If you do your research (as I did) into the various drives, you'll find WD's EasyStore is not only one of the best for long term storage of files (for me, primarily movies) but also perhaps the best bargain when you measure dollars per TB (here at Best Buy, of course). This is my third (2, 4, now 8TB) and the first is still flawless after six years of more or less constant/daily use.

I have an older Mac Pro Tower and every couple of years I change out my main internal drive, internal time machine backup drive, and an external backup drive. Long story short, I am glad that the hard drives got better, bigger, faster, for very reasonable prices. This drive is so worth it, so watch when Best Buy puts it on sale. As the name says easy store, ez set up and ez to use.

Brought 2 of these WD 8TD RED drives for the price of 1 to use to upgrade my Tivo BOLT+ and Roamio Pro. I went from 475HD hours to over 1200HD hours.

My desktop came with 256gb of SSD storage which clearly isn't enough to do anything. I put in a second 2tb to support the kids' games and other files but needed a bigger backup for my wife's photography business and the million family photos she takes. This was plug and play. I haven't had any issues with it. It is bulky but what do you expect from a 8tb external drive? It is easy to use and easy to move as needed. I have considered purchasing another to create a network drive.
Side note: Previous reviews talk about which HD is inside and I have NOT opened it to find out. It works well and I have no complaints. An internal drive might be cheaper but we have several computers to back up around the house and the mobility is nice.

Had enough storage to complete the task with so much more storage than what I thought I'd have. Download of PC information for backup went smoothly. Would recommend this product for backup duplication of files.

Purchased in May of 2023, it's now November 2023.
I needed a quick solution for mirror copies of data on a Synology NAS. Worked wonders! It has been performing well and provides me yet-another-backup with plenty of space to do mirror and incremental for my situation.
I only use it as a backup solution and not direct access unless I'm restoring something. I don't do any photo/video/music work off of it, nor would I ever.
Here's hoping it survives a full 2 years (that's my personal cycle for these things).

I own several of these, as well as several of the smaller models (4 gb and 5 gb). Smaller models do not need to be plugged into an AC outlet (they get enough power directly from your desktop or laptop). The larger models, such as this 8 gb external HD, need to be plugged into a wall outlet. That's not a drawback for me, but that fact, and the size and weight of the unit, makes them less portable than the smaller units (if you travel much). I've had one 8 gb unit for over year -- used it a lot, and it never let me down. Bought another when I spotted one on sale, and had some BB rewards to make use of. The 8 gb is quiet, offers USB 3.0 transfer speeds, and holds a tremendous amount of data. These units come up for sale every so often at Best Buy, so you usually can catch them at a good price. Recommended.

For nearly 2 decades, I've gone with nothing else than Western Digital drives. They've been reliable, fast, and well made. And this one is no different. The price was great, and for 8Tb, you don't have to worry about running out of storage space. Installation was incredibly easy....just plug into your electrical outlet and plug into an open USB port. Drive gets instantly recognized by the computer.
Loved this drive so much, that I bought 2 at this price. And I'm confident enough with these that my computer backup will be going on these.

Well it hasn't died within the first month or so and that usually means you will not have a problem with a HDD for quite some time. It has tons of storage for a great price which is what we all need for storage.
If you want deep storage, nothing will beat a HDD because they will not have "byte loss" like SSDs can when not used for extended periods of time.

8TB seems like much but in this day in age if you're a gamer you already know we are headed toward an all digital future. My 5TB broke and needed a replacement fast! It's on sale now at a great price and you know it's made by a trusted company. Looks perfect sitting beside my Xbox One S.

easy to setup, (plug and play) , very fast and is nearly silent to operate, 8 TB size is awesome, and price was very affordable. Looking forward to purchasing several more in the near future. I would highly recommend it to good friends, and even to some not-so-good family.

I was hesitant about the price whenever I was looking into upgrading my external drive. I was using a 4TB WD Green for quite sometime as my gaming library. Well, as the year or so went on, that library became increasingly larger and to the point that even 4TB weren't enough. I found this beauty, and, while hesitant at first, I saw all the reviews talking about how secure these devices typically are from failures. Now, normally I don't review without having some more time with devices, but already things have much improved since I switched that I had to say something about it. Data transfer is significantly faster. Games load quicker and Steam updates to the games seem to happen faster. Not to mention I now have plenty more space to continue expanding my digital library. I believe, when the time is right (and when money is not an issue) I'll purchase another one, just for safe measure.

I bought this prior to the Chia SSD/HDD explosion in May 2021. It's super simple to use, and provides sufficient space. It took me a little while to get use to the mechanical sounds of the hard drive again as I've been SSD exclusive for the past few years, but it's not annoying, just present.
It's too early to tell whether this drive will survive for five years, but here's to hoping!
If you need extra space this may be a viable option for you. The prices are getting crazy now (I purchased this for $138 back in April 2021). If you need space I would honestly hold off until the demand/supply stabilizes. Hopefully this doesn't turn into another GPU crisis.

WD hard drives have consistently been excellent products for me for years. I have one in my PS5, my laptop, and this makes my second external drive after purchasing a 4tb model in 2020. Five years later that one is still going strong, have never had issues with it crashing or losing my data - but it never hurts to have a back up. This unit is quiet too, and has yet to become noticeably warm in its running.

If you're looking for a large reliable external drive, this is it. I have a few of them already, but needed more storage. I definitely recommend it, especially when you're on a budget.

I know everyone is on the SSD train. But this was great value for the money. It was plug and play. I loaded all my movies, shows, and music on it. Using it as a media server watch movies on my computer. Right now it is connected to my TV as an added option for entertainment.
