Good backup drive - but needs a fan

I do regular image backups of my workstation, that has four NVMe m.2 drives . For this I need large capacity, external, hard drives. This 20TB drive is well suited for the task. Its only shortcoming is that it heats up to more than 50deg C during the long backup time, if left to its own devices. I have fixed this issue by positioning a pair of 80mm fans beneath it, to force cool air into its housing (see photo). The drive also performs well for a hard drive, as can be seen in the results of a Crystal Disk Mark speed test. The temperature at the start of the test was 24 deg C. At the end of the test it was 33 deg C, and dropped to 25 deg C just 3 minutes after the end of the test. The fans are very effective. I use two separate external hard drives for my backups, alternating between each one. This is good enough for my needs. I recommend this drive to anyone needing a simple, cost effective way to do large backups.

Excellent drive, moderate heat, Optimal transfer rates for the first 40% of the drive, but does dive to 140 MB/s at the end of the 20TB platter. It's a bit noisy compared to Seagate and Western Digital drives but overall the price is excellent. Overall still an great purchase especially when closer to $300. I highly recommend this as a stand alone vault but keep in mind 20TB is quite a bit of data and buying one and backing it up to another is peace of mind unless you plan to use hardware or software raid to guarantee it.

I've used dozens of WD external hard drives over the years. This is the 2nd 20TB HD I picked up for backup redundancy. I've never had any fail on me.

Chances are this will be a big enough drive to get you by on whatever project you're working on. Lots of space, easy to set up and install. BUT --- the 20TB branding is a bit of a misnomer. I don't feel deceived by Best Buy, as they presented it as 2000 GB, which is mostly right... The label on the box, the listing on BestBuy.com is for 20TB. If you're particular about counting your bytes as 1000 vs 1024, the drive is big enough to where it's a noticeable difference. 20,000,586,850,304 bytes.... That's 18.1 TB 20TB on the box. 20TB on the website. 18.1TB when you plug it in. I'm going to get great use out of this drive, I've trusted Western Digital drives for over 30 years. I just feel like I bought a 10-pack of something and there was only 9 in it. Just wanted to make sure you know what you're getting (and aren't getting)

I am making a movie that once completed will exceed the 8Tb capacity of my iMac. So, I will need a safe place outside of the iMac to store large sections of the movie till they're all complete and then finish editing them together and save it on the easystore. I had some difficulty linking the WD easystore to my iMac till I was fortunate enough to speak with Natalia V at Western Digital whose advice rapidly solved the problem. So, beyond a very large, very capable appliance, I also got direct, succinct technical support. This was a very good experience for me. Gratitudes for your efforts.

Great product in an easy to use and compact design. Transfer speed is fast and the cables are interchangeable with other WD products. The data transfer cable is also a fairly standard format so it can be used with other external hard drive cables.

I would rate it a 5 but it doesn’t easily connect to a MacBook like the smaller versions do. I had to go through so many hoops and loops to get it to work on my MacBook. If you have a MacBook, you need to reformat it with a Windows computer first before it is compatible with a Mac.

In a world where information has grown to a leviathanic scale, the WD Easystore 20TB External Hard Drive emerges as a stoic sentinel—offering both sanctuary and solace to restless data. Encased in sleek obsidian black, its design is an ode to understated elegance. The unassuming exterior belies the Herculean strength it holds within: 20 terabytes—a cavernous expanse where libraries, archives, and entire creative legacies find refuge. The installation, a symphony of simplicity, is executed with nothing more than the tender embrace of a USB 3.0 connection. Like a river flowing effortlessly into the sea, the drive merges with my system—whisper-quiet yet steadfast. For the artist safeguarding high-resolution projects, the archivist preserving memories, or the cinephile hoarding cinematic masterpieces, this drive is an altar to permanence. It handles bulk transfers with the grace of a maestro. Files that once crawled across lesser drives now sprint with an urgency that borders on exhilaration. WD’s reliability is uncompromising; even the weight of 4K footage and labyrinthine project files hardly stirs it. Heat, the great saboteur of hard drives, is expertly mitigated, with the Easystore holding steady through extended sessions. I cannot help but marvel at the dichotomy this device embodies: a tangible artifact in an age of ephemeral clouds. It sits beside my desk, humble yet Herculean, quietly ensuring that my life’s work remains intact, immutable, and ready to be retrieved at a moment’s notice. Five stars. It is not merely a hard drive—it is a vault, a guardian, a cornerstone in the digital lives we live.

Ok, i needed a large capacity drive to back up the work i do. I was happy to see the 20TB drive for the price that was not blowing up my budget. But, when I got it and started to use it on my mac - it was not really working. Of course, it was not configured to work with mac but, but there is software on it that you can run and it allows storing files from mac. I wanted to format it for mac but, i also have windows. In order to backup files from both, i left the formatting as it is. With the software they let you run - it also works for mac. But, I have to tell you - I almost returned it. And the reason is - it is SOOOOOO LOUD!!!! I mean, it feels like a factory when it backs things up. It feels painful... i mean, i thought it was broken. I have no idea what it does but, trust me - the sound is just crazy... I let it run for a while and, figured, it was just the way it works.... But, I really do not like the sound and, was just battling between returning and getting other brands with 7200 rpm or something ... (this one is 5400 rpm). Anyway, I rate it 3 out of 5 simply because it does have a ton of room, but, for the mechanical architecture, speed and price - i do not think i would buy this again.

Its a good NAS for the price when on sale but I can see some of the corners cut. The power cord on the new revision is flimsy to the point that I worry about inflection damage if I ever have to move the unit. It also runs warm during heavy activity and there is no power button. While a NAS is intended to stay powered on all of the time there are occasions that I may want to safely power off. Planned power outages or wheather events etc.

I have 6 easy stores at this point. I like them better than elements (due to lack of power button). The price is always good. I usually wait until it’s about $14-15/TB. That’s best price you will find. The most recent purchase wound up being $13.10/tb when I factored in the $30 in rewards I guess I had accumulated. Great product though. Highly reccomend!
