered. By the time installed it and saw the cable issue it was past the 15 day return policy. I would t recommend this product.

The dash cam records super clear and the installation was easy to do with minimum tools
