Customers are positive about the D30 Game Drive's large storage capacity, compact size, and impressive performance, with many praising its ease of use and portability. They also appreciate the sleek design and reasonable price. However, customers are negative about compatibility issues, noting that some games cannot be played directly from the external drive. The drive's functionality is limited for certain games on newer consoles.

If you're a gamer of any kind, you know that occasionally we all run into the problem of running out of space. That usually then leads us to the dilemma of, "Which game do I uninstall?"
If you can't decide what game to remove, additionally storage space is the next best option. You could go with a number of different storage options, but this product SSD game drive by Western Digital offers that at a great price for the Xbox console and does so at no consequence of performance. While I don't have an Xbox Series X, yet, I have been able to use this product with my Xbox One X flawlessly. Transferring games over to this SSD was a breeze and even playing games right off the SSD felt like there was no lag or performance issues at all, which is attributed to it's read speed. It also comes with a nice little stand to set beside the console, if you want, and the SSD feels durable - though I wouldn't recommend testing that out too much as it is an electronic component.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who has a game library needing extra storage. It's particularly useful to me, personally, as I can use this for games I don't play as frequently as I once had, though I may occasionally play nowadays.

Perfect Hard drive expansion for your game system

When you get the newest version of the Xbox, the more you pay the better memory and options you are going to get. And when you want speed of access to your memory on your Xbox, you want SSD vs a standard HD. Also, this works with your PS 5 if that is your choice of a system to play with. Regardless of your system, the Western Digital D30 Game Drive is an amazing add on to your game system.
SSD memory is faster as I mentioned, but unless you have a faster USB port, it is almost worthless. But this has a USB C connection which is much faster than your standard USB style connector. The point being, is that this portable drive is a very small drive in size, but it has a whole 1TB of memory for your system.
You will see that WD has other options and they hold more memory. I think one of them holds 2TB. That is great if you are looking for more memory, but those drives have your standard HDD drive which as I mentioned before is significantly slower. And as my Gamer son tells me, games are all about speed. Not just how fast your internet speed is, but also how fast your device performs.
As far as performance, I don’t have any way to tell just how fast it is, and I don’t have a standard USB device to show me the difference. So the manufacturer says a read speed of 900MB per second. Again, I don’t have a point of reference for comparison, but in actually using it I cannot see a difference between accessing something from the game system vs accessing something off the hard drive. So to me, that is more than I need (or my son needs).
The drive itself is substantial. It is well made, and feels well made. It is sleek and black and matches the look of a game system. Plus it is small so you can hide it out of the way or at least it wont take up much space in the shelf.
This is a great product that I would be happy to get again. It meets all my needs and it has the performance to back it up. If someone were to ask me what hard drive they should add to their game system, there is no doubt this would be my first thought and choice. I highly recommend it for you PS5 and Xbox fans.

1TB, Compact, Very Fast, Looks Great. Good Value

There is a lot to like about this drive, but in truth, all I really need to say is that it pretty much has everything I was looking for.
I like the look and design. It fits in well with the Xbox and is VERY small and compact. It looks “right” sitting next to it. USB-C connectivity is the perfect choice. It’s versatile. Also, setup is fast and simple, basically plug and play. Once up and running, transfers are very fast, which is pretty much what it is all about. The other key is the capacity. I think the 1TB size is the sweet spot here. Enough to clear up some space on my machine, with a little to spare, but not so much that the cost is prohibitive.
In the end, that is what it comes down to. It has all the features I was looking for and is a good mix of those things all for a good price. All in all, a great value.

WD - WD_BLACK D30 1TB Game Drive
Gamers Can Relate:
In this day and age of gaming, we have A LOT of games to choose from which means we can accumulate an extensive collection of games that occupy precious hard drive space. All of us have faced the dilemma of what game(s) or gameplay video to delete to make just enough room to install a new game whether it’s a digital or physical copy.
I’ve never used an external game drive with my previous systems because I justified why I would need to delete a game. However, this new generation of gaming delivers games that are much bigger in file sizes due to high definition and ray tracing technology. Sure, my Xbox Series X has 1TB of memory but that memory will be quickly occupied by games that you download from Game Pass because you have a vast variety of choices. Having an additional 1TB of memory eases my mind knowing that I won’t be running out of room anytime soon.
The WD Black D30 Game Drive is INSANELY easy to implement with your existing Xbox system.
Setting Up:
There isn’t any complicated setup. Remove the Game Drive from the package, and plug it into the Xbox system. For me, I used one of the USB ports on the back of my Series X console.
The Xbox system will prompt a message asking if the Game Drive will be used for Media or if you want to Format Storage Device. I chose to format. The Game Drive also comes with a neat little stand that allows you to place it upright near your system.
Storing Games:
I already had games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Batman the Arkham Collection, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and Call of Duty Warzone on the Series X internal hard drive. That’s over 300GB of storage. I decided to move those games to the external Game Drive. It was another easy process via the console settings and going into storage options. 138GB from the Halo MCC transferred in about 25 minutes. And you aren’t stuck looking at the transfer progress bar, you can play other games as the Game Drive works in the background.
No Regret:
Sooner or later, you will be faced with the hard choice of what game or games to delete to make room for another. It’s better to get ahead of that situation and invest in an external Game Drive and have peace of mind.

Blazing fast storage for your Xbox console!

If you're looking to add storage to your Xbox One or Series X or S consoles, look no further! This drive is blazing fast and lets you backup and transfer games to it from your console much faster than traditional external hard drives. Not all games will play from this drive on the Series X/S so I would recommend on focusing on transferring only original Xbox titles, Xbox One and Original Xbox titles as they will all play from it directly, and load fast directly from this drive! The newer Xbox Series X and S game titles do NOT play directly from it and require the internal storage or a special expansion card. This isn't so much a limitation of this drive but a limitation that Microsoft has in the design of the Series X/S consoles. In terms of how this drive looks, I like the stand and the LED light on it and it's just the right size next to your console or gaming PC.
You can use this drive with a PC just like you can a console and with a compatible USB Type C or Gen 2 USB 3.0 port it is just as blazing fast as it is on the Xbox Series X console. I do want to clarify that as with other external drives, if you format it for your Xbox console, you can't use it on your PC or expect to play backed up games from an Xbox on your PC or vice versa!
This is a great economical way to backup all of your original Xbox games and Xbox One games to play them directly from the drive on the Series X. It's more than fast enough for that and meets that need perfectly! If you want a drive that you can play Series X/S games from directly, you'll have to go to Microsoft for a list of cards that are approved to be used as SSD storage and in which case you'll find they are NOT the same type of connection as this drive and plug in to the storage expansion slot.

A Must for Game Pass Subscribers

As a Xbox Game Pass member, along with the inability to stay focused on one particular game, the WD Black D30 is a great option for expanding storage or toting digital downloads from one Xbox to another (especially if you have more than one in your household like me).
Firstly, I was surprised by the size of the drive. It is way smaller and compact than I imagine (smaller than the size of an Xbox controller). Regardless, the size does not hinder its performance. It has a bit of a rugged look, which is nice. There is a vertical stand, which I prefer to use.
While there are better expandable storage options for Xbox Series S/X (like the expansion cards), the D30 is still an affordable option for saving games without having to delete them to make more room for other games. The issue is a lot of current titles made for Series S/X will not run directly from the drive, which means you will have to move the game from the D30 to your Xbox (which can take up to 30 minutes depending on the game, so make sure you plan accordingly).
A plus, for those of you without Game Pass, is that this comes with a code for a free month (it only works with new members, not existing ones).
Overall, the D30 is a great external drive that serves as an expandable storage solution for your Xbox. It works very well, provides superior performance, and is compact enough to not take up a lot of space. I highly recommend for those of you needing more storage space.

When you get a WD drive, you expect high quality, and WD delivered once again.
The speed on this is amazing. It isn't quite as fast as the internal storage of the Series X, but is faster than the internal storage for the One.
As a matter of comparison, I tried playing Final Fantasy 15 on both the internal hard drive on my XBox One, the internal drive on my Series X, and on this (connected to the Series X). The typical loading time on the XBox One was between half a minute and a minute, the internal drive on the Series X was only a matter of seconds, and this drive pleasantly surprised me with load times consistently in the 15-20 second range.
Literally the only thing that I can fault this drive for is that it does tend to get a little warm after extended use, but I understand that is the nature of SSDs and there really isn't much that manufacturers can do to change that.

I am using this with the new XBOX Series S and could not be happier with it. We were able to hustle up an overpriced XBOX Series S at Christmas off EBAY but had to settle for the smaller hard drive due to supply and demand. I have been looking to add an external drive but knew to truly enjoy the benefits of the next gen console I would need to make sure we got an SSD. The WD D30 is a wonderful choice, and I cannot tell any differences when playing any of the games I have stored on it as opposed to what is actually stored on the XBOX. The unit is very aesthetically pleasing and sits nicely on my desk right next to my console. I highly recommend as an external SSD HD for any device you need expandable storage for.

We all know one of the biggest flaws of next generation gaming is storage space. Xbox has their own product but it seems to be a bit more geared towards extending the space of the next gen games. I needed something more for my Xbox360 and Xbox games. I don’t need the blazing fast speed of the new hard drive in the Xbox. So I was extremely surprised when I’m loading the games from this external sad didn’t seem to be that different from the internal one.
If you need more space for your older games on the Xbox I highly recommend this drive it’s small so it doesn’t take up much space and it works great.

I love the aesthetic of this drive and that it comes with its own stand. The black and white compliments the Series S well. The load times are extremely fast and it’s great have the extra storage I can just plug in and set on the shelf. It also makes for great portability of going to someone else’s house. Western Digital makes great drives and this is no exception.

As long as you know what you’re getting when you purchase this, you should be happy with it. But if you’re uninformed going in, then you may be disappointed. First, my original Xbox One didn’t recognize the drive as being able to store apps and games. It was only showing up as a media drive. Had to spend some time online troubleshooting before I was able to find the simple fix - rebooting the Xbox. As soon as I did that the drive showed up as being capable of storing apps and games. I still had to reformat the drive using the Xbox but that went fine.
Now, the part you really should know about before making the decision to buy this or not - it’s a little confusing but I think I have it figured out. If your console is the old original Xbox One (like mine), then this drive is capable of not only storing apps and games, but also playing them directly off the drive. However, if you have one of the newer consoles (Series X and S I believe), then you won’t be able to play the games off the drive - you can store them there but you will need to transfer them to the internal drive on your Xbox to be able to play them. Since I don’t have to do that, I don’t know how quickly the transfer goes, but this is something to keep in mind.

Today im reviewing the Western Digital’s WD BLACK D30 1TB game drive SSD.
This particular SSD is an Xbox edition. Set up was simple just plug and play. No need to connect the SSD to a power source. Then just go to the Xbox menus, format and you’re all set.
Now from what I understand, the Xbox will not play the games directly off of this external SSD, You can download games to here but then need to transfer it to the actual Xbox’s memory to then be avle ro play that particular game… with that being said, the transfers are super fast.
This is a great option if you are running out of space i’m your console.

The WD Black 1 TB Game Drive is a great solution for anyone who wants to add more space to their Xbox Series X/S. It immediately recognizes it as soon as you plug it in and is seamless with integrating new games onto the added space. With the SSD the load times are just as strong as the internal drive and I couldn't be happier with the HD and the way its performing. Also came with a free month of Xbox Ultimate which is a nice touch. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs more space on their Xbox!

This is a great addition to my gaming setup. It was smaller than I thought it was, which is a good thing. You can easily take this on the go put it in your backpack, purse, anywhere really. I downloaded Red Dead Redemption Siege, and Warzone with an estimated time of about 25 mins, and it took less for both. This device has the fastest downloading time I’ve experienced. I’ve included some pics, it also fits nicely with my gaming setup and I don’t mind leading it sitting out.
