If you're looking for a large reliable external drive, this is it. I have a few of them already, but needed more storage. I definitely recommend it, especially when you're on a budget.

Idles at 65c! Scorching hot, Loud, overpriced Junk

TL;DR These harddrives REQUIRE fan cooling, but have non. They Idle at 65c. They will Fail from overheating. They have Cheap Harddrives inside instead of REDS. ------------------------------- These harddrives had sky rocketed to $250 thanks to the bitcoin craze and finally dropped down to a normal price thanks to the bitcoin crash. I finally got my hands on one for $180. I've heard nothing but good news about these drives since they have Helium filled 5000rpm WD reds in them and are shuckable. Unfortunatly WD has gone into full cheap mode and has started using cheap white labeled 7200rpm drives that are non shuckable and filled with air instead of helium. So they get hot, very hot. I took my new HD home and plugged everything in and the problems started. You get 7.270TB of usable data instead of the full 8.000TB. This really sucks since i could have bought two 5tb drives for $200 and gotten 9.070TB worth of storage since each 5tb drive has 4.540TB worth of storage space. I started transfering my data to this new harddrive. Data transfers at 90mb/s to 200mb/s which is good. These harddrives are loud. They click, clank and make all sorts of weird noises when in idle mode. Also when they vibrate i can feel i pulse from my desk. There wasn't anything wrong with the drives its just they're cheapy harddrives and are just loud and vibrate/rumble like an xbox or sony controller. I checked google and this is normal for these harddrives as well as for their more expensive black drives. Hardrives should be kept cool. Its why they have a metal top. For heat dispersion. I pluggged in my new 8tb drive and it idled at 32c which is great since HD's should stay in the 40c to 50c range. Anything above 50c and harddrives should slow themselves down to avoid cooking themselves. It took about 15 minutes, but i saw that this drive slowly crawled its way up from 32c to 65c during transfers!! I stoppped transfering data to see if the temps would drop and they never did. I unplugged this HD and let it cool by a fan and plugged it back in. Slowly at idle with no transfer's going on this HD crawled back from 32c all the way to 62c. putting my hand above the vent you can feel the heat like a frying pan just cooking this harddrive. I stuck a mini fan on top, started transfering data and watched the temp of this drive go from 65c down to 38c. With the mini fan on top i could feel the heat coming out of this enclosure and it felt like one of those personal heaters you buy during the winters. It took about 5 minutes for the enclosure to get down to 38c and the heat coming out felt felt really cool. This is unacceptable since WD should include a fan inside of this enclosure. I've decided that this is a bad design and refuse to do the work of WD, so i returned this 8tb easystore the next day. I'm going to buy two 5tb portable hardrives for $200 as my brother has a couple and they idle at 40c and go to 50c during transfers which is way cooler than these overheating 8tb easystores. Also i'll have 2gb of extra space. I've always used WD since seagate creates faulty drives, but when a company makes a bad product you have to call them out on it. These large disk easy stores are complete junk and should be redesigned with a fan in the case. buy at your own risk.

Trust the name. Got this for a back-up for my back-up. Can't add too much to the specs and product description, easy to use, not ugly on the desk and good value.

    Excellent for Xbox One X

I recently upgraded to an Xbox One X and this hard drive is the perfect complement. It's basically plug and play, the Xbox formatted it in about a minute. I wish it didn't require an AC adapter, that's one less plug on the surge protector but at the end of the day you aren't getting an 8 TB external without one. Trust me, you're going to want 8 TB if you have a One X. Also I'll note in a perfectly quite room I can sometimes hear the hard drive because I have my Xbox set to update in the background (Instant On). In contrast I've never heard one of my WD Passports in the same environment. At the end of the day this is your best bet for an 8 TB external and Best Buy runs sales regularly on it. I would buy it again.

In WD, only 8TB drives are red. So inside this unit, it can only be a red NAS drive - high quality drive. At low 160 price tag, I bought two and placed it in NAS and run RAID 1 for more than a month - no issue.

I have used WB Easystore external HDs as backups for about 6 or 7 years now - and I've never had one fail yet. I also use the drives to work off from making video content, with hundreds of gigs of info going back and forth, with no problems whatsoever. A highly recommended workhorse of a drive.

Bought this for my PS5 and it's been working great! Keep in mind that the light will not come on unless it is plugged into the back. Don't fret if it doesn't start as soon as you plug in the power cord. The issue is the PS5 needing updates to fix the corrupt database issues with external hard drives. I haven't lost any data yet, but have left it unplugged for the time being. If you're thinking about getting it, go ahead if it's on sale. You won't regret it!

This works really well. I read something about shucking them, but I don't see how that's necessary, if they're in a cool a/c room. They do exactly, what they claim to do. It's great to save video games, that don't fit on the standard internal memory of your console. You can transfer them, in and out, as you please. Great addition to our family XBOX console.

    A Word To the Wise

I purchased four of these drives to replace some old Seagate models in a NAS. I'd done a fair amount of research, but nonetheless I wasn't expecting to get the models I ended up with. It seems WD has been using a new model: WD80EDAZ-11TA3A0 which is what I received in all four drives. This appears to be a white label WD Red but could also be a rebrand from their Hitachi acquisition, as these models are air-filled instead of utilizing helium as would be expected. The new DCM on these boxes is: NGBPWCP As for performance, the drives are running much better than anticipated and despite the warnings online I have yet to see temperatures anywhere above 45c.

This is my 3rd 8TB HDD. I have 0 complaints. Cheap, quiet and they help me increase my media collection. Best bargain around. I'm confident they will survive those temperatures within the warranty period (2 years), but it's been tested and proven that hard drives do not do so well in terms of longevity with temperatures in excess of 40c. If you do shuck them, they run very cool; and you don't even have to install them internally. Just popping off the outer casing, and running a small fan on top keeps temperatures within 32-36c.

    Excellent External Hard Drive

This drive is big (8TB) and fast. I'm getting 200+ MB/s transfer rates (verified by timing large file transfers as well as benchmark utilities like Crystal DriveMark). I'm extremely happy with the performance. Prior to getting this drive, I had tried a Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB, which was slow (often sub 100 MB/s) and inconsistent (maybe 130 MB/s one time, then 90 the next, then 150, then 70), which I returned and got the Western Digital Easystore instead. The Western Digital was $30 more expensive, but it's worth it because it performs so much better. I've seen some reviews saying that it is loud. I have not found that to be the case at all.

Ease of use, very easy to set-up, just plug and play, no difficulty getting is linked to the computer. File transfer is fast using 3.0. Does not get hot when plugged in for extended periods. Very good quality. Works smoothly on Apple OS. Store associate that recommended this storage external drive did excellent job. Value of purchase is great, was able to price match and beat Amazon's price.

Great drive to shuck and use as internal storage

Great deal given the capacity. The price per GB is unmatched in the current desktop hard drive market. After shucking the drive out of its enclosure, I found that it is a Western Digital WD80EDAZ (mostly rebranded western digital Red). It's a reliable drive, but is obviously slow given it is 5400rpm, and it does get hot under continuous throughput. If you plan on doing what I am doing, which is using it as an internal storage in a desktop, make sure to have a fan blowing intake air somewhere close by, otherwise it could overheat.

This is a nice compact 8TB drive with USB 3 speed. I've been using this particular drive with rsync on a linux box to backup part of my NAS system. No weird sleep modes, no timeouts, no failure to spin up after power save kicks in, all in all a good deal for this amount of storage. This is my 3rd 8TB unit, along with a number of the same make 2, 3, and 4TB external drives. They have been reliable and work well with both Windows and Linux machines using SMB for multiplatform shares. Handy hint: Use grsync front end for rsync on linux boxes and the weird quirky parameter issues for mixing SMB and USB shares just go away.
