The Cowboy Ethos

I have long heard of the silent cowboy star William Hart and even toured the park and museum named after him in Newhall, but had never seen any of his films. Wagon Tracks impressed me because it was much more than a simple shoot em up western. The story gets us inside Hart's character as he wrestled with conflicting emotions of grief, desire for justice and even revenge, respect for women, and commitment to his responsibilities to others. Hart is not simply a "white hat" but a complex man who can be both kind and cruel, a man of rectitude, of passion, of firm convictions, yet uncertainty. While the style of acting in silent films can put off people not familiar with it, I was engrossed as the story unfolded.
I would recommend this to a friend

With most of silent cinema having been lost over the years, it's cause for excitement when a label like Olive releases such titles is with cleaned up, semi-restored transfers. While the feature is short by modern standards at around 70 minutes, it packs in a great amount of action and some nice landscape shots. Good A/V. Recommended to fans of silent cinema.
