Doesn't work with Apple Time Machine if Encrypting

Just wanted to note that the 3TB (and possibly other capacities) "My Passport Ultra" drives DO NOT work with Apple's Time Machine feature IF encryption is selected. I tried two of these drives and both failed the same way when Time Machine was attempting to initialize encryption. It gets about 90% of the way into initializing encryption, then fails every time. I tried the same process with a 2TB Seagate Slim drive and it worked fine. The "Ultra" drives DO WORK with Time Machine IF encryption is NOT enabled. Both of the "Ultra" drives I tried were 3TB. Both drives were formatted with Apple Disk Utility to "OS X Extended (Journaled)" and a GUID Partition Map per Apple's guidelines. Could be that all capacities of these drives will have the same problem. Or it could be that Time Machine software has an issue with encrypting drives over 2TB. Could also be that these might encrypt if connected via USB 3.0, although the 2TB Seagate is encrypting on the USB 2.0 connection. The error messages I received during the encryption initialization process were "There was an error preparing the Time Machine disk. Couldn't mount disk." and then "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". Platform: I am running Mac OS X v10.11.3 (El Capitan) on an Early 2009 24" iMac. The "Ultra" drives were connected to a USB 2.0 port on the iMac using the USB 3.0/2.0 cable supplied with the drives.

My first ever SSD drive, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Small enough to fit in a pocket and an enormous amount of storage. I write and illustrate for a living, and saving all of those documents and drawings takes a lot of room. I haven't filled it yet, not even close. A word of caution if you haven't owned an SSD drive before: don't manually defrag it on a regular basis. Defrag creates unnecessary write/rewrite cycles. While spindle technology doesn't care, the solid state storage units have a limit. That doesn't mean you should never defrag an SSD; Windows will do it for you if you have Volume Shadow Copy turned on. But you don't need to defrag with anywhere near the frequency of a spindle drive because there are no "spin / seek" delays in an SSD. However, fragmentation can be a problem if you NEVER defrag. There is an upper limit to the number of file fragments the device can track, so the occasional defrag is good. A rule of thumb: if you're not doing volume shadow copies, defrag once a quarter on a schedule so you remember to do it but not do it too often. Better: leave Windows to manage the defrag and the drive will be defragged once a month.

WD Released these updated versions of the Ultra's 500GB, 1TB , 2TB, and a new 3TB. (For the 2TB The old version was Model # WDBMWV0020BBK-NESN and new version is Model # WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN) I researched if there are any differences, so here is what I came up with... I bought this to replace a 1TB Book. I saw from the reviews that it had 3x the space and also USB3, but with compatibility to USB2. I needed both the extra space and the compatibility, and this drive gives both for a great price. So far, the drive has worked flawlessly, with zero problems under Windows 10. I give the drive itself two thumbs up. The software is also good, but not great. I use the drive for local backup, so I was hoping the backup software would help out with backing up changed files. It does that, but unfortunately it does not mirror renames or deletes; that is, if I have changed file names or deleted files from my main computer, the backup software does not accommodate for that but instead backs up the changed files as though new and retains the deleted files on the drive. So, I have gone back to doing manual backups without the WD software, so I can mirror my files precisely.

I had a My Passport backup drive that was VERY simple to use and I loved. I plugged it in the USB drive, a box came up asking me if I wanted to run the backup, I said yes, there was a status bar and I knew it was working. Even an idiot could use it. So, I replaced it with this model. Now, the newer model is more complex. It refused to load on my computer. I needed a professional to install it and then the backup software was not simple as it was before. They want to you set up a schedule. There is no option to just back up the machine right now. I finally told them to rip it off my machine and I just use it as an external drive and it is just fine for that. But as a one touch backup drive it was useless. I hated the Seagate one touch back up drive but it did install the minute I plugged it in, unlike this one.

WD External Supperior to Seagate & Toshiba

I have owned external hard Drives from Toshiba, Seagate and Western Digital. In the first two cases, the connector at the external drive was flimsy and in short order became intermittent. I had to put the Toshiba and Seagate external HD's into special positions so that there was absolutely the right sort of force at the hard drive connectors to maintain USB connectivity. The Connector on the WD device is much firmer and more reliable. I have been using this external HD for about three months with no problems, whereas, by this time, the Toshiba and Seagate were already becoming unreliable.

I have purchased a number of portable external drives. This one is not the smallest physically, but, so far, it has been the most reliable. The 3 TB capacity provides lots of room for files and backups; it rivals the desktop portable drives that are larger and require a power adapter. Most of the smaller portable drives are limited to 1 TB and slow. The Western Digital is quick and quiet. Unfortunately, like most USB 3.0 drives the USB 3.0 cable is woefully short. The cable that came with this drive is approximately 14 inches long, but I would prefer a cable of at least 20 inches. I have purchased drives with cables only 3 inches in length! Please pay attention and provide longer cables external drive manufacturers!

I exchanged a WD 5TB HDD for this (due to the 5TB needing a separate adapter to power and the light shining from it at night). It works perfectly with my xbox one. No needing a power supply for it since it runs off the console's power. My only issue is that the power light for it flashes at night when the console is off (which is a major annoyance when trying to sleep. I placed a small piece of electrical tape offer the HDD's power light, and that took care of it. The odd thing is that I own a Toshiba 750GB portable external HDD , and when the XB1 is off, the Toshiba HDD is completely powered down. The power light is the only reason I don't give the WD 3TB drive 5 stars.

I always purchase WD drives. I've experienced them over the years to be the most reliable hard drives. Great Warranty as well. I found this drive is the largest storage size with being portable & not using a USB splitter which takes two inputs (Seagate 4TB External Portable). This WD drive uses a single input for power & data transfer. So far so good and if experience is exact then I should continue to use error free for quite some time. On the expensive side but it is a new item. I used reward certificates & Best Buy Price Match to bring it down to a more reasonable price. In my opinion it's a buy.

I needed an upgrade for my failing Seagate external drive. I needed something more reliable than what I already had. I am not disappointed with the decision to pick up this external drive. It feels solid and well made. Cable is nice and thick, though it's not very long so if you need to have it further away from your usb port, you'll need a longer cable or an extension. This wasn't a problem for me. I didn't use the tools that came with the drive. I wiped it clean and started transferring content over. I use this for my photography for stuff I'm actively working on. It performs well. Works well enough that I bought one for the wife.

This is my 9th WD external HD, in the past 10 years (2X100GB, 1X250GB, 1X320GB, 1X500GB, 2X1TB and 1X2TB). Unfortunately, the performance is undependable. One 100GB, 2X1TB and 1X2TB) worked for about 1 year, each, then, simply wouldn't mount either my desktop or my various pc's, causing a loss of large numbers of files and data. My latest purchase of 3TB is the worst, as I attempted an initial download of the necessary files/drives, only to have the Security feature fail to load, despite several repeated attempts, including my recourse to WD's support website's purported "fix" tool. A waste of money and time - - fortunately, there were no files/data on the drive.

WD brand "Passports" are the key to safe storage of all I hold valuable in the cyber world. This was my 4th purchase. [Photography is my world.] This time Best Buy gave me super value, 3T of storage for bargain pricing. I travel a lot. The WD Passport is lightweight and allows me to store photos, videos and my presentations. Should a computer go down. I get a new one locally, plug in the Passport and all I need for business is at my fingertips. The fact this external hard drive goes easily for both PC and MAC adds even more value. Thank you Best Buy for offering quality merchandise consistently!

Used for years the WD desktop external hard drives (My Book) to save back-up data from my computer. Eventually the electricity part broke and I lost data or could not recover it. That made me look into the Passport series. Simple USB hook-up, no electricity needed (one less thing to worry breaking down). I chose this 3TB version, as I convert all of my CD collection to MP3's and in best sound quality it would take up too many GB's on my desktop computer. Plus it is mobile all over the world, if I decide to take with me. Highly recommend this dependable device to anyone for important storage and/or back-up storage.

This is a great choice for storing your data. It is portable, & you only need to plug it in your PC USB & you're done. There is no other cable you need to plug on current. It is very compact, small & portable. I use WD because my first Ext HD was another brand & got damaged, & I looked up on SONY Webpage, & they sold WD: Western Digital HD: Hard Disks. This is my 3rd WD Ext. HD since 2010, & all are performing well yet. All WD Ext. HD's includes free software to manage your backup & help you to use your WD hardware. I sincerely recommend Best Buy & WD: Western Digital Hard Disks

My PC crashed after changing to Windows 10 (after the 30 time grace period was over. But that's another story). I needed a new hard drive and the Geek Squad needed something to back up my files. The first product I could think of, that I knew I could depend on (based on other products I have purchased in the past), was WD. I purchased it from Amazon and with Prime account, I received it in 2 days. The Geek Squad used it for the transfer, and once I got my PC working again (after replacing the hard drive , which was also a WD product, I backed up my files with it. I, haven't used it since.

I originally bought this external hard drive for my son's Xbox One for extra storage. He hasn't had to use it yet, but I have. My computer wouldn't reboot right AFTER Windows 10 AUTOMATIC UPDATE that we are forced to accept, and I had to take my computer into Geek Squad on the 1ST of this month for them to fix the problem. I WAS SO GRATEFUL that I purchased the WD 3TB, because I had to have my computer backed up and reset, because of Windows 10's messing up people's computers, as this had happened to quite of few of the teaching staff, this WD External Hard Drive REALLY came in handy.

I bought this external hard drive for my video editing. Before I bought this drive I had read all the reviews and to be honest I was a little afraid. People were saying it stop working after a month or I lost all my data after 2 weeks. Besides those reviews, I had to go with what I know is a good product. I have owned and worked with Western Digital products for a really long time and I hardly ever have an issue with their products. So i bought this drive. This external hard drive has worked great for me. I have had NO issues with it. It works every time without loosing my data.

I recently purchased a laptop with a small Solid State Drive that's not big enough to hold all my work and photos. I had another brand of external backup drive that I quickly came to detest. This WD drive, however, was just what I needed. It's small and fast and at 3TB it will be a long time before I'm able to fill it up. I'm finding I'm now backing up my work data much more frequently and am using this drive and the cloud to back up my photos. I've no regrets making this purchase whatsoever. Plus, it's so nice having a device in my home office that's not black! I love the blue color.

This hard drive was just what I needed to take traveling in my RV. The speed is very good and it was easy to install. I am a bit paranoid about the storage of my photos on the "Cloud" (which is very touchy when one tries to retrieve them, if you can remember your exact password and don't change the version of the operating system in the mean time) so external hard drives are my storage of choice. I guess that I am a "belt & suspenders" kind of person when it comes to back up. The sales staff helped me get the best price possible when I made the purchase, which also was a convincing factor.

This fairly flat 3 terabyte drive is simple, convenient and reliable to use. Pluses I found were that this drive is: *Flat and easy to fit in a computer bag, weighing 8oz *Powered by only a USB 3.0 cable *Nice array of hard disk management software included *Password protection & 256-bit AES hardware encryption *3-year limited warranty Minus: *USB plug is located on the side which also has a small light which indicates drive activity (the USB cable not being as flexible as I like can cover the activity light making it hard to see)
