I have 3 of these, one of which just died tonight after about 5 years of faithful service. It hasn't had a very easy life. At least a dozen TSA X-rays, 4 transatlantic trips, banged around when my desk collapsed, and frequent uploads of copied media files. I'm going to replace it first thing tomorrow.

Why does WD even bother to preformat? Had to reformat the drive to cleanup drive errors. Wouldn't have purchased at $119.

This drive works good. I love the software that come with it. You can backup automatically, set a sleep time if not use for a period of time and setup your drive with security. Performs good. I formatted it into 2 equally spaced drives to keep graphic on one and backup to to the other.

I had the my book 2TB and i loved it so much but i broke it. So i had to replace it with another one and i obviously pick the same brand and model because i tried WD My Passport Ultra and it wasn't for me since i use external hard drives for gaming so the passport was so slow. Anyways i love WD My book!

The hard drive works great as it should. I wish we could buy one less than 3 TB but I guess that is just where technology is these days.

Western Digital is the go-to brand for external (and internal) hard drives. I will not purchase another brand.

    My Book hard disk failed

About a year ago I bought and installed a 3 TB My Book external hard drive. It seemed to work fine, but a couple weeks ago I got a message indicating it was corrupted. I tried running the Repair Disk feature of my MacBook Pro's Disk Utility, but it was not able to repair the disk. It's disappointing. The replacement won't be a My Book.

Bad hdd model. failed 3 times.

PRO Cheap and large storage. CONS: Computer failed to detect and partition lost for the 3rd times. First time I lost about 180gb. Regular data recovery softwares does not work on this thing. 2nd time I lost about 1.8tb on my windows 8 OS on the machine I built. I swap my old vista OS back to that same machine with everything intact. Vista found it. I went back to bestbuy few hours ago to get another 2tb passport because they are more reliable. I have 7 of them. Before I went to bestbuy it still works. However now it stopped working again so that makes it failed the 3rd times. I am reverting my vista back to Nov 2013 just like when I popped this hdd back to Vista since yesterday. I am hoping it will work. If it does I will save my data right away. Something is seriously wrong with this hdd manufacturing process.

Slows down my computer and Confusing Software

When ever I plug this in to my laptop, it slows down my computer. The software to find out if it is actually backing things up is very confusing. Except for a yellow bar and a spinning blue white line, I can't tell if it is backing up or not. The thing constantly blinks at me and I can't tell what the heck is going on. I''ve been using computers and teaching for over 40 years and this software is for the experience programmer. Not a lay person.

I have two of these drives. One of them is a little over one year old. The other is about 7 months old. The 1 which is older just quit working. And the newer one has been screwing up. It keeps turning itself on and off. I had to unplug it because it is really annoying. I am working on trying to find someone who can retrieve my data from the one that died. I have contacted WD, and am waiting to hear back from them. I will update as this thing progresses. In the meantime, if you are looking for a reliable storage device, keep looking. This is not the drive you want. Total junk! I am extremely disappointed and angry.

I must have gotten the only two drives that do not work. Neither drive would install on a W-7 Pro system with USB 3 ports nor would it install on a W-7 Home Premium system with a PCI USB 3 card. They will be returned for similar drives offered by anyone but WD.
