Customers admire the My Cloud EX2 Ultra 16TB for its storage capacity, describing it as having "a good amount of storage." They also appreciate the easy setup process, with comments like "easy setup and setting up accounts and copying files." The RAID feature is another advantage, as one customer mentioned, "I set up a RAID 1." However, the documentation could be improved, as some customers have expressed frustration with it.

Good Network Attached Storage Device, Bad Document

The My Cloud EX2 Ultra 16TB2-Bay RAID unit comes up as advertised. But then what?
I will give this Network Attached Storage a 4 star rating, but the point of buying this device is to be used in one or more different ways.
2 stars for the documentation!
Unfortunately, the documentation of the unit and purpose driven documentation is unacceptable.

My old NAS drive (2TB) was running out of room and I decided to go big (or go home ;-) The WD EX2 Ultra came pre-configured as RAID-1. This means extra protection for sensitive files, but only 8TB of usable space. It also supports disk spanning and RAID-0. However, the disk interface also lets you reformat as JBOD ("Just a Bunch Of Disks") that allows access to all 16TB. Using JBOD each drive becomes a separate partitions.
Allowing remote access is a bit tricky since the disk is "self-certifying". In most browsers (I have tried IE, Chrome, and Firefox), attempts to connect for the first time are met with dire warnings about the validity of the certificate. Opting around the warnings finally gave me (and 3 family members) remote access. WD support assured me that there were no security issues either for the drive or the users.

Not a Consumer Device

I'm not sure who would be thinking of buying this drive. It is neither a amateur consumer or enterprise device. IP addresses are not the usual topic of conversation at the dinner table with the parents and you had better know about them or you will be stressing out while working with this drive. On the enterprise side, this is not a robust enough drive that I would actually set up in a company. Otherwise the device works as expected and is easy to work with provided you are technical so I'll give it an 'average' rating.

It is better, faster, and more convenient than internet only clouds. I've used Western Digital products for years and am satisfied with the reliability of their products.

If you need an external hard drive that you can connect to your network, this is it! Easy to setup and use. I'd definitely buy another one.

Relatively easy to install. Documentation could be less complex and needs to be sectioned by type of set-up your doing.
Reads like a giant Boolean logic statement

Purchased this NAS as a way to store all my files easier.
Pros
1. Easy to setup, basically holds your hand while doing it.
2. Configurable.
3. The App is great.
Cons
1. When it is working you will hear it. It gets really loud.
Have it nestled in an open area ensuring there is enough adequate flow, and nothing would stop the fans from working.

The unit I picked up did not work. The built-in NIC did not grab an IP address from my router even though lights were flashing. USB connectivity works fine but I needed it to be on the network so I returned it.
