    Extra Storage for PS4

I have the original PS4 with only 500GB of storage space. The PS4 Pro (and the newer PS4 regular) comes with 1TB. I was constantly running out of space on my console, unable to install new games, download updates, etc. and I was hesitant to upgrade to a $400 Pro just for more storage space. I also did not want to risk installing a new HD on my own. With the new PS4 update, it allows you to use an external hard drive as additional storage space. (Note that you do not need the My Passport that specifically says it's for "PS4" in the title. The standard USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive will do.) I plugged it in and followed the simple instructions for my PS4 to format it, and voila, 4TB of additional storage -- thank god! I immediately downloaded all the games that were sitting in the queue, and also transferred all of my existing games to the external drive. I went from barely a GB of free space on my PS4 to about 300 free GB, which I can now use to save gameplay footage, screenshots, etc. without getting an error that there's not enough space. Works like a charm and I've had zero issues with it.

Very easy to use! Just plug in to your computer's USB Port; it's a self-starter. Your computer recognizes its presence immediately. Please read the Readme.txt and User Manual PDF files on the drive which can be found by clicking on the drive's icon in File Explorer if you're using Windows. You will need to run WD Discovery.exe to get additional WD software and help configure your WD Passport drive to fit your needs/preferences. There are instructions for Mac users in said text file. ABOVE ALL ELSE: DO NOT CONNECT YOUR DRIVE TO A POWERED USB HUB! Your computer cannot power off the hub and, consequently, your Passport drive. If you attempt to disconnect your drive from the hub by disconnecting the drive's USB cable, you run the risk of pulling it just when the drive's light starts flashing again. This can happen even if you use Windows "Safely Remove..." app/feature or if you remove power from the hub by disconnecting its power cord.. It could possibly corrupt the data on your drive and cause your computer to not recognize your WD Passport the next time you start your computer and the drive is connected. This happened to me a couple of days after I had installed my drive, and it gave me quite a scare! Fortunately, I was able to get my computer to recognize the drive and no data was lost. Because of my experience with almost losing my data on the drive, and the possibility that the drive could have been damaged, I heartily recommend to all that you read your device's supporting documentation before installing the unit. Follow those guidelines and your toy will serve you well for a long tiime! Yes, I know: Physician, heal thyself...

    Great solution for digital storage.

I've always trusted Western Digital for my Hard Drive needs. Whether it's an internal drive for a computer or an external HDD. This line of My Passport models are a great solution for digital storage needs. Light and compact, they take up very little space on a desk or traveling in a laptop bag. They can hold as much data as the MY Book models but in a more convenient package for portability and without the need of an additional electrical adapter, as they are powered solely from the USB connector that is simultaneously used for data. They work well as either an occasionally connected external to use for long term storage, or a committed drive that is constantly connected to a main device for backups and often used data, . An overlooked but very useful feature is the variety of fun colors. They don't just make the product look good, they also help in organizing your data with a color coding system. With one quick glance you know by color which drives hold what kind of data, Blue for family photos perhaps, red for legal documents, white for work related data, etc. The series also offers different storage thresholds in various TB amounts for whether you want to store a little, or a lot of data. Price per Passport is also very reasonable in comparison to similar drives from competitors. Particularly when coupled with Western Digital's attention to detail and impressive track record for making dependable, quality products.

Significant issues trying to work with MacOS

I purchased this hard drive because I had heard so many good things about it - it apparently performs well in terms of reliability, longevity and price. This may all be true and I might update my review in the future, but out of the box I had significant issues trying to get it to work with my computer. For reference I'm running a MacBook Air on macOS Sierra. On plugging it in, the drive was immediately recognized but needed to be reformatted for use, which was fine by me. However, I have both Mac and Windows computers, so I wanted to format it to a FAT32 system to be used by both. Immediately after doing this, the drive became (1) impossible to normally dismount from my computer without Force Ejecting, (2) eventually could not be written to, and (3) stopped being recognized by Disk Utility. This was within 2 weeks of purchase! After a few hard resets and an unplug-replug, I was able to recognize it with Disk Utility and reformat it into MacOS-Journaled, but of course this comes at the expense of loss of compatibility with Windows computers. It has since worked fairly well and I have no issues with it, but I need to mention the significant growing pains involved, not to mention the sheer panic I felt when it was suddenly...unrecognizable...by my computer. I'll keep using it but I have significant concern about suddenly (and permanently) losing access to all my important files. This is definitely not the Western Digital I'm used to.

New life for PLEX server now fed by the Passport

Had an old home server as NAS doing nightly backups and serving media files to PLEX server on main computer (more horsepower than old server). Well, the old server was starting to act 'iffy' at times. Instead of losing quite a few movies and TV shows stored on the old server, got this 4GB portable to save the files before the old server blew a gasket. Files transferred nicely and at a good speed using GoodSync to make the process go unattended. Now the portable is connected to main computer to feed the PLEX server. All the years of collected media files are safe and sound. Will re-build server with better operating system and put it back into service on down the road. Meantime this nicely priced large capacity portable drive has taken the 'iffy-ness' out of being able to view my media library without having to reboot the server to get it percolating again. Shout out to Best Buy for the "price match" philosophy... I have gone to Best Buy three times in the past week to pick up something that was definitely less online, but since BB will match the price I don't have to wait for delivery from the "Big A" on those "gotta have it now" items.

I purchased this on Best Buy during a promotion that came with a $25 gift card. I needed an external for my PS4 because we all know 500GB is just not enough space for these next gen systems & games. With a deal like that on a 4TB external I couldn't pass this deal up. This external will work with PS4 but there is 1 annoying little catch. And that is your PS4 does not recognize this external straight out of the box. You will need to format this by other means like hooking it up on your PC or laptop. Once you do that it will work fine with PS4 no problems. I won't deduct a star for that but I wanted to make note of it for any potental buyers. If you feel like that is a inconvience I'd suggest purchasing a Seagate external. My friend has one and it automaticly worked with his PS4 without needing to use a PC to format it. I hope this information helps. Also have to mention the color options for these are nice! I went with white to match my Harley Quinn PS4. ☺ Happy gaming!!!

Simple drive setup for a backup drive

I handle IT and prepress for a small printing company and use technologies like Apple's Time Machine whenever possible to support versioning and simple file recovery. Our preflight station which checks files and does basic preparation for the prepress department also sends out PDF proofs and mirrors most of the company's email accounts to enhance responsiveness. This afternoon, the computer started complaining about the USB time machine drive getting full. The OS does purge older backups, which is usually acceptable but I tend to prefer to retire and archive the drive at that point, allowing for a decent chance at recovering older files if necessary. So the task was simple. Hit the local Best Buy, bought one of these four TB drives, spent a couple of minutes reformatting it for Mac (GUID/HFS+ journaled), hooked it up to the Mac, waited a few seconds for the Mac to ask if I wanted to use the new drive, it began its initial backup, and Bob's your uncle, it's done. Total console time, approximately 10 minutes. It's purring away and I know a simple layer of file protection never was in doubt.

Great Hard Drive for Xbox One

I keep a lot of my physical games, even if I'm not playing them for long periods of time. So the storage space on my Xbox One fills up rather quickly; and it also doesn't help that a lot of games require huge amounts of storage (20gb and up). This hard drive is sold by a very reputable brand, so they are extremely trustworthy, and the build/quality of their drives is outstanding. The drive is connected to my Xbox, and it is far from where I play; so I can't comment on whether it makes any sort of noise or anything like that. But the storage options are great (I opted for 4tb) and the prices are competitive. Note to people who aren't aware: Even though the drive is advertised for a certain amount of storage space (in my case, 4tb), it's always going to be slightly less once you plug it in and check the specs. So keep that in mind when deciding how much space you'll need and how much bang you'll get for your buck.

I learned the hard way... What's the old saying? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I tried a Seagate 4tb external because it was cheaper in price, but returned it a few hours later after experiencing major issues with compatibility to my macbook pro. Got this one instead, and have been very happy with the speed and reliability so far. You just can't beat Western Digital! It could have been a fluke that my Seagate drive was defective, but I have been buying WD for years, and have never had any problems like this. To experience problems my first time getting something different than a WD is just not acceptable. I will only buy WD from here on out when it comes to my external hd needs.

This model works well with older windows 7 and new windows 10 computers. I personally don't like the look but that's just aesthetics and the price was right - cheaper than BestBuy exclusive WD model "easystore" with same specs but lesser security. No logic to me why Best Buys "Easy Store" model with same specs is MORE money especially since most references say the easy store model actually has less security features and maybe was supposed to be the less expensive model. In any case this one does what it's supposed to do. I use other backup software though because I dont like that wd software does not have "regular" explorer browsing of files. Cobian is still a decent freebie or I use Windows backup if I don't want/ need non-proprietary file access. Its also quite fine to use simply as external storage with or without automated back-up.

    Great Storage...Slow Seek Speed

I had a desktop 3 TB drive with my iTunes and iMovie libraries on it and I was filling it up, so I thought, why not migrate to a portable drive? That way I'd never have to worry about the power cord and I could easily take the drive around with me to home or school. Well there's a trade off...you get the larger drive space with a portable, but I lost quite a bit of the seeking speed. It's nothing too bad, just a little spinning-wheel-of-death lag of 5 seconds when choosing a new song on iTunes or when dragging a clip in iMovie. Annoying, but usable. Stick with a desktop if you are a professional user, this is just for casual users with large databases.

I purchased this drive, because it was a great price for such an insane amount of storage. I wanted to use this as a working drive for video projects. The problem is that every single time I plug this drive into a computer Windows tells me there's a problem with the drive and it requires repair. This happens every time I plug it into any computer. My Mac won't even recognize the drive until I plug it into a PC to repair the drive. Really disappointed. I have logged a ticket with WD, but who knows when or if they will get back to me. I would stay away from this drive if you value your time.

I purchased this to store and work with all my photos over the years - 37000+ and counting. Most of these are in the RAW format so over 30 meg each. I copied them from various sources to this drive and organized them under folders. I work with a combination of Nikon Capture NX2, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements for editing. I was debating getting an SSD drive as my hard drive is an SSD but small for all these pictures. With the USB3 connection to my computer, I am very pleased with the speed at which I can edit these pictures. So far this drive has worked flawlessly and seamlessly. I have also backed up my C Drive and continue to do so automatically a few times a week. So far I have only used approximately 4% of the hard drive. For the price and speed, and speed it is an excellent value.

I purchased the My Passport unit to replace an older, very slow unit so I didn’t expect getting started with this new one would be a big deal. Wrong! The user interface and documentation are subpar so it took much longer than expected and required serious searching for answers. There’s lots of information on the internet but it’s not well organized making it difficult to find an answer. However, once I got it set up and have been doing scheduled backups for about a month, I am quite happy with it. The backups occur as scheduled and it’s very fast. I’m using it to backup files on a laptop so I connect/disconnect it frequently. The small size makes this an easy task and I purchased a nice storage case to keep it safe. For the price, I’m very happy with my purchase.

Bought this with hopes to free up my 1 terabyte on my console. This thing works perfect. I literally have about 15 games, first I transferred what was on my local hard drive to the external, then I installed all my other games that I could never store on my local due to not enough space. Took me about an entire day. Also I do not have internet atm, my guess is if I did the updates would have taken much longer due to more items to download and install. Im really glad I bought this 3.0 usb it was super fast and I highly recommend for anyone looking for external hard drive for a console. I set it on top of my Xbox with a strip of double sided tape to secure it down to the console so it won’t move and it turned out perfect. 5 STARS. NOTE:Been about a month and a half since I’ve owned it, if any problems occur in the future I will be back with a review update.

I bought this to back up my files after hearing the horror stories about Win 10 update issues. FIrsty off they want you to sign up for the cloud, but you only get 500G for a year then they charge you. Had problems getting it to back up the files on my PC. Seems if it couldn't get to a file it stopped working. It wanted access to my Win cloud, which I don't use, so I let it in. It seemed to do better as afr as the back up went, although it didn't back up a bunch of files, as I couldn't tell by looking at the name what they were, I hope it worked for the files I wanted. Another interesting bug. Even though I told it the same files to back up, every time I redid it the number would climb started at 18G then 30G then 53G, I have no clue what it's looking at.

Was re-building a media server and needed LOTS of storage to transfer valuable files. This 4TIB drive was just the solution to the problem, and the USB3 transfer speeds really helped move things along. The media server re-build is done, and now I have a very portable high capacity drive that should meet just about any need in the future. For example, right now copying all my cloud drive files (lots of that) to copy to a new computer build to save the time and bandwidth needed to synchronize a mega-big cloud storage system. No telling what will be helped along by this very nice portable drive on down the road. Setup was effortless, although I can do without the bonus cloud storage and backup software included on the drive... already have that covered, but might be handy for some.

When my old Seagate external hard drive recently bit the dust, I was reluctant to start all over with a new drive. I recalled the trouble I had with set-up and dreaded what I'd have to go through to replicate my old routine. However, I could not ignore the benefits I'd be giving up, such as file protection and an amazingly larger and faster drive than before, so I put my head down and walked through the process. Wow, it was a breeze! I was up and running in no time and discovered some nifty software that came with my Passport. Also, the drive takes up much less space, is portable, and does not require yet another power cord. So far my passport has performed flawlessly and I am a very happy camper. It is a great replacement!

Transfer rate is good once you get past the very beginning of the disk. Latency seems high as my one software program that constantly does a very large number of writes to disk doesn't work with it because it can't keep up. I think it's due to the use of USB3 instead of eSATA but USB3 most PCs have and probably higher Max transfer rate while eSATA less common. This software should probably be used with an internal drive with a different connector type. Would be nice if the company wrote the included software to work for Linux. My review might be a little harsh 4/5 since the drive does what it claims from what I can tell. However, I'll use the slower drive speed at the beginning of the disk as an excuse. Would be nice to review this drive in a year as reliability is my main concern.

I bought this item to back up a 4TB raid array I have. I bought a 4TB passport a year ago to hold full computer backups of all computers in the house. Why buy this to back up redundant disks? I back up to these 2 Passports each week, then disconnect them and place them in my Go bag. In case of fire, I grab the bag and go. I've got everything ready to restore to new equipment if needed. The Passport is very simple, is added to Windows as a mapped drive and any back up program can copy files as can drag and drop. Works like a charm and data tests good each quarter thus far - no bad backups. Just what I need them for. Highly recommended.
